Re: Elvis
Is he still working in the chip shop?
Re: Elvis
That reminds me of a tale. A record company executive is telling a producer of a supergroup he is assembling to get the Xmas number one. He tells him "we've got Keith on guitar".
"Keith Richards from the Stones ?"
"No, Keith Chegwin".
"We've got Phil on drums"
"Phil Collins from Genesis ?"
"No, Phil Tuffnell"
"We've got Noel on rythm guitar "
"Noel Gallagher from Oasis ?"
"No, Noel Edmonds "
"We've got Robbie on vocals "
"Robbie Williams from Take That?"
"Yes, that's right ".

According to this it's Elvis Mitchell, well known film critic and radio show host!

You'll note that Presley doesn't make the top 25!

Re: Elvis
Costello is a songwriter and Presley or should I say Elvis was a performer, so Worlds apart really, but that said it's like trying to compare the Wealdstone Raider to Muhammad Ali.

In reference to the original question. Can't stand Elvis Presley but that's as much down to my Mother saturating us with his music as a kid. She loved him. Costello was actually a talented writer. Can't sing for toffee mind.

Elvis Costello isn't called Elvis either its a stage nameClarets4me wrote: ↑Thu Nov 12, 2020 6:28 pmI think you'll find that the list you refer to contains only those people named Elvis, who are currently alive ....
Born Declan MacManus in London, Costello made the switch to the name we all know after signing his first recording contract. His new name was a two-part suggestion from his manager, borrowing ‘Elvis’ from Elvis Presley (probably a smart move for the time period) and his own father’s stage name of Costello. He had previously been playing early gigs as D.P. Costello as a nod to his dad.

Re: Elvis
Sadly, that footage is taken just 8 weeks before Presley's death .... It's clear he should have been no-where near a stage at that point. It's rumoured that Colonel Parker was under pressure with his own gambling debts, are needed some money quickly, which is why he arranged for CBS to do a " Concert Special " in the June of 1977. As ever, Parker took 50% of Elvis's earnings ....HahaYeah wrote: ↑Thu Nov 12, 2020 6:04 pmCostello is a songwriter and Presley or should I say Elvis was a performer, so Worlds apart really, but that said it's like trying to compare the Wealdstone Raider to Muhammad Ali.

In terms of who's music you like better, it's clearly personal preference. In terms of effect on the music scene and his era, record sales, sell-out Concerts etc, there's only one choice and I think Elvis Costello himself would acknowledge that ...
As did some others, when I saw the thread, it fleetingly crossed my mind that Donald Trump had asked for the FBI files on Elvis Presley, and used his Presidential powers to de-classify them, revealing that Elvis had joined the " witness protection " programme in August 1977, and had spent the rest of his days living quietly near Kalamazoo, Michigan before dying of natural causes in 2013 !!

Re: Elvis
Elvis Presley....... 21 UK number one hits (record)
Mr Costello......... 0 number ones in the Uk.
This would point to a popular vote in favour of the real Elvis.

A huge Country hit for the legendary George Jones in 1970 .... I remember I bought the Elvis Costello Album, " Almost Blue ", ( on Blue Vinyl ), on which this featured. There was a warning label attached, " Caution: This album contains Country Music " !!Steve1956 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 12, 2020 6:57 pmIn my top ten of all time beautiful song

That site says 'they are considered the most important person in history born with the first name of Elvis'.
Actually I tried 'Winston':

Re: Elvis
That’ll be because Presley wasn’t a songwriter. Presley was a singer, a performer. Costello is neither. Yeah he sings, but as was pointed out earlier, not very well.
But yeah, Costello has written some great songs... that’s why I like him.
But just like everyone into football knows exactly who we mean when we talk about United, everyone who listens to music knows who is being talked about when someone other than Costellos mum says Elvis.

So you're only allowed to compare them in specific areas in which Presley is outstanding?
