PS5

Post by williamjblazkowicz » Sun Sep 20, 2020 9:12 am

A little surprised I haven't spotted a topic on this already. Has anyone else pre-ordered the PS5? Or have you opted for the Xbox Series X? Only a couple of months to wait.

What can it do that the PS4 can't?

It's mind blowing how far these gaming technologies have come in 30 years.

Very nice! Have you always preferred Xbox? I did give it a look (isn't it the more powerful console of the two?) but the PS exclusives are just too persuasive for me overall.

I use to have a play station 2 then a few people I know got an x box so I followed suite had one ever since . I think the xbox series x just slightly beats the ps5 with performance, spec etc . I suppose its a choice of preference

I won't pretend to know a lot about this -- hopefully someone more tech-savvy than me can provide a good answer. However, my understanding is that the PS5 is a lot more powerful which allows game developers more freedom in terms of what they can do when designing games. Here's a comparison of the specs if that's of interest: https://www.pushsquare.com/guides/ps5-v ... comparison

Agree that video games have come very far. I remember being astonished seeing Star Fox on Nintendo for the first time!

Quite fancy the PS5, with the Haptic controller.

I look forward to the day we can game like they do in Ready Player One

Will get something in the new year when I've got the cash, but also allows time for the new consoles to get any issues ironed out

They will both be more than just “good”! It’s a bit like the evolution of TVs and razor blades - how can they keep getting better??

For me the biggest jump was PS2 to 3 - when I saw the opening scenes to R:FoM and MotorStorm it was astonishing!

Forgot to add, my boys have the One X, so I suspect they'll get the new Xbox.
If they do I'll go have a play on theirs to see how it is.

Whatever one I get, I'll also be getting a better TV, I don't even have 4k yet.

Specs are all good and well but it's about games and Sony will be bringing new games to the table way early then Xbox.

I have a 4K TV but it's 44 inch and we sit 3 meters away from it. It's way too small for the distance. Thinking of upgrading to a 65-inch TV. Will maybe wait for Black Friday and see if I can snag the LG C9 OLED for cheap. Otherwise the Sony X900H is supposed to be excellent and will probably be more affordable.

I'll be going to chat to the same lad in Curry's who sold me the TV for my boys.
I went to buy them a Samsung, but he convinced me the cheaper Panasonic was a better option, due to the quality of the HDMI port and in all fairness, its been a brilliant TV for gaming.

I've pre-ordered the PS5, but will be getting the Xbox Series X with Game Pass Unlimited on the £28 a month deal. That's just too good a deal to pass up.

I'll be getting cross platform games on the Xbox Series X because it is quite a bit more powerful than the PS5.

Also, if you don't have a 4K TV, the Series S is an amazing deal and the CPU in it is still faster than the PS5. The GPU isn't. but it doesn't need to be if you don't want 4k.

I would test it out before buying.

It's far harder to see all the screen which can make a big difference in games.

I have one pre ordered.

PlayStation has the best games that are exclusive to the system, that’s been a fact going back almost two decades at this point. Xbox is cheaper but you get what you pay for when it comes to the games.

If all you play is Call of Duty, FIFA etc (I.e, games on all platforms) then I’d go for an Xbox as it’s cheaper. If you want really stunning, adult, emotional storylines such as The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War etc, then you get a PlayStation.

The other factor to consider is that if you have a PC, there is basically no point getting an Xbox whatsoever. You can pay £10 a month and get Xbox Gamepass and play every single exclusive Xbox game day and date on your PC with no need for Xbox hardware.

3m away you're really looking at projector size displays to make the most of uhd but a 65" will certainly be a big improvement. The lg c9 is a 2019 model, end of life now replaced by the cx.

The sony x900h is called xh9005, xh9006, xh9096 or even xh9205 depending where you buy it from in the UK. It's a new 2020 model. It's a poor choice for the new consoles as despite promised support for hdmi 2.1 it only reaches around 800 nits peak brightness which is far below recommended for hdr. It's predecessor the xf9005 made two years ago got brighter and was a better overall TV. If you decide on an LCD TV instead of oled you're better off looking at Samsung, Q80T or higher. The more you spend, the better hdr will be.

To give you an idea of the minimum you need for a true hdr TV:

LCD TVs need about 1000 nits minimum, 1500 is preferred. If you don't reach this amount you'll get problems in some titles with the picture being washed out, or being too dim.

Oled TVs, well any is good enough with hdr, they all reach around 600-700 which is fine when you have per pixel dimming and better blacks and contrast.

Unfortunately the downside to this new tech is prices are higher and higher. So the starting price for a 55" TV for use with one of the new consoles is likely going to be around 1k. With better models being more expensive.

As with anything, don't buy the TV before the console either or you'll get stuck with something you can't return if it doesn't play ball. It's best to wait to buy anyway when TVs are currently priced so high.

Brilliant, thanks for all the info. Certainly some food for thought! My plan is to purchase on Black Friday which is after PS5 has been launched. Fingers crossed I find a good deal and a good match for the console!

If he wants to play it as a game and not a simulator then he's better off getting the new Xbox. I have the simulator on my PC which cost around £900 and it only just runs on the highest graphic settings. The Xbox version will be optimised and simplified for use with a controller etc, plus you'll save hundreds of pounds!

You're best waiting to upgrade to one of the new consoles now since they are just on the horizon. Will be cheaper than a pc. Only thing is you might have to wait for the game a little longer and also wait to purchase s joystick.

What you don't want to do is go out and purchase a one X right now. If you go that route you're best waiting anyway because they'll be a new Xbox series c and the new release will squash the prices of the old consoles like the one X anyway.

In short. Wait. Save up if you can. Should be worth it.

As for the TV you shouldn't need to upgrade if he's still running a HD one, but he'll get a far better gaming experience in the long run if you can muster up about 1k for a 48-55" TV.

My launch-day PS4 begs to differ, must have had thousands of hours of play time between me and the kids and it’s still going strong.

My 360 on the other hand went through several repairs and replacements during its life cycle

Interestingly I had the reverse, my PS3 failed numerous times and had to go back for repair, whereas my XBox One X is fantastic

Too early for me to jump in even though the specs look rather tempting. I usually wait 18 months or so for the first significant price drop. I won't pay through the nose to be an unpaid beta testers.

yeah same here with the XBOX 360 which is why I then got a PS4 - but at the time the forums were full of the PS4 having over heating issues at launch.

It's a bit wider than that, this is a massive aquisition. They are buying ZeniMax media which includes all of the following. They also bought BioWare a little while ago, so Xbox Series X will be the place to go for RPG's this generation:

ZeniMax Media Inc. is an American video game holding company based in Rockville, Maryland, and founded in 1999. The company owns id Software (developer of the Doom, Quake and Rage series), Arkane Studios (developer of Dishonored and Prey), MachineGames (developer of the Wolfenstein series),[3] Tango Gameworks (developer of The Evil Within),[4] publisher Bethesda Softworks with its Bethesda Game Studios (developer of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series) and ZeniMax Online Studios (developer of The Elder Scrolls Online). On September 21, 2020, Microsoft announced they entered into an agreement to acquire ZeniMax Media and all its subsidaries for $7.5 billion.

I’d like a ps5 but everywhere has sold out

I wouldn’t be opposed to getting an Xbox, but the fact they’ve released a “mini” version with lower specs makes me think the game developers will have to optimise Xbox games for the lower system settings. I might be talking rubbish though.

You can "rent" an xbox X or whatever its called with the game pass ultimate for £22-30 a month depending on spec.

Look on the smyths or game website.

A gaming PC will cost you at least £1200 and more like 15-1700 for a good one

Managed to pre order one on Amazon, really looking forward to it.

Microsoft really look to be struggling for decent exclusives IMO, although now they’ve purchased Bethesda that could all change.

God of War was incredible

I hope for your sake your lad is different from the other lads that work in Currys.

It's best to wait to buy anyway when TVs are currently priced so high.
soooooooooooo to get the best out of the new consoles you need a tv with hdmi 2.1 and there are very few about at the moment that aren't well over-priced- it's another reason i'm holding back on everything, the technology is about to change

I know! I'm just referring to the games I particularly like that are affected! Not too fussed about Elder Scrolls, for example. As you say, it's a massive acquisition.

I’d like a ps5 but everywhere has sold out

I wouldn’t be opposed to getting an Xbox, but the fact they’ve released a “mini” version with lower specs makes me think the game developers will have to optimise Xbox games for the lower system settings. I might be talking rubbish though.
Yeah, you are. They have the same CPU. The GPU is less powerfull, but that is because it only has to drive 1440p not 4k. There is a Digital Foundry interview with CodeMasters this week on Dirt 5 and he clearly states that the development is the same for both, with the lowerspec GPU perfectly suited to the lower resolution.

Basically, yeah.

The only true way to future proof will be the LG OLEDs and that's because they are the only TVs that tick all the boxes.
  • Capable with HDR (remarkable how many TVs don't meet this criteria).
Dolby Vision support - not integral as a non Dolby Vision TV will fall back to HDR10, but nonetheless promised titles in 2021.
    HDMI 2.1 VRR
Sadly if you want an LCD TV instead, perhaps because your usage is susceptible to burn in then you can't check all those boxes.

And if you are buying a TV smaller than 55" your choice is even worse.

And if you are buying a smaller TV with a limited budget you're basically out of luck completely.

In my own opinion the quality of HDR reproduction on a TV is first and foremost the most important factor, with a limited budget in the UK the Hisense U8Q is looking to be the best buy. It lacks VRR but it's so much cheaper than competing TVs. Hisense sell there TVs close to cost.

To get similar kind of HDR from a Korean/Japanese brand you need to look at LG OLEDs, Sony OLEDs, Panasonic OLEDs, the Samsung Q90T or Sony XH9505 LCD TVs. LG OLEDs ticks all, Samsung ticks all but Dolby Vision. Sony LCD TV and OLEDs/Panasonic OLEDs are like the Hisense U8Q and ticks all but HDMI VRR.

As with all new tech expect teething issues, things won't work as intended to begin with and if you do buy close to release you can expect problems that may never be fixed. Don't become a beta tester for new tech and wait for people to review and test the consoles with TVs first.

If you can wait until 2021 or 2022 even better. If you are buying an LCD that's even more important to remember as soon they will look out of date. Samsung are in the process of dumping LCD TV production for their higher end TVs and will be buying 3rd party panels for there TVs instead. They'll move soon to OLEDs themselves. So beware if you do buy now, that LCD TV may look a little more out of date sooner than you'd think.

Don't touch LGs/Panasonic LCD TVs. You may be tempted looking at specs that they tick a lot of boxes. They aren't bad TVs for watching general TV but they don't make the cut at all in this modern HDR era.

Worth also be a bit wary with the BX OLED supporting HDMI 2.1 VRR properly, wait for tests with the consoles first.

Outside of Europe basically TCL/Hisense again are the best value options on a budget TCL R625/Hisense H9G. Vizio may be competitive but like other cheaper TVs lack HDMI 2.1 VRR.
Sony XH9505 sold as X950H in NA.

Beware all LCD TVs have poor viewing angles, particularly one's that aren't the very highest end.

Best time to buy a TV is spring each year as the new models are announced, released and older go on clearance sales. Second best time is between Black Friday and January sales.

Last bit of advice: don't get tricked by marketing. QLED is not a new display tech like OLED, it's marketing for LCD TVs.
HDR - every TV and his dog accepts the signal, but very few (more expensive) models can display it correctly and without issues .

In absolute worse case scenario if you can't afford a capable HDR TV you can just disable HDR on the console some titles may also let you configure HDR to work with less problems on cheaper TVs but it's a workaround that may not always be possible.

That makes sense. I’m probably better with the cheap Xbox then as my tv isn’t 4k
