TV revenue covers wages ok but if you want to invest in new signings then you need a strong backer or you need to move players on for a profit and reinvest the proceeds. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to lose our saleable assets at this point because we are light on numbers as it is and can’t risk not being able to adequately replace them. The Board and Dyche have done a great job to get us to where we are and keep us in the a Premier League so far, but there is only so long that we can defy gravity without new external Investment.

if we go down its only because the gulf in finance has got too wide for us now. Without a wealthy backer/ investors it was always going to happen just surprised reality has really hit in covid year where everyone was rumoured to be spending cautious this transfer window.
Simple as that unfortunately.
Or the failure to plan for the future, not listening to the expert ( SD ) when he highlighted potential issues 18 months in advance, not having a sustainable business model etc etc

Not sure if that is wholly true MACCA

Failing to plan for the future - when SD, in the main, just wanted to bring in older, "experienced" players with no resale value (no planning for the future in that)

Highlighting potential issues 18 months in advance - again this argument surrounded some older players (on good wages) such as Lennon, Hart and Bardsley The exception being Hendrick but we did offer him an extended contract 18 months ago which he turned down (we then took up the option of the extra year as a last resort to keeping him at that time). Same applies now with a further 6 ooc next summer (not inc youngsters like Dunne, Benson and Thomas). How many of those 6 would you want us to keep on ?

Sustainable business plan - Based on the wealth of our current directors, potential income, and wages, I would have thought having no debt and cash in the bank showed a fairly successful business model (at our level) up until this summer

Covid has scuppered such a model and maybe the encouragement of investment from ALK shows the club are fully aware they cannot maintain the monies required. This move may be some 6/12 months late but foresight of the reasons for our current financial situation is a wonderful gift that not many people have

You lot all remember that Shaqiri played for Stoke before Liverpool?

How good was he there lads?

He's not a player that we need
Erm, he was excellent, which is why Liverpool saw fit to go and buy him.

I very much doubt the likes of Wells, Walter's, Lennon, Hart , Bardsley, Vydra, Gibson etc were Mr Dyches first choice targets, yes some may have been, but I'm positive some would have been way down the list and only brought in as they were cheaper options or could "do a job" short term.

Regards having cash in the bank, maybe that cash spent on players instead or used to bring in number 1 targets would mean we had a younger squad now, a more valuable/re sale value of players here and therefore not looking threadbare.

Anyway what will be, will be.

We all have opinions on what we think was / is the best way forward.

Breaking - Funds to be released

Burnley Football Club do not want to leave the transfer window to chance on deadline day. In case other clubs do not receive our offers prior to the final hour a back up system is to be put in place. Mike Garlick is not prepared to authorise funds for a back up fax machine but Clive Holt’s careful negotiations have resulted in the generous release of funds to provide ink for the old telegraphy machine.

I have been saying on here for the last 2 years that they has been no real planning for the first team other than that they hope one or two young lads come through - history shows us we are woeful at that as well

They delay the away shirt so people have more chance to buy both. If they released them together then the likely scenario is people choosing one or the other.

By having two launches it maximises sales.

that's as maybe and fairly obvious - doesn't change the fact that every PL team managed to release home and away strips long before we did (I think maybe 1 released a week before us but can't remember who that was ).

We have to be better at basic stuff like this - and don't get me wrong, I was involved with a manufacturer a good 20 years ago that supplied the club with merchandise and we have come an awfully long way since then !!

For a quarter of the money, as a relatively unknown.
He'd played for Bayern and Inter and been to two World Cups by that point. Definitely not relatively unknown.

The Harry Wilson deal was in "grave doubt" as soon as it became clear Tarks wouldn't be moving on for a chunky fee.

Agreed-I posted the same Wednesday when it emerged that JT was likely to stay
Suspect our only hope now is a free transfer or loans. Hopefully an acceptance from the Board, even though they do not admit it, that even SD may not be able to keep us up this season, having seen how some of the potential lower clubs have strengthened and picked up points(Villa, Palace, Newcastle, Brighton, West Ham,Leeds). Beginning to think that any hope we have of getting the magical 40 points is totally dependent on avoiding further injuries this season, and getting those currently injured fit. If we are in bottom end in the next window then I think JT really will force a move, and Nick Pope may well also reflect on his chance of playing for England if he stays. Sad times for our supporters

If we don't want to fork out the amount Liverpool are asking for could we not get him on a season long loan with a clause that we buy him for the original amount if we stay up. If there are no other clubs interested then surely it would be better for him to be playing first team football for us.

Don't think we have 1. It took us 4 years to get Stephens, that was probably done via smoke signals.

Question:

Would you take Eliasson (£2.7m according to reports) & BOS (£4.7m) over Watkins £16m total?

That would give us cover for Dwight and JBG. Both might not be starters, as Wilson may be, but could be effective options from the bench/cover. Would also be cheaper wages-wise.

I think I would in these cash-strapped times.

Mike Garlick is not prepared to authorise funds for a back up fax machine but Clive Holt’s careful negotiations have resulted in the generous release of funds to provide ink for the old telegraphy machine.
From The Times, Tues 29 Sept 2020: Japanese aim to stamp out fax machines, paper and ink

Japan is attempting to bring its bureaucracy into the digital age by declaring war on the fax machine.

Despite its image as a nation of futuristic technology, Japan’s offices are surprisingly old-fashioned in their habits and stubbornly loyal to the fax. Some 95 per cent of businesses and more than a third of households still have them.

Their use is connected to an even older technology — hanko, the stamps which are used for signing contracts and approving corporate and bureaucratic documents.

Taro Kono, the minister in charge of government reform, has declared an end to the “culture” of paper and ink.

“Why do we need to print out paper?” he asked at a press conference. “In many cases, it’s simply because the hanko stamp is required. So if we can put a stop to that culture, it will naturally do away with the need for printing and faxing.” Hanko are the breadth of a 5p coin, engraved with a design incorporating the owner’s name. The finest are masterpieces of craftsmanship, often carved from ivory.

Hanko are widely used to stamp official documents, from bank withdrawals to contracts, and to signal approval of business documents. Many companies and government departments use hanko, whose red imprints indicate that documents have been read and approved.

Self-isolating employees have reported being forced to commute to their offices solely to get stamps from colleagues on a business document.

Mr Kono, 57, said: “As far as administrative procedures are concerned, I want to end the culture of stamping hanko just for the sake of it.”

Yoshihide Suga, 71, Japan’s new prime minister, has often spoken of plans to establish a “digital agency” to implement technological upgrades and improve efficiency across government, business and society. Mr Suga’s youngest cabinet member, Shinjiro Koizumi, 39, the environment minister, is cutting down on the use of hanko. “We have a hanko that only the minister is permitted to use. My staff sometimes come up to my room just so they can ask me to stamp documents,” Mr Koizumi, said. “It is too inefficient.”

While some workers appreciate the “dignity” of hanko, 70 per cent find them a burden, a survey found last year. There is opposition to the reforms, including from the parliamentary group to protect Japanese hanko culture. Under the previous prime minister, Shinzo Abe, even the country’s IT minister, Naokazu Takemoto, 79, was an enthusiast for seals and gave a speech promising to protect the businesses of hanko makers.

Do you mean the prices charged for Burnley kit is lower than the price charged for ManU* kit? Who'd have thought that might happen?

* For ManU substitute Man City/Liverpool/Everton/Chelsea/Arsenal/Spurs and so on.

Are we getting "bargain" prices?

You think the club would think Sean Dyche, cannot keep us in the premier league? We finished comfortably 10th last year and the only regular starter we’ve lost is Jeff Hendrick, add to that Joe Hart who didn’t play a minute in the premier league and Arron lennon who invariably came on a sub late in games. We’ve signed a replacement for joe hart in will Norris, and BPF looks like being a more than adequate back up.
We’ve signed Stephens( not to everyone’s liking ) who has bags of PL experience, once our injury crisis ends and Barnes,Mee,JBG,Brady and cork return to the fold, I think we look quite strong!
And who knows, we might pull a couple of rabbits out of the hat before the transfer window shuts

In a heart beat, if someone offered me Eliasson and BOS for 7.5m instead of paying 15m for Wilson I would snap their hand off.

Both of them are just as good as Wilson, but contribute more from open play in terms of creativity. On the financial front they are young with development potential left in the tank ( even if we only improve their defensive games ) and it is hard to imagine how we would lose much money on them at those prices, even if they don't prove to be EPL standard. Both of them could also become a lot more valuable. If Wilson doesn't cut it we could lose a lot on a 12-15m outlay.

I could also imagine Garlick rushing to pull out his cheque book to sign two players for 7.5m and having some very severe reservations about spending what could be 15m+ on one player.

However, like I mentioned on the Harry Wilson thread I might prefer Eliasson and Connor Roberts from Swansea - as a stop gap defensive right midfielder ( moving to his favoured right back slot next year ).

That could also leave us with enough left over from not buying Wilson to bring in Ben Davies from Preston to fill the left sided centre back slot. We could send them Dunne to fill his place ( giving them a good player and Dunne some Championship experience ).

I still like the idea of us signing Ryan Manning of QPR as well. With some more experience playing at left back and some development work on his defensive game he could be a good player for us. I'm guessing that he would cost 2-3m, with it more likely to be the 2m mark ( or maybe even less ).

When we had Hendrick in the side we had no right winger and it worked out pretty well, so why the desperate need for one now?

Honestly, from the snippets in the last couple of press conference I wouldn't be surprised if we have it in mind to go with what we have got.

The idea being to risk it and regroup so we can have another go at it in the more difficult Covid Winter window.

If that is the case then our foray into the Winter market should be preceded by some head chopping in our recruitment department and the return of the key recruitment strategy forming to the Garlick + Dyche partnership - supported by our new analytical input.

Well you will know a lot more about it than me then. Maybe we get it cheaper by being the last club that receives stock? We certainly sell it cheaper than the rest.
Honestly, I can think of no obvious reason for us to be so late with the release. Hopefully someone might know and can enlighten us all. Granted, it's not a huge injection of cash to the club but it is still a revenue stream - if it wasn't important they would give them away......

Jesus Christ man. Sad times for our supporters? We’ve just lost two games. Get a grip you drama queen.

Maybe we don’t think he’s good enough. It appears that no other PL clubs do either.

I admire your confidence but history is not a guarantee for future success. I accept what you say about ourselves-10th was an amazing achievement, probably better than when we finished 7th in view of the circumstances.

What we need to acknowledge though is how the teams finishing below us have strengthened. Obviously 3 of those got relegated. However Newcastle, Brighton (they could afford to let Stephens go), Villa, and Palace have strengthened immensely. I expect Villa to finish in the top 10 and Brighton may have a chance too. Both have goals in them. Southampton I am not sure about but they took 3 points off us last week at home, and are capable of away wins the way they are set up. Leeds have strengthened too-and whilst they will concede goals they will also amass a number of points and already look stronger than the 3 relegated clubs of last season. Personally other than Fulham and WBA I am struggling at present to feel confident . I did not expect in July with a thread bare squad to have only have signed one player with less than 4 days to go to the window closing

Accepted Big Vince.I am not normally a half-empty person. Maybe the word I am looking for is "realistic" having watched nearly every game this season and seeing how many of the lower clubs fared.
Lets see what Newcastle brings and you never know we may pull a few rabbits out of the hat in terms of recruitment-now thats me being half-full

It worries me that so many clubs are bringing in lots of players, all of which everyone seems convinced make them so much stronger than Burnley, while our fans point out how inept our transfer policy is.

I’m just consoling myself that we have the same nonsense talked every transfer window.

Hendrick has gone who was playing there due to injury, and also our back up RW Lennon also left, but as things stand, suppose we can always hope Pieters suddenly turns into Beckham for 1 season in a remarkable change in positions and favoured foot

I think the Newcastle game will be interesting, they had 3 shots on target in 3 games, and that includes their ridiculous penalty against spurs at the weekend, I’m confident that we’ll get a positive result in the game

Good grief.
Go on, how did we attack down the right hand side with Hendrick in the team?

Everything came down our left last season, the one where we finished on 54 points btw.

Not read through all the threads so sorry if this has been mentioned but today's daily mail says we have asked about
Dundee utd striker Lawrence Shankland, nope I've not heard of him either!
