Positives from the Brighton game

Post by tiger76 » Mon Nov 09, 2020 2:54 pm

Tough call but I've come up with the following.

1) The return of Ben Mee (this could turn out to be a huge turning point in our season)
2) Clean Sheet (good for Pope and the defence to get back to doing the basics well)
3) Decent away point on the road, and perhaps more importantly we denied a probable relegation rival 2 points.
4) No new injuries or yellow cards (this could be important later in the season)
5) JBG back in the fold, if he can stay fit he could be an important player over the course of the season
6) Fulham, Sheff Utd & West Brom all failed to gain any points this weekend, so we're well in range of safety,
7) We've played a lot of the bigger sides, or in-form teams already and we aren't cast adrift.
8) And the final one I didn't fork out nearly £15 to watch it, plus this match could well be the death knell for the PPV plan.

Agree with all that including number 8. I did record the later showing but haven't bothered to watch it. When you know it's a 0-0 draw and you read some of the comments on here, it leaves you with little incentive to sit and watch it.

And minutes in the legs of Brady, could be a huge player for us this season with McNeil out of form and JBG unable to get on the pitch.

I like your post but I am having trouble with No3.

With empty stadiums, I’m struggling to see the difference between home and away. I honestly don’t think there is such a thing as home advantage at the moment.

You may well be right, it's only once we reach the latter part of the season that we'll be able to form a judgement about whether home advantage has been diluted or not, the evidence isn't conclusive either way yet.

I didn't watch it live but have watched it since, I've seen us play much worse. Not much different to a few of our performances over the last few seasons. A good point for me.

The fact that we didn't lose is a big positive alongside
the other points Tiger raised.
However, looking at our next 10/11 fixtures it's difficult to see
us getting more than 7/8 points unless performances of our midfield and forwards
improves significantly.
Our defence will also need to stay resolute and injury free during those games
and keep the goal difference as low as possible.

And then hopefully the New Year will bring some new faces in who can give us
a better chance of improving and getting some wins on the table.

I agree with onewillieirvine, above, we bossed the game for the first 20mins without decent chances. As usual we played for a 0-0 HT and got it. Second half was poor and we never got going at all. I’d prefer Westy on all corners and not just from the left wing side.

One match apart, Dwight has been horribly out of form.

He has and ideally we'd give him a breather, but our options are limited in the wide areas. This is one of the downsides of a small squad, we don't have the luxury of rotation which the bigger clubs do.

He needs to be told to go back to basics, stay on the by-line, stop coming inside, beat your man and cross it.

Not sure what instructions Dwight is being given. He starts wide left but now seems to be coming into midfield earlier and earlier each game. Whilst he is a very good passer and is shielding the ball a lot better, its very rare we see an assist from him operating in this position. Would rather he went on the pitch with the objective of terrorrising the other teams right back. He did it last year against teams like Liverpool and Spurs and provided a number of assists for Wood and Rodriguez

Its a challenge for the coaches to get the best out of him, then I think the goals and wins will comes

It appears to be a total lack of confidence with Dwight. The post I did on Sunday showed that Lamptey dispossessed him 3 times while dribbling, he only once ended a dribble with a cross and he cleared everybody in the box with that.
Let’s pray that the old adage form is temporary, class is forever comes true soon.
He put a super shift in for the side, no denying that. Whether that was under instruction because of Lampteys attacking threat we’ll never know but he needs to be let off the leash if it was.

Fortunately he wont be playing against the likes of Lampety, James or Trent Arnold every week

Bring glennon in and push taylor forward or 3 cbs with Lowton and Taylor either side.

Hmm! the last time we played 5 at the back it didn't end well, and have you seen Glennon?, and is he up to PL standard? Maybe he is I can't comment because I've not seen the youth teams, but it's a big jump from playing u23 football to lining up in the PL.
