DAWSON AT £4M
Craig Dawson can leave at £4m .Appreciate he is 30, but never in a million years are we in the market to get a younger and better CH
Means we dont need to rush Ben back-he will need at least two full games with the U-23s. It means we can give Long a break and not start him v Spurs and Chelsea. When Ben is eventually match fit we can assess Bardsley and Dawsons performances to see what our best option is at RB. We need to get back to keeping clean sheets which is a key reason for our points tally last year.
If we cant find £4m for a manager thats brought in over £720m I despair-but we need to move quick

I'd go in at £150k and see what they say. That's what we paid for Mark Winstanley, if you need a benchmark.

We've been linked to him for that long that I honestly thought he was at least 33 by now.

He seems to have been around for ages, 30 isnt a bad age for how we defend, and the fee is reasonable.
Think he is a perfect 3rd choice CB defender for us, can cover RB in emergencies too with Lowton not yet fit.
Hopefully there's lefs in this, he makes us instantly better defensively than any CB partnership put out so far this season, and has the added bonus of being a threat in the opposition box too
Would like to see him brought in.

Re: DAWSON AT £4M
We are where we are and £4m for Dawson is a complete nil brainer. 3 year contract, £1.33m per year plus wages etc. Cover for CB, potentially our best starter at RB, can play in the Championship if we go down. Huge threat at the other end. Dyche likes him. Player should be keen - very high chance of him playing 20-30 games a season.
It's so obvious that we have to snap him up ASAP in our current grim predicament that it's pretty much guaranteed it won't happen. That seems to be the way things work at the club these days.

Re: DAWSON AT £4M
Hasn’t he been relegated two years on the trot? A bad omen. He might make it a hat trick.
Re: DAWSON AT £4M
Ah, the annual Craig Dawson Thread. Maybe this year we will secure his services, and 4 million isn’t a fortune for someone who has potentially 3 or 4 years football left in him. We have got a wasted 15 million tied up elsewhere remember?
Dawson would complement Tarkowski well if Ben Mee is still out or gets injured again. Should imagine his current wages are comparable to what we can offer. No brainer in my book.

If Dyche likes him, then Garlick will hate him the way this school yard game of tennis is going. No chance, but would fit our set up perfectly..

Re: DAWSON AT £4M
Remember Duff doing a decent job well into his 30’s, plenty of decent CHs do, if your positional awareness is good you can make up for the loss of pace.
There’s an odd opinion that 30 is old on here? Not sure what age bracket that opinion comes from

Didn't someone on this message board mention yesterday that he was offered to Dyche who said no?

Please don't encourage Dyche to bring any more over 30s into the retirement home we are currently running in.

Re: DAWSON AT £4M
Dawson wouldn't be a bad capture, he could certainly slot into central defence with Tarky until Ben returns, and as others have pointed out, he can also cover RB, if we're going to persist with a small squad versatility will be important, as it's inevitable we'll suffer injuries throughout the season due to the hectic schedule.
The downside is £4m is a sizable sum in our current finances, and that doesn't include his wages, he's yet another 30+ player, who'll have no sell-on value, and if everyone is fit how often will he be called upon, we do need a reserve centre back though, as Kev Long for all his desire is lacking at the very top level, and that can prove very costly against the top strikers in the PL.

Actually, the biggest word was "Particularly".
Although "Championship" is also a 12-letter word but OP spelled it as "Championsip".

Les Dawson (no relation) is on Sky Arts this evening 10pm, playing the piano in a Paris brothel in the 1950s.

We're massively short of Premier League quality in depth at centre-back and he would significantly improve our squad in that position as well as offering RB cover as mentioned.
I don't mind that he's 30. If you're good enough, you're young enough, particularly at that price and some players keep on going into their mid-30s.
You also have to consider the Tarky situation next summer. With one year left on his contract if we couldn't get him to sign a new one and we're forced to sell then we would have the cover at CB while we re-invest the money on a younger CB.

Not convinced West Ham would have a bearing. He's Rochdale born and bred, a move back home may well suit him better than staying in the Smoke.

Re: DAWSON AT £4M
On the other hand he presumably knows that if Tarkowski and Mee are both fit he will be sitting on the bench all year. Might he get a place in West Ham;s team?arise_sir_charge wrote: ↑Wed Oct 07, 2020 11:57 amNot convinced West Ham would have a bearing. Re: DAWSON AT £4M
He'd be an OK signing. It would be continuing the pattern of bringing in stopgaps rather than younger players who can be on the bench for a year or so and then hopefully fill in as someone leaves. There's only so long that pattern can continue without it becoming unsustainable.
Although I guess we may have just taken it a step back and the various U-23s will be doing that in a couple of years.

Re: DAWSON AT £4M
Whilst he might available has there been any news as to whether SD is actually interested in signing him?
Re: DAWSON AT £4M
You could say that we are bringing through players such as Dunne and Benson.aggi wrote: ↑Wed Oct 07, 2020 12:37 pmHe'd be an OK signing. Re: DAWSON AT £4M
Someone younger, willing to wait a season, would be nice.
Re: DAWSON AT £4M
What’s Lansbury up to these days
Re: DAWSON AT £4M
Dawson, Wilshere and Welbeck. I still think we need a right midfielder though. We should be calling around the 3 relegated sides Watford, Bournemouth and Norwich to see who they’re looking to get rid of. Watford loaned out Delofeu (albeit to another Pozo club) who would’ve been an incredible fit for us wide right.
We need to beef out the squad a little, some of the names who haven’t left the relegated sides...
Watford - Capoue, Gray, Deeney, Success, Hughes, Janmaat, Masina, Chalobah, Cleverley, Cathcart
Norwich - Byram, Buendia, Cantwell, Klose,

Dawson, ffs.

Re: DAWSON AT £4M
Probably get him for 2.5m. Fits our profile very well. Over 30. Northern (very local actually went to Haslingden High) and a tough lad.

Re: DAWSON AT £4M
But bringing in Dale Stephens has blocked any possible progression for Benson realistically. I'm guessing we'll offer Cork a new deal as well so that will be 4 central midfielders ahead of him, all tied down for the next 2 or 3 years.
Re: DAWSON AT £4M
Signing a centre back now would make sense. Tarky has two years left on his contract. If the club want to cash in which I'm sure they do they don't want to leave it until he's in the last year of his contract. They should get a replacement in now so that he's got months before the next transfer window to bed into our framework.
Dawson is an obvious candidate considering that we're looking to spend an absolute minimum.

When you say blocking progression you are assuming Benson is currently as good as good or better than a player who has made a 100 plus appearances in the top flight.

He's inferring that the younger player has less chance of progressing with an extra midfielder ahead of him.
