Dog food.

The best pie pastry in the world is Haffner’s pork pie. The best ‘pub’ pie is Sparrowhawk in Fence steak and ale pie.

Fray Bentos are pleasingly disgusting, the urge and desire then the gorging following by queasy slightly nauseous regret. Not unlike picking up a rough old tart at 3am

The pie has mechanically recovered meat, in other words they power wash the corpse of the animal and the chunks that are blasted of go into pies such as Fray Bentos to bulk up the other meat.
Improvement on the burgers though they used to sell around the Turf from those barrow things..

When we first got married my wife used to serve them up quite regularly pretending to be a pretty good cook, needless to say she was not, is not & often brings back funny memories. I had a guy who worked with me who put 2 in the oven without taking the lid off......... p.s. I do all the cooking & have for the last 20 years.😄😄😄😄

I first encountered these pies when I left home and before I'd learned to cook decently well. Haven't had one for years and I've no inkling to have one now- not even "for old times sake" (not that I dont like pies in general - there are some great pies to be had).

In the late 50s and early 60s they had a very popular corned beef brand before they diverged into pies. It was pretty good- especially made into cb hash and I still like corned beef (and knock out cb hash a few times in winter, though not with this brand nowadays).

When I did Geography at school I was very amused to discover that there was a place called Fray Bentos in Argentina (the port in which the meat processing was done and the ships loaded up with exports).

Used to love them.....even the empty tins had a 101 uses, especially for grilling sausages.
Haven't had one in years though!

Gone are the days when we had two strikers, one good enough for Juventus, the other only good enough for Fray Bentos

Nigella the other night said that The FB pastry is ok in a fan assisted oven. Cooked slowly to get the pastry to rise. It’s just the filling that’s the issue. But Where’s the meat? The much better option is the Haffners Steak and Kidney pound for pound.

My stepson was veggie for about 10 years but suddenly decided to eat meat again...... not for the usual reasons of a bacon sandwich or roast chicken, no, he wanted a Fray Bentos steak pie.......mind you, he was probably safe with the lack of meat in the filling! ;)

I had one a couple of years ago, found at the back of a cupboard.... probably left by the previous owners, (it was next to some peaches in syrup).... never again. I think FB decided thirty years ago that meat was murder and has just been using the leftovers of the last carcass ever since.

My partner takes the p**s out of my stereotypically northern love of pies and bought me one of these a couple of weeks ago...hadn't had one for years but it was basically gravy covered with some fairly nice soggy puff pastry.

Tried a "steak" one other month when Mrs left me to fend for myself for the night, the pastry was crap burnt on top, sticky and stodgy round the sides.
I couldnt remove it from the tin in one piece so ended up a load of slop In a bowl, then it tasted pretty rank.

My first and last try.

And I am the master of pies, and trust me I've had some bad ones, and that was possibly one if the worst.

I occasionally have a "steak" one. i don't know why i do it. I sort of think my mrs is cooking them wrong so I give them another chance, the outcome is always the same.
I'm another who probably had them more often when single.
Also Vesta curries! Beef Curry! Not right is it? ;)

Can you still get Vesta products? Ive not seen them in the places I shop but I dont tend to visit all aisles in the supermarket.

In the mid-late 60s I remember knocking up a few of them, especially Chow Mein, considered the height of adventurous cuisine. I particularly liked the crispy noodles with the Chow Mein, they magically expanded in hot fat in the frying pan. I think the rest was just dry powdery stuff poured into a pan of boiling water and simmered for a while. All before the days of take-aways (excepting fish&chips).
