Only in England ....
At 5pm tomorrow, the BBC are to show a full re-run of the 1986 W/C Quarter Final between Argentina and England, " In honour of the Argentinian great ", on it's website, app and i-player ....
Apparently, there will be an accompanying text commentary on the BBC Sport website, for us all to " share our thoughts and join the wider conversation " ..... Expect to see a plethora of " This comment was removed because it broke the rules "

Re: Only in England ....
No doubt Argentina's broadcasters will be showing a rerun of the liberation of the Falklands by the UK as a balancing act.

Re: Only in England ....
I read a comment the other day about England’s obsession with the hand ball, you see it on here with the Owen Coyle grudge and I wonder if other nations hold a grudge like the English?
They probably do but when you really think about it, it’s a bit sad isn’t it

Peter Shilton won’t be happy with this.

Is it any wonder when you see how revered the boys of ‘66 are?Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 7:43 amI read a comment the other day about England’s obsession with the hand ball, you see it on here with the Owen Coyle grudge and I wonder if other nations hold a grudge like the English?

These guys were cheated out of a possible World Cup win, on foreign soil. They would have been feted forever.
When you think back to the grief Beckham got in ‘98 I still can’t understand how Terry Fenwick got off so lightly for the hoofed back pass.

You think we're bad .... talk to some Scots about the Act of Union, or a dyed in the wool Ulsterman about the Battle of the Boyne ( 1707 and 1690, respectively )

Re: Only in England ....
Without the handball we would most likely of lost that game and I very much doubt we'd have gone on to beat Belgium and West Germany had we somehow won. We struggled to get of one of the easiest groups in World Cup history and were nowhere near a world cup winning teamhuw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 8:15 amIs it any wonder when you see how revered the boys of ‘66 are?

With regards to Fenwick I think criticism of him would be very harsh seen like it was Hodge who tried to hook the ball back to Shilton for the Handball goal

They should be grateful, the defeat brought down an extremely nasty Military Junta the year after. It's estimated that 15,000 - 30,000 political opponents " disappeared " during the 7 year period they were in charge .....

Re: Only in England ....
England were very poor against Argentina that day in what was a poor game by all accounts. We deserved to get knocked out. It was 34 years ago, let’s move on, eh?huw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 8:15 amIs it any wonder when you see how revered the boys of ‘66 are?

I watched the programme, it was quite entertaining with the players sat around talking about the game retrospectively.
hodge actually swapped shirts with Maradona!
