European Premier League from 2022

Post by ClaretTony » Tue Oct 20, 2020 2:04 pm

Being reported that Liverpool and Manchester United are in talks with European clubs regards the setting up of a European Premier League from 2022. It's backed by FIFA and would included 18 clubs.

More than a dozen teams from England, France, Germany, Italy in Spain apparently involved in the talks.

Good riddance, I get that they bring the money and quality but I’m really not interested. It will be more of a level playing field

Don't let the door slam you in the backside on the way out. Or do let it. I don't care.

So I'm assuming this will be a "closed league" with no promotion or relegation?

Sounds exciting

They want to be careful what they wish for.

Traditional fans will be no more. Not that clubs like Liverpool and Man U care with fans in all countries anyway. But this is a mad idea motivated purely by money.

Man Utd and Liverpool buggering off to play with JP Morgan's funny money would be the best thing that has happened to English football in decades. Arsenal, Atleti, Dortmund, I hope their fans are bracing themselves for finishing the bottom of a league every year, losing more games than they win. Sounds fun. Those clubs' fans aren't as well equipped to deal with being rubbish like normal football fans are.

Real Madrid
Barcelona
Liverpool
Man United
Chelsea or another London club
Bayern Munich
PSG
Juventus
Milan
Ajax
Marseille or Monaco
another German club
Benfica
probably another German club

that's 14 that I would have thought are set in stone. 3 England, 3 Germany, 2 Spain, 2 Italy, 2 France, 1 Portugal, 1 Holland. So for the other 4, apart from the 3 remaining self-entitled English clubs, there is Celtic, Porto, Roma, eastern Europe and Russia, Anderlecht or someone else from Belgium, another Spaniard perhaps, a Greek, a Turk, all fighting for the scraps.

Maybe Spurs, Arsenal and Man U will hand in their PL notice and then get rejected from the Euro League. Then they can start again in tier 10. Oh joy,

Thinking the same regarding this. The novelty effect will wear off. Call me old fashioned, but I think the Champions League should consist of champions, and the only time clubs from Europe play each other is when they win their domestic League.

The days of Man United playing Glasgow Rangers, Man United playing Barcelona. That's what it should be about. The winners of the Premier League taking on the champions of other leagues.

Man City, Spurs, Arsenal, Inter, Napoli, Porto, Lyon, Dortmund etc might argue they "deserve" a place - will be interesting to see the criteria for sure

This hasn't been confirmed as a breakaway league, nor even the format this new 'tournament' will take.

May well be more of a FIFA backed alternative to the planned expanded UEFA Champions League.

Reports 5 English clubs will be invited to the league, Liverpool, United for certain then possibly Chelsea and City to throw money at it, leaves Arsenal and Tottenham fighting over the last spot.

Maybe Spurs - love this - they've won just as many league titles as Burnley.

I'm not bothered about a European League idea, if its the next step in league football, then fair enough - as long as you're team gets there on merit, not bank statements.

But the legal matter will appear that if it is a FIFA backed alternative which results in UEFA losing millions from broadcasting, sponsorships and sporting right deals due to the collapse of Champions League football in favour of this new FIFA league then expect this to be a long drawn out battle for years in courts.

A European league removes the need for the Champions League. As they'll be playing each other anyway. And what happens if one of the so-called top teams finishes 6th in the Prem. It straight away makes the league/competition an even bigger joke.

The clubs in the "European League" wont be in the domestic leagues competing for a place in the Champions League

No way will Barca/Real/Bayern join a stand alone European league. No chance. Why would they? Not with the money and the power they currently have/get.

Maybe teams like Dortmund/Atletico if it’s finically a better option, but those clubs are more traditional than most.

Our top 6 might, but will Arsenal/Spurs? I have my doubts about those 2.

UEFA need to sort out the competitions they currently have. The UCL should be cut down by half the amount of teams, then make it a league then knockout. Everyone playing each other at least twice.

Europa then will have the better teams that are left. It that by half as well. Same type of format as above.

New one. Cup winners, cast offs from the Europa.

A stand alone European League will never happen. And all those thing English football would be more of a level playing field are joking themselves.

So Liverpool and Man U will no longer be in the Prem? I've read it'll be an additional competition, so will run alongside the Prem.

Cant see them playing an additional 34 games on top of a usual domestic season
They already complain of too many games

I agree, but there's no confirmed number of teams. Seems that most teams are still undecided, so it could be a very small league.

But if they want to clear off, then they can off their pop.

Any English club signing up for this should be thrown out of the EUFA & FA competitions. Let them have their cake and choke on it.
As said above somebody has to come bottom and attendances will reflect that, as in every league in the world. Regularly finishing near the bottom will lead to a reduction in fan base eventually.

Being linked with Liverpool's and United's role in the Premier League reform to 18 teams, and the withdrawal of the League Cup, to cut down on their domestic fixtures so they can be involved in this new European League.

The European League have "no short term plans" to remove clubs from their domestic leagues.

"Liverpool and Manchester United are in talks to quit the Premier League and join the biggest clubs in Europe in a new competition starting from 2022.
Financiers are putting together a £4.6bn package to fund it and the league would feature 18 teams, with fixtures being played in midweek during the regular season."

I'm guessing the idea is that they'd play in the Premier league at the weekend and then play in this European league midweek? Don't think it means they'd quit their domestic leagues.

Problem with this midweek games is that the whole point of this league, being backed by Americans, is that they want to get the American and Asian audiences and to do this it will need to be weekend games.

Sky Sport reporting there would be no relegation from or promotion to this new European League for the first 20 years: this means I will more than likely be pushing up the daisies before we could get into it: good luck to them, I hope it goes ahead, I'm getting sick of the so called big six clubs trying to ruin the game with their billionaire backing.

Would be happy for them to go. Imagine if the majority of clubs in the Premier league went into a season feeling that they could realistically qualify for Europe or win a cup. Would be way more interesting.

That wouldn’t happen though. They’ll be other clubs fulling in their places, buying the better players, paying big wages.

The idea the big 6 clear off and suddenly all teams are on a level playing field is fantasy. Unless the league totally restructured and introduced wage caps it’ll be the same as it is now.

Would be happy for them to go. Imagine if the majority of clubs in the Premier league went into a season feeling that they could realistically qualify for Europe or win a cup. Would be way more interesting.
They won’t be going, the Premier League is still the money spinner for them, this would just replace the Champions League. Assuming this is a fixed membership though it will make the Premier League very dull as places 2-6 will now be worthless (or entries into a worthless Europa league lite competition).

Wouldn’t any new comp have to be sanctioned by the FA. If the national FAs don’t agree FIFA will back off. Just imagine if all FAs agreed that any player in this new league wouldn’t be eligible for international selection.

Not sure. If they wanted to leave, I doubt the FA can stop them. They could stop them coming back in though.

Reports 5 English clubs will be invited to the league, Liverpool, United for certain then possibly Chelsea and City to throw money at it, leaves Arsenal and Tottenham fighting over the last spot.
What about Leeds?
