Bit unsportsmanlike from us we played on with one of their players down in the area and we scored

Perhaps we really were just concentrating on the league. :o

Before my time, amazing how football fortunes can change in a week, we seemed to ride our luck in the QPR game when I am guessing we had none v Wimbledon.

We were either top of the 1st Division, or if not we were very close to it. and they were a non-league club. I think it was something like 55 years since a non-league club had beaten a 1st Division team.

Missed it but I'm assuming it was the 1-0 win in 1974/75 a week after the Wimbledon cup tie.

It took us to 5th in the league and we beat Luton a week later to go 3rd. We got as high as 2nd with eight games to go and I thought we were going to win the league - and then the injuries hit, we only won one of the final ten games of that season and finished 10th.

Just watched it some robust challenges in the game! Was kids running on the pitch at the end a normal occurrence in the 70’s!?

The defeat to Wimbledon and then the one to Lincoln a few years back were obviously the same regarding scoreline and league status but also as the games progressed I remember having that sinking feeling that we weren't going to score. Nothing stands out in my memory from either game as a 'near miss', or 'a sitter'
Edit: and despite some reports to the contrary neither keeper had a lot to do. It was in the next round that Wimbledon keeper, Dickie Guy, made a name for himself v Leeds. Two horrible results that we managed to bounce back from both times.

The four games in six days over Easter didn't help us in 74/5 either😳 The Wimbledon one for me was worse, we were a top side then. I had real hopes of a Wembley appearance with that group of players.

We'd have lost neither of those games with Mike Dean or another strong referee

Those Easter games saw us include Micky Finn in goal, Richard Dixey at centre half and Derrick Parker up front. We were missing so many players we were struggling to get a team out and, with no disrespect, those three were a million miles away from ever being up to playing top flight football.

I take your point,CT, especially the rough house tactics Lincoln used and ' the fat lad' up front but we were obviously so much better than either team but didn't show it on either day.

We were down to the bare bones during the last few weeks, sadly. I think Parker scored though against Derby, to no avail 😳

Wimbledon kicked us senseless and then tried it on with Leeds in the next round. They almost got away with it too, drew the first match and then conceded really late in the replay. You had to be pretty brave or downright stupid to try and kick Leeds off the park. A strong referee would have reduced Lincoln to potentially nine men given the way they played. I know Joey finally reacted but that fat lad should have been nowhere near the pitch by half time.

We had a very small squad of first team players - we already had Docherty and Casper out injured, sold Dobson and then Nulty and finally went into those games at times without Stevenson, Thomson, Rodaway and Fletcher.

No wonder we didn't win many of the last ten! We seemed to have had a fairly decent run of injuries, only Mick Doc and Frank of any length over the previous two or three seasons. Mind you losing Frank was a real disaster the form he was in.

Just after promotion, those performances at Spurs and Wolves were unbelievable, I'd say the day at Wolves was probably his best performance in a Burnley shirt. Three days later and Spurs took him out of the game and then, of course, Leeds came later when he'd got back. Wonderful player.

The Wimbledon game was an absolute nightmare. Obviously we didn't play well, but we did have chances here and there, but simply had no luck and they scored from a long punt by the goalie and some poor defending by us. I think it was all the more galling because after the utter despair of the Newcastle semi at Hillsborough less than 12 months earlier, we'd got an easy draw and looked like we would progress and MAYBE this year go one better! It was simply embarrassing and the media suddenly were all over Wimbledon and the whole country loved it......except for us!! At least they played really well in the next game against another top team in Leeds and took them to a replay and not long after that they achieved league status, so they were definitely no mugs tbh. As an aside, did Alan Cork play against us in that game? He featured heavily for The Dons for many years and of course we all know his son very well!

Before Cork's time there - the only recognisable name, other than the goalkeeper and scorer, really is Dave Bassett. Although there could have been changes, the teams listed on the programme below.

One of which was a 3-2 home win against Spurs, on MotD. I remember that match because there was an article about me moving down to Lancashire because of the Clarets in the Northern Echo that day. They were desperate for stories in the NE! Got a top picture of ColburnClaret and our Martin RIP in the rag.
Later in life Micky Finn was our brewery rep for Lion Brewery.

Thought the same watching it. Wouldn't have got away with that nowadays. Today, the striker would've been looking for the pen before the tackle ! I feel that side of the game had more honesty about it then.

I thought the three Easter games were at Boro(2-0), home to Derby(2-5), and at Carlisle(4-2).
Always believed we 'peaked' that season at home to Liverpool(1-1) where we were magnificent in the first half but only had a Ray Hankin goal to show for it. We tried to 'shut up shop' in the 2nd half but Terry McDermott equalised. Agree with CT that I thought we were on for winning the league, especially a couple of weeks previous when we beat Sheff Utd. at home, 2-0 and then won 3-0 at Coventry the following week.

Look again, Joey: the replay, filmed from behind the goal, shows our defender getting a touch to the ball.

A brilliant tackle, and, as the ref rightly called it, no penalty.

I thought it was a penalty, but how did Rodaway get away with only a “telling off “ for taking their player out. Nowadays you would have Shearer etc calling for a retrospective 3 game ban

It is. I don't know who some of the women are on that picture but the two either side of Fairclough, who was a regular in the directors box with his wife Jean, are May Adamson and Hilda Lord.

I tore all mine up after a defeat at Watford in Division 2, probably 1971-72. I thought we couldn't get any lower. :D

So did I until I saw the aforementioned slow-motion replay.

Rodaway meanwhile certainly was fortunate.

Presume this stopped when the fencing went up. Funny looking back the amount of kids running on the pitch similar to watching old cricket matches!

I picked this up last night on Catch Up - some very interesting challenges in the game. I was on the open end that day and they glossed over the incident involving Alan Stevenson in the end which led to a police enquiry.

Although I was on that end, I couldn't see what had happened right down at the front but the police were called in once the game restarted and I seem to recall there was an investigation afterwards that led to nothing. I seem to recall the QPR fans down there were accusing him of hitting a young lad at the front but, as said, nothing came of it. To be honest, I'd forgotten all about it until I saw the bit the TV showed.

One thing I did notice was Peter Noble wearing the number 3 shirt. I'm sure that's the only time he ever did.

Only from the screening. The ball had gone out for a goalkick and bounced back up towards Stevo. He punched it away, quite firmly, behind the net. Not shown but possibly hit the lad in the crowd.

And you saw that from that footage?

Yes. Time wasting was his intention.

12 January 1975 QPR v Burnley

Post by Ightenclaret » Wed Dec 02, 2020 1:25 pm

My TIVO presented me with a nice surprise - an ITV4 showing of the Big Match with Brian Moore and special guest Gerry Francis.

I wasn’t properly alive when this match took place but it was absolutely fascinating to watch. We had apparently ‘thumped them’ 3-0 at the Turf earlier in the season.

1. Stevenson - 9 - some fantastic saves Heaton and Pope would be proud of. Interesting how he played out from the back more than using the long kick. Great save from Gerry Francis early on and from Masson later. Second half multiple reaction saves from Don Givens. Took some stick from the QPR fans behind the goal last orders, but nothing the police couldn’t sort out.
2. Newton - 7- lithe and agile - tough but not the ‘cropper defender’ you hear about in the old days
3. Noble -9- his work rate was fantastic - his size no hindrance, and was all over the park -reminded me of Mee getting into the opposition box for a cheeky header. Also not afraid of making the long attempt.
4. Ingham 6- seemed a little quiet in this game, went missing in some of the QPR attacks, but made some important tackles on Thomas who looked desperate to win this game for QPR.
5. Thomson 7- made a couple of brutal tackles then claimed his innocence like he was born in Italy. Nearly gave a penalty away in the last minute.
6. Rodaway 7 - dodgy but tough tackle on Givens, but great bravery for a youngster - didn’t even get booked!
7. Morris 7- some great diagonal crosses for Hankin
8. Hankin 7 - worked hard but few opportunities (a la Wood) until the tap in for the goal
9 Fletcher - 9 -great link up with James in the second half and together were the real threat and damage for Burnley. Great header from Collins free kick but denied by a great save from their goalie.
10 Collins -6- (new Captain) seemed nervous in his new role and was a bit anonymous
11 James -9- superb on the wing -made loads of chances -was fouled continuously, but silky feet all game and made the goal easy for Hankin. Great crosses and corners.

Goal was scored whilst one of their players Gillard was down in the penalty box after being cropped by Hankin who would score 40 seconds later.

Man of the match for me- Leighton James

Honourable mention to QPR number 7 Dave Thomas signed for £165K from Burnley - ironically was their best player on the park.

Fair play to Gerry Francis turning up in the studio despite being clearly aggrieved that the game wasn’t stopped when Gillard went down.

Pitch 4/10

Any of you lucky people there on that day?
