Hell of a good goalkeeper who probably suffered international wise because of Peter Shilton being around at the same time.

I know he had a cancer a few years ago from which he recovered but shocked at today's news.

Sad news. Great keeper in a brilliant Liverpool side. Didn't he concede only 16 goals in one season? I met Ray along with a couple of others in St Albans prior to the 2002 World Cup and had my photo taken holding the trophy, of course wearing my Burnley shirt. I had a brief chat and reminded him of the 1983 Milk Cup game at White Hart Lane and how he wasn't sent off for handling the ball outside the area.

Nice bloke who was happy to chat with football fans. 72 years is no age at all. RIP Ray.

This is a real shock. Ray Clemence was a truly great goalkeeper. He could virtually have nothing to do on occasions given the brilliance of the Liverpool defence he played behind, but when called upon, he would pull off a couple of brilliant saves. Great levels of concentration and if not for Shilton he would have won well over 100 caps. RIP Ray Clemence and sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Very good goalkeeper who I think was bought from Scunthorpe just as Kevin Keegan was a few years later. Not sure whether it was seen as being a 'good' problem for any manager to have Shilton and him to choose from. I was at Hampden Park in the 70's when he let in a very soft goal from Kenny Dalglish. RIP to a top professional of his day.

When I was a kid, everyone wanted to be Clemence, not Shilton. I always thought he was the better goalkpeeper, very sad news.

If Shilton hadnt been around Clemence would easily have got a 100 + caps, not sure how many he got but it was a decent amount..RIP Ray .

Even competing with the great Peter Shilton, he managed 61 caps, so that shows how much various England managers rated him throughout his long career.

I've heard this before. And also seen a lot of criticism sent Shiltons way. Although much of that may be down to his later years and personality.

But Shilton surely must have been a top keeper to have amassed 125 caps (still a record) in times we didn't always get to tournaments and had several great keepers to compete with. Clemence. Banks. And latterly Woods and Seaman.

Was Shilton lucky, or was he actually a very good keeper who probably stayed too long?

Shilton was an excellent keeper, although he never seemed to be able to save a penalty, didn't usually get anywhere near them.

If Clemence hadn't been around at the same time Shilton wouldn't have been much short of 200 caps.

He was in goal that night but not sure any goalkeeper would have come close to saving it.

On the penalties I listened to a podcast recently with Dave Beasant. Ironically same podcast that alluded to shiltons character.

Beasant said shiltons tactic was to dive after the penalty was taken. Which meant he almost always went the right way. But leaving it so late means you’ve no chance of getting there. And better to gamble as the odds are better.

On his character Beasant said the only two players who didn’t feature at italia90 were himself and Chris woods. They were due to play half each so they could both get a World Cup cap. But shilton refused to step down as it was his last and 125th game.

The biggest was 1990. When the ball looped over his head.

Then on the penalties he went the right way on all of them I think. But as above his technique meant he go nowhere near.

You have to say we were blessed to have them both at the same time. I doubt there were better goalkeepers anywhere in the world when they were at their peak.

I can't say I blame Shilton for that. 125 games is a milestone.
