Because he's clueless and thinks any kind of win will point to him being on the right lines.

Really can’t be bothered with England theses days. I hope they win, coz if they don’t Gareth won’t be fired off just yet. Still got a couple of years left at least coz of the cosy run to the WC semi. But in all honesty, we need someone else. Clueless yes man.

Re: Southgate out
You can’t blame Southgate for the squad and team selection as I am pretty certain he has no say in it.
The problems lie with the FA.

Re: Southgate out
As Dier's surname reflects how he plays I'm surprised we haven't got any players called Krapp.

I've defended Southgate but picking Pickford tonight ahead of Pope or Henderson just doesn't make any sense.

Be careful what you wish for. The current favourite to replace Southgate is strongly rumoured to be seriously dissatisfied in his current role...

In terms of competitive football he's had two qualifying campaigns and 1 tournament. Our qualifying record is 15 wins out of 18 games topping both groups and he reached the semi-final of the world cup which has only been bettered by one English manager in our entire history

I lost interest in England a long time ago, even the last World Cup “success” didn’t interest me. I enjoyed Wales run in the last Euros more than anything England have done in the last 10+ years.

Re: Southgate out
Can't be JBG, he should have returned home by now, from the BBC feed.
Iceland manager Erik Hamren is stepping down after this match and is without several big names - with Everton's Gylfi Sigurdsson and Burnley midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson among those to return to their clubs early.
Re: Southgate out
Yes, but you got to another semi-finals with a side that were genuinely good and probably would have won the final had they won the shoot out v the Germans.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Wed Nov 18, 2020 7:45 pmReally???

I still believe that the best England world cup side was 1970. Southgate's lot weren't in the best 5 English sqads yet he got them to the semi finals. So he's either lucky or good. The draw for the last 16 suggests more the former.

Terrible decision to book Walker. Not out of control, played the ball with his studs.

Re: Southgate out
I have just turned the fire off and am watching it go out. Much more exciting than watching England v Iceland. I just woke up after the two 'commentators', one who insists on talking about anything but the game, plus the game itself had sent me to sleep......

Re: Southgate out
If you don't find this England performance interesting, exciting.... then you will never be pleased. Neat intricate football, fairly fluid movement, inventive football, and creation of many chances. They can only beat what's in front of them, but their performance in this first half has been excellent.

Re: Southgate out
Decent performance against an average side. Problem GS has is that Rashford, Sterling and Sancho aren’t playing and the first two of them will start when available. Thus meaning two of the midfielders are dropped.

Re: Southgate out
We played Iceland just months before Southgate took over. Take a look at the team, the performance and the result that day and you can see how much he has transformed the England team since taking the job

Re: Southgate out
HT.
While everyone is aware it's against the weakened side of one of Europe's lesser lights, it was a good watch.
Some good movement off the ball for a change.
Just got to enjoy it for what it is.

Re: Southgate out
Good half after a slow start. Committing a lot of men forwards and playing the ball quickly. Amazing how much more positive we can be with players like Grealish and Mount.
Thought we played ourselves needlessly into trouble a couple of times at the back which is fine against the likes of Iceland but will, and was at weekend, be punished by better sides.

I have yet to see anything which justifies all the hype about Sancho. Indeed I cant recall him doing anything special with the ball whenever I have watched him play.huw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Wed Nov 18, 2020 8:30 pmDecent performance against an average side.
