The comparison to hedge funds was to say the least embarrassing.

Sorry but I disagree with all that. Players moving up from lower level clubs has always happened - long before the days of £multi-million TV revenues the top teams scouted and bought players from lower division teams and none of those teams had received financial support from the 1st division. If no help is made available and some clubs disappear then other teams will rise to fill the void all with a more realistic financial model or new clubs will form to meet the need.

If the clubs in lower, less financially rewarded leagues are spending too much how is that the fault of teams like Burnley? Did we give money to Accrington Stanley in the 1960s when they were going bust for the sake of £5000 or so? Did any club (not supporters, I remember several collections being made outside grounds for us) offer to help when we were going bust in the 1980s.

Would we be able to control whether any help was being fed to support well run clubs who are struggling because of the loss of income and withhold it from those like Bolton or Bury before them where the owners were just taking the Mick? Or those that over-extended themselves by spending big and banking on getting promoted/not relegated and now find themselves stuck with expensive contracts to pay?

The bottom line is Sean Dyche is Manager of Burnley Football Club. When talking to the press that is all he needs to discuss. He was probably not comfortable and clearly ill suited to discuss the wider financial difficulties being visited on the lower leagues by the CV19 pandemic and the associated restrictions. So he should have kept his gob firmly shut. He didn't and it matters not what he said or what he meant, the general perception is that he held two fingers up to the lower leagues and said why should we give you money, F off. I know he didn't mean that but that is the perception and perception is truth, sadly.

Aldershot? Aldershot, I’m sorry but is that a football club?

Imagine that “Yea yeah, I’m a professional footballer yeah, for Aldershot”.

The share of TV revenues were shared throughout the leagues. That was the point of the 'Big Six' wanting the breakaway league.

That leaves all the other leagues very heavily reliant on owners and matchplay revenues.

No crowd for them is no income. For the prem, the TV funds still remain and that, for most, is the majority of their income.

If there was a levy on all agents of Prem players - say 30% of their fees and this was channelled mostly to L1 and 2 clubs with some going to non-league then all.would be sound.

Well I may well be in that cohort to have ‘misunderstood’ Dyche then.

I thought what he was saying is why is the football sector different to any other sector ? If the richer clubs are going to help out the clubs struggling (because of Covid) are for example the bigger more successful hedge fund managers going to bail out the smaller / less successful ones.

And I believe what the counter argument is that football is different to other sectors (and especially hedge fund managers !!). And that part of the reason why it is in the interest of richer clubs to not allow clubs to go to the wall is that our pyramid structure is important to the strength of our leagues and provide a source of progression for many players etc.

Now there may be other more refined reasons why Dyche was saying that this was not necessarily a fair policy. And he may think it hurts clubs like Burnley disproportionately more than the bigger / richer clubs. But the way he articulated it and the example he used was IMHO probably not the best way of getting across whatever point he was trying to make.

For what it’s worth there is nothing I have ever seen in the character of SD to suggest he would not be bothered about communities losing their football clubs or that he does not want these clubs to be supported to get through the impact of Covid. I think lots of other Premier League clubs genuinely would not care a jot if half of the 92 clubs went bust - but not for one minute would I think Burnley are like that. If some of the media have tried to paint Dyche and Burnley like that they don’t have a clue about Dyche or the club.

Disregarding the content of the article, I thought it was a poor and badly-judged comparison from Dyche.

Sean Dyche has spoken twice about PL funding the lower levels of the pyramid. On the first occasion in made the comments about hedge funds. On the second occasion, a few days later, he said he was wrong to make his first statement.

The first occasion has been reported by at least two newspapers, The Telegraph and The Guardian - there were 2 or 3 days between their respective reports.

The second time SD spoke was at the pre-match presser later that week. I've not seen SD's retraction reported in the press.

We've had (at least) two threads covering the two newspaper reports.

No I deduced it on the contents of the other extensive thread on the subject where posters on this forum clearly displayed their ignorance of the issue and what Dyche actually said

I find that quite arrogant. It's less than 10 years since Aldershot Town were in the football league. Their fans can tell you what Bury and Macclesfield have been through, they've gone into administration twice in 1992 (the demise of Aldershot FC) and again in 2013 after their relegation to the conference. I think it was a fairly good choice of clubs to be honest.

The Aldershot star is lucky football doesn't want to be compared to any other industry.

In another industry some might have said to him had he worked harder and better for his previous employers he may have been more successful

i wonder if the multi millionaire aldershot chairman expects a hand out from microsoft for his I.T. business?

I think the model will always be there but some clubs will fold but Phoenix clubs will replace them, players do develop at different rates but I'm not stockbridge park steels can claim that they are responsible for Vardy.

I thought someone said Dyche has apologised for his original comments ? I didn’t realise he had but if that’s correct why would he apologise ?

Genuine question - what did Dyche actually say (or mean) by his reference to hedge fund managers ?

Dyche had a very valid point in that why should ‘well run’ clubs in the Premier League bail out poorly run clubs who spend above what they should in order to pay players that they can’t afford. His comparisons with hedge funds was unusually sloppy but the point remains.

I suspect that Dyche would be happy for some of the PL tv revenue to trickle down the leagues to the clubs who are genuinely in difficulty due to issues out of their control. He’s probably also frustrated that we are one of the clubs having to cut our cloth, yet we’re not getting any help from the likes of Man City.
