Post by DomBFC1882 » Sun Sep 27, 2020 7:29 pm

I don't know if anyones watching but he's bang on what he's just been saying about these penalty decisions and it being the entertainment business. Shame he ever managed them lot but he's a likeable guy

Souness stated that these controversial VAR penalty decisions for handball were giving fans something to talk about in the office on Monday mornings and that was the intention of the Rule Makers.

But, didn't football fans have that before the introduction of VAR?

Then, the discussion was whether we should have been awarded a penalty or was the goal awarded offside?

Surely, VAR was supposed to remove any controversy.

It can’t because the decision on whether it’s a foul is subjective at the end of the day

He was talking about this rule leading to more penalties/goals which equals more entertainment as it is a game at the end of the day.

He also said that it provided a talking point for fans in the office on Monday mornings. :D

Hated him as a footballer, disliked him as a manager, like him as a pundit and having watched the Hanson documentary would love to have a beer with the three Jocks.... so either he/l or both of us are mellowing.

As for his comments, it gives them things to discuss in the studio... because it is as unreliable as previous refereeing decisions, only with another layer to analyse.

My passion is Burnley football club... just my luck, I get my dream of seeing us in the elite (like my dad did), just as football became sh1t.

Did he manage to blame Pogba for the new handball rule?

For me one of the best pundits on the Sky panel.

He says it how it is. I know Roy Keane isn't everybody's cup of tea, but he's another I like as a pundit.

Then you get Jamie Redknapp who can only say the obvious. He'll say what a child knows and offers zero insight into the game.

He’s a good pundit. I like pundits who’ve actually achieved something in the game.

John Terry does too, this is brilliant.

I remember when people said that VAR would take away the controversy that we all like to talk about from a football match

For me, this was always going to be a work in progress and required patience and was never going to be perfect.

It needs tweaking as time goes on.

It’s been in use nearly 8 years now. How long you going to give it?

Not in the UK it hasn't.

Don't forget, England decided to use a different method to everyone else and now we are aligning with everyone else.
It will settle itself down.

Tweaking? It's a car crash it needs scrapping for all the wrongs & rights the old system relied more upon human error inevitably bringing about some flaws it seemed to be based upon common sense & for all intent & purposes by & large the decisions evened themselves out over the course.

To me Souness's argument made no sense at all. He was suggesting that people will be more entertained by bad decisions. It certainly gets people talking, but it goes completely against the sporting ethos that makes football the great game that it is. Teams score goals through the forward players getting the better of the opposition's defence, creating chances and scoring goals by that means. In the case of Newcastle yesterday, they didn't get the better of the Spurs defence, and they didn't use their skill to create a chance. They just got a lucky bounce. It goes completely against the ethos of the game and I'm surprised Souness couldn't see that.

I suspect this rule is being brought in to benefit the wealthier clubs whose teams tend to do most of the attacking, but can at times be thwarted by a well-organised, resolute defence. This new rule seems to be about goals for free as a reward for doing most of the attacking; but that's not what football is.

Perhaps Graeme Souness is as cheesed off as quite a number of fans with the way that they are messing about with the game and changing Laws to accommodate VAR. He may have said what he did because he doesn't agree with what is happening, however, he knows that they will not revert to status quo, in fact, as he said, you just need to get used to it because there will be more to come!
Football at this level is becoming unwatchable because it is turning into a lottery!

Don’t like him as a pundit. Seems very bitter about something. He was highly critical of our club and Dyche when we put money into the training complex instead of the team.

At the moment penalties are random. You might as well give each manager a dice and let him roll it three times a game; if he throws a 6, his side gets a penalty. That's not entertainment.

All changes in laws (starting with offside), are designed to see more goals.
