Just posted the same, RIP. Always struck me as a poor man's Little and Large back in the day,but they were hugely popular for a good few years.

Re: Bobby Ball
Sad news indeed, lovely fella.
My daughter delivers papers to his house, and during the first lockdown, he used to leave her a message, or a couple of quid or a bag of sweets, just as a thank you for doing her job. It really meant a lot.
He will be missed by many, he is a big part of our community in Lytham.

R.I.P
I don't think their comedy has aged well but back in the day they were massive.

Re: Bobby Ball
As a boy growing up in the eighties I found Bobby Ball brilliantly funny. I imagine there are scores of people in this message board who did the same.
I was lucky enough to see him in Panto in Bradford and to see him smoking a cigarette down tipside in Todmorden.
Rest in Peace Bobby. You really made me laugh.

Saw Cannon and Ball just before they made it big time, they were the 3rd back up act to the Drifters in the early seventies at Batley Variety club, I remember at the time thinking to myself that they were really going to make it .
RIP Bobby a really funny man.

I saw Cannon and Ball in Blackpool very early 80s. Lenny Henry was the support act and at the time a virtual unknown. I was listening to Moyles on Radio X when he announced the news and he seemed genuinely devastated. Always seemed a decent bloke as well as being a funny guy. RIP Bobby Ball

From what I’ve heard of him that story doesn’t surprise me. I know someone who knew him and he said he was one of the nicest people he’d ever met.MrTopTier wrote: ↑Thu Oct 29, 2020 9:57 amSad news indeed, lovely fella.

Re: Bobby Ball
Saw them back in the day at Blackpool when I was a kid - they were very funny.
Of course time has moved on and left these kind of comedy acts behind but he was still a lot more naturally funny and far better comedy timing than a lot of the newer generation as can be seen in how good he was in Not Going Out.
Even in the last few years I still found him funnier than the likes of Sarah Pascoe and a number of other of them new wave of so called comedians.
(Wow I sound old !!)

Re: Bobby Ball
Both were welders, before they made it big.
A real gent who was so grateful for their success.
Not publicised much (As they were both private men off screen)... and you would never have guessed they were both born again Christians
So hopefully he is now tugging his braces in front of his God.
God bless you Tommy Rock on in peace and thanks.

RIP Bobby, he was a bit before my time but thought he was fairly amusing in Not Going Out.
Also remember seeing him in Tod a couple of times when he lived there.

Re: Bobby Ball
He had a restaurant, mid 80's in Rochdale. It was called Braces. I went to a Christmas meal there and he did a short act mid evening.
More recently saw Cannon and Ball at Burnley Mechanics in the last couple of years. Absolutely hilarious evening.

That will be when I saw them. We were buying tickets at the pier and a passing seagull crapped on my brother. As we were cleaning him up Lenny Henry stopped to chat. My 2 brothers and I all bought red Rock on Tommy braces after the show. Top entertainment.
