Brighton fans seem to think the Dale Stephens to Burnley transfer is happening.
Well, he's turned us down at least once previously. Not sure he'd be exactly motivated.

Sure we can do better.

Makes sense this signing at the moment. Josh Brownhill could play on the right with Stephens in the centre.

Would make more sense to sign a right sided player instead of shifting players around to 'fill-in'. Brownhill wasn't signed to play on the right wing.

Hence why I said at the moment. If it’s a cheap deal then it makes sense and Stephens is a good player.

We currently have six of our normal first team squad out injured. Barnes, Mee, Cork, Tarky?, Gudders and Brady. Are you seriously suggesting that we bring in 500k - £1 million signings just to cover whilst the Injured players become fit again? Because I'll tell you one thing, players of that standard would never play again once the main players are fit. All they would do is collect a big wage every week. Not exactly sensible financial planning.

Far better, IMHO to wait to see what happens in the window. If Tarky, or A N Other leaves, then we can probably bring in two or three very decent players instead and with a fully fit squad we might soon look like a very good team again.

Let's wait until the window closes before we get too despondent eh?
I don't think you can wait for 6 casualties to get fit with such a small squad. One reason for Bmouth's demise was their long list of injuries despite a biggish squad. Our numbers if all fit is presently only 20 with three keepers who would have to be named in the 25, McNeill is still under 21 so is a freebie as is Benson and the entire under 23 squad; if being under 21 on Jan 1st 2020 is what counts to play but not be named in the 25

Did he not put in a transfer request to try and force through a move to us?

Anyway, I think that we could do better and probably will.

Just driven past the turf and they are taking down the away fanzone gazebo so that’ll hopefully save a few quid on hiring it. Might get someone in with that money

Some rumours on their board it’s for £750k. In terms of adding numbers that probably makes sense. Very worrying if it is intended to play regularly in the first team.

He could be made to look very silly at Wet Spam. He won't have defenders like he has here to help out. That won't do his England prospects any good.

Still a no for me! 27.5% sell on clause makes it very little in terms of cash available to replace. Plus he deserves better.

But the sell on clause means even if he left for 50 we'd only get 7m more. Bottom line here is that 40m is probably as close as we will get to the 50 I think that will tip it if a) its true and b) he's up for the move (which i assume he is otherwise why are West Ham still coming back?)

Stephens in for under £1m. Brownhill to the right. Saves money on signing a right winger. Proper business.

West Ham are a relegation rival. We would be mad to sell JT to them. Still we might get an extra £5m if we went down instead of them. 😃

If signed for under 1m, sell on value is irrelevant. Iam sure we could do better, but needs must in these uncertain times, plus he's a player dyche likes.

if getting Stephens in for 750K, who should play as the low block free's up Brownhill to be more attacking then I'm ok with it, if it free's up more cash to actually buy a winger then I'm even more for it. If he turns out to be our only signing then it's time for Garlick to move on

Last guy we got from Brighton hasn't done badly for us

Not really because you've still got wages to take into account. Experienced PL midfielder, he'll be £30k a week at least at Brighton so it'd similar here for at least a 2 year deal.

Just drains more money for a squad player that won't get ahead of Westwood/Brownhill barring injury and won't pay it back in any future fees

Sorry disagree. If he is 4th choice behind Cork, Westy and Josh, £30k a week for a 2 year deal with a relegation clause is fine. Provided we sign a proper right winger that can get us excited a bit etc.

If the tweet is accurate, that looks like Tarkowski is West Ham bound, £35m is what the club have been holding out for, so I'm told.

I don’t really get the negativity on this.

He’s a proven Premier League player who Dyche clearly rates and who can make an immediate contribution to our team, at what amounts to a very limited cost (when we’re clearly low on funds).

I’d far rather this than a youngster from the league below who wouldn’t get a game, or a loan like Chalobah who won’t get a game. Sensible business in our circumstances. With our squad problems this season is about staying up, he will help us do that.

My concern is that ~£30K a week takes money out of the pot to sign a proper right winger.

And it's money we'll never recoup. So in two season's time we'll be in exactly the same place, needing more bodies but barely any money to do that with so we sign another ageing stopgap for a not insignificant chunk of our budget meaning less money to spend on improving the team and on and on it goes. Need to be thinking more long term.

On the Stephens story, it has come from Andy Naylor and he knows what’s going on at Brighton as well as anyone. I would take it as read virtually if he says it’s happening.

if he's fit I would expect him to play at the weekend and push Brownhill out to the wing
Yes and it's worth £1m if that gets us 3 points and he never plays again. That's how mad it's got.

You could argue there is more in the pot with the wages of Lennon, Hart, Hendrick etc having left to use.

On that Brighton messageboard someone else posted a link to, it seemed the BHA fans in the main only had good things to say about Stephens. Makes a change to the usual 'he's crap because he's leaving' narrative.

For me, a PL standard midfielder for less than a million is an absolute steal.

On the plus side, if he's a player Dyche has wanted before you know he's likely to fit very well into our system, rather than a player who's more of an unknown.

Yeah, so why tie it up in another player in the vein of Lennon and Hart? A player who will be leaving in 2 years time for nothing, having barely featured. Why not be smart with it?
