Re: STEVENS
Predicted lineups scattered about seem to suggest Stephens partnering Westwood in the middle with Brownhill right.

Re: STEVENS
Let's hope the Saints are Shakin in their boots facing our new signing Brownhill will go on the right for now at least, what happens when the injured players start returning is up for debate, but it's a nice problem to have for once.

Re: STEVENS
I feel it'll be a straightforward competition when JBG & Cork is back... 2 in the middle from Cork, Westwood, Brownhill and Stephens. Some very decent competition there and like you say, a nice problem.

Re: STEVENS
Thought this was a new signing. We always have trouble with the name of one player don’t we ? Thankfully we don’t have too many foreign names.

I was reading on Facebook and several people were putting "dale Stephens" - it was like they genuinely thought his first name had to be lowercase

Re: STEVENS
Yes precisely we don't even know when Cork will return, or when he'll be up to full fitness, so it makes sense to plug the gap now, and for the reported fee Stevens was a no-brainer, he's got PL nous as well, which we'll no doubt need if the going gets tough towards the end of the season.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Sat Sep 26, 2020 2:56 pmI feel it'll be a straightforward competition when JBG & Cork is back... 2 in the middle from Cork, Westwood, Brownhill and Stephens. Our biggest problem at the moment is the amount of injuries we're carrying to regulars, you might expect 1 or 2 to be missing at the same time. but not 6 or 7, that casualty count would test even the bigger clubs, let alone a mid-table team with a relatively small squad.
Get a few of the wounded back and we'll look a totally different outfit, the key is that we manage to pick up enough points to ensure we're not cut adrift before they all return to the fold, we've shown that at full strength we're more than capable of going on long runs of form, but as it stands we're very much down to the bare bones. and the period up until Christmas could be tough, if we can somehow nick 5-6 wins in the 1st half of the campaign, then I'll be more than confident we'll amass enough points to easily survive, but it's getting those wins that'll be a tough proposition.
That's why the 2 games before the international break are crucial for us. 4 points from the Southampton & Newcastle games will set us up nicely for the rest of the season, but the longer we go without picking up that 1st win, the more the pressure will build.

Re: STEVENS
I’d expect Stephens to definitely start if Tarks doesn’t make it and play in a deep lying role to protect the CB’s and nullify the threat from Ings.

best way to nullify Ings is tell him other clubs are interested in him!ashtonlongsider wrote: ↑Sat Sep 26, 2020 3:33 pmplay in a deep lying role to protect the CB’s and nullify the threat from Ings

Some people, these days find things like this cause them distress and are upset. They must have cheered up though when a full stop wasn't used.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Sat Sep 26, 2020 3:02 pmI was reading on Facebook and several people were putting "dale Stephens" - it was like they genuinely thought his first name had to be lowercase

Thought he was neat and tidy, good player.
He'll get better when he gets used to his team mates.

Brighton were clearly happy to let him go, which suggests their squad is improving and we're standing still.
Same situation with Bardsley, he was signed as cover 2 or 3 years ago and now he's a regular starter for us.

Re: STEVENS
He started most of last season and we finished tenth with our joint highest points haul.
But yeah we're going backwards because our right back is old and unfashionable.

Re: STEVENS
Bardsley is amazing. I swear to God there are people who would value Bardsley more were he actually weaker in the tackle because surely such an inadequacy would point to...I don't know...some greater imagined ability in some other part of his game...surely? Indicative of a more cultured footballer or summat? La Philosophie puts a certain stock in pussies incapable of winning a second ball, because winning the second ball is beneath La Philosophie. It's the FIFA game approach: "He's rated 72, but only because he's got decent stamina and tackling and marking, but he's only got 48 at dribbling and 45 at crossing, this defender has, and he's not got finesse shot so he can **** off as far as I'm concerned"; such is the lunacy EA's rubbish games have bequeathed to modern football. That and modern punditry. Being able to win a ball isn't as well appreciated as it was a few years ago.

they have a wealthy owner, we can't just magic money out of the River Calder - I know, I've tried
Re: STEVENS
Villa were happy to let Westwood go as well.
Have they got better than him in the roll he plays?
No
Re: STEVENS
When you only make short passes to the nearest player behind you it’s unlikely you will give the call away much.
