Jay & Vydra deals
Signs a contract extension along with Jay taking them to 2022.
Pleased for Vydra. Gives him longer to prove himself. But he must be frustrated.
Just started to get a good run too when Covid hit.
Hope he can feature more now.

Re: Jay or vydra signing
Both signed extension till summer 2022.
Re: Jay or vydra signing
Didn't think it would be both tbh... Good news
Re: Jay or vydra signing
Aren't the club just activating the 1 year options?
Or have the signed a new contract until 2022, with the extra 1 year option still available?

Re: Jay or vydra signing
Would be interesting to know whether it was the players themselves, or the club, who exercised the options
Pretty sure Jay would have been more than happy to stay for longer but, have to say surprised if Vydra did the same (based on appearances/time on pitch)
We've had the same situation in the recent past where both Hendrick and Brady had contracts extended by the club and not neccessarily themselves

“It’s really good for my family to be settled and to know that we will be here for another year,” said Vydra.
“It’s been a successful time for the club while I’ve been here, playing in Europe and doing well in the Premier League.
“I get on well with all my team-mates here and it’s a good group to be part of.
“I still want to play my part and that’s something I’m aiming to keep doing.”

Really didn't think he would sign with the lack of playing time.
Re: Vydra to stay
Did he sign or was it triggered by the club?

If it’s a triggered extension he has no say in it.yosserhughes wrote: ↑Wed Nov 25, 2020 10:17 amReally didn't think he would sign with the lack of playing time.
Right thing to do either way as we can at least sell him for a tidy sum still if he isn’t going to be involved much. Good news on Jay also.
Re: Jay or vydra signing
Thinking about it, I doubt either would have been so happy with just the offer of an extra year given Westwood was offered a longer contract, to 2023, earlier this season
Re: Vydra to stay
People often overlook personal life in player decisions and look at the football side too much. Always 50/50 if not more on the personal life. He has to look after his family and with lots of loans and moves throughout his career, he’s probably more than enjoying a bit of stability and the opportunity to stay in one place for 4 years.

More than happy to see both of them staying and would have liked to have seen another year on top for both
Just another 10 players to make decisions on by the end of the season

On another note. In the event we do go down, we could do a lot worse than have these two as our first choice front two. Assuming that Wood would leave.

Re: Vydra to stay
Very pleased with this, I was worried that he might not be happy with the amount of game time he is getting, but obviously he's settled here.
I put on the Citeh score prediction thread, that I would start Vyds and Jay on Saturday, just because we need pace against their high line, and Chris isn't quick enough. After the news of both of them extending, I think it's an even better idea.

Given his very good goalscoring record you'd imagine a sizeable number of clubs would be in for him

14 goals last season in a team that’s under the cosh a lot is no mean feat. I would have thought 1 or 2 premiership teams would be interested

Re: Vydra to stay
Surprised to see another year for him. Personally I am not convinced. I appreciate he runs his socks off and gets into great positions, and has been restricted in a number of games, however this is his third season and he has 4 PL goals to show for it. Would love to see his ratio of goal chances v actual goals. He had an extended run post February, and played in the majority of the post lockdown games last season , so has had a more recent run to show his ability. Its no different to Jay Rod, but he took his chances when in and out of the team. For me we are exposed-we have two great strikers in Jay and Wood, and are in serious danger of not having a top notch striker in the wings. Barnes is not the answer, as coaches and defenders now find it easy to take him out of a game, shown repeatedly this season. He is good to bring on with 10-15 minutes to go when you want someone to win you free kicks in the attacking position of play. The way we are set up you need a Josh King type player (maybe on loan in January), who can do what Barnes does but actually find the net more regularly. I hope this move by the club does not restrict us in January. A lot of fans will say that the forwards in the club are our strength, however we will defend very well this season against most clubs and you need strikers who can nick you a goal despite low possession. Thats what gets you the points, and PL survival

Absolutely. Strikers that bag 10+ in the prem per season are not as common as you might think. Many would take him. Suspect a few of the top 6 would welcome him on to their bench tbf.JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Wed Nov 25, 2020 11:08 amGiven his very good goalscoring record you'd imagine a sizeable number of clubs would be in for him

What we need is "service" to our strikers, whether that be from wingers, midfield or wing-backs.

Re: Vydra to stay
All these players will sign extensions knowing rich owners are on their way. Couple of standout games and a big contract could be round the corner for them or pull a tarks and say you want to leave.

Re: Vydra to stay
Chris wood is very much the footballing equivalent of Dyche.
They are great for Burnley but I doubt either them would be of interest to many other premier league clubs. Not down to ability but purely style.
Wood can score goals but his all round contribution is actually pretty poor. His touch is ok but his passing and dribbling is surprisingly poor. Would struggle to get in another prem team.
Newcastle - bench
West Ham - bench
Fulham - bench
West Brom - possibly start but doesn’t really suit there style of play.
Palace - bench
Sheffield United - starts every game
Struggling to find many teams where he gets in

Re: Vydra to stay
I like the player and wish he had far more game time.
But I hope the club has done this to get a £10m transfer fee for him. The club has become very wasteful recently.
Our club needs to at least re-coup monies paid if not make a profit on players.
We can't keep letting players go for free.

I actually agree that his all round game is not as good as others however if he had all round game AND goals he'd probably be at a top 6 premier league side.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 25, 2020 12:49 pmChris wood is very much the footballing equivalent of Dyche.

To suggest he wouldn't start for some of those sides is ridiculous imo, Newcastle's top scorer in the league last year netted 6 goals!
I don't think Callum Wilson or Antonio are better players than Wood and I wouldn't drop Wood for either of them!
An honest question, would you rather have a striker who scores 6-10 goals and looks better, or a striker that nets 10-15 and looks worse?
Re: Jay or vydra signing
Have to say that, after his performances since coming back, Jay could/should have been offered an extra year on top of this deal. Westwood is older yet gets that extra 12 months at the beginning of the season.
Maybe one of the reasons for these new short extensions is just that the Chairman will not commit the club to further financial obligations at this moment in time
This proposed/rumored takeover is now seeming to be having a major impact on the club and Garlick's legacy appears to be diminishing with the passing of every month based on the lack of strengthening within the aging squad and the constant bickering in the corridors of power
10 more players out of contract this summer shows, for me, a lack of long term financial planning. Three of them are youngsters but hard decisions need to be made as to whether they are seen to have a viable future at the club. As to the other seven senior players I would not be that upset if few or none were offered new deals but I'm not sure I have the confidence in our recruitment team to find suitable replacements or even that they were going to be given the financial backing to do so if no takeover happens
Most people thought the PR from last summer's debacle on expiring contracts was bad enough so lets wait to see what happens when this season finishes

Re: Jay or vydra signing
I've got on with him, but its his job to find a move for Matej if that is what they want, they knew the clauses in the contract from when it was signed. Unfortunately for them, the current climate isnt one where there are many suitors willing and able to pay the necessary fee or wages.

Re: Jay or vydra signing
Wood is very much underrated by most on here it seems. Would be a great player for a lot of teams in the prem. his goal scoring ability is excellent. In an attacking team he would score a hatful as he has a shot success rate only bettered by the likes of aguero/Kane.

Me, I'm looking for a 4 bed detached, nice south facing flat back garden. A games room or double garage I can convert would be ideal.
Looking to down size now the kids are getting older.

Re: Jay or vydra signing
I'd assume Jay is more than happy with this, but re Vydra, as his agent seems to be pointing out, I'd suspect he's less so because he still can't see himself getting many more opportunities. IMO it's more about the club ensuring that we can ask for a decent fee if he wants away and we get interest from other clubs next summer.
