That penalty.

Post by gandhisflipflop » Mon Dec 21, 2020 7:26 pm

My first reaction to it was benson that was a stupid tackle but when I look at the replay it looks to me that silva leaves his leg and and initiates the contact which for me isn’t a penalty. I’m glad we won because wolves dived and cheated and whinged all game long. What’s everyone else’s thoughts?

standard pl penalty, fall over and get it. I was just amazed Mason didn't give them another one in injury time for something

Put it this way, had it happened up the other end, we'd have all been frothing at the gills if it hadn't been given

Clumsy more than anything. Benson had no need to go within 5 yards of the Wolves lad. Tark wasn’t putting a foot in because of the potential to give away a penalty. Ushered him away from danger and Benson came steaming in. It was just clumsy more than anything. I’d want a penalty if it was the other way, that’s how I try and judge those decisions.

We would have been screaming for a penalty if that had happened to us. Feel a bit sorry for Benson as he clearly hasn’t had a chance to adjust to the pace of the game. Great result though abs we could have had more goals.

Looks a bit like their player just ran into Benson, who was naive with his positioning. Would need to see it back though.

He bought the foul alright, was going nowhere.. but in today's game clear penalty. Naive from Benson when the player wasn't even gonna get a shot away.

What shouldn't have happened is the freekick leading to it. Was a nothing challenge but Mason did what he could to let them get back in it. Right until the corner after time at the end.

Sadly a penalty. Not sure it would have been 10 years ago.

Sadly it's going to get given these days even though I agree with the OP's interpretation of the incident.

If the whole world is interpreting the rules incorrectly then how can you react? You can either scream about it constantly or live with it.

Telling that it was our youngest and most inexperienced player who got reeled in by it. No matter - we still won and Benson can learn from it.

We got the result we deserved but really could have won this by 3 or 4.

Great performance.

But in the cheating, he has a right to go down, there was contact, circus and knobhead world of the Premier League.....

I'm sorry but hanging a leg out or leaving it trailing was part of football way back in 60s, and possibly even before that, as a trip is a free kick. Whether you bought it or played for it or not is irrelevant. Argy bargy rarely got penalised but a foot on foot contact almost always did.

My initial thought was never a penalty, and after watching it over and over again, I still think it’s never really a penalty but I understand why it was given in the modern game. Benson’s mistake is being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Wolves player leaves a trailing leg and is going away from goal, he’s the one who changed direction to make contact.

Of course I’d be screaming for it if it was the other way around, but I would also admit it was never a penalty.

They were after a pen all game, always two, three, four touches in the boxes waiting for contact. Naive from Benson, just hope he gets an arm round him and given a lesson rather than getting a rollicking for it.

I agree with those that say had it had been the other way around I would want it, it’s just frustrating when you see a player blatantly leaving a leg in to ‘win a penalty’ like that. He isn’t the first and won’t be the last to do it.

He was almost at 45 degrees on contact, knew exactly what he was doing whereas Benson was somewhat naive. That kind of play acting goes on in every game now though with nobody showing any intention to get rid of it.

Did Benson make a move towards their player? Because it looked to me like he stood still with his arms in the air and his legs apart and their guy just ran into him and hit the deck. I may be completely wrong as I didn’t really pay much attention to the replay because I was hiding behind my sofa.

Interesting comments from Nuno on the ref, he's clearly not happy, or he's trying to deflect criticism away from him and his team.

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo tells Sky Sports: "We started the game well, had good spells of football.

"Disappointed, we were aware Burnley were strong (at crosses into the box) and could not hold on and be strong enough

"We were able to break the pressure, go out and have spaces, the ball was moving but then it became more difficult and they made it difficult for combinations. It is a tough, tough place. a good reaction but not a perfect game.

"Burnley drop and defended the box but we were not able to created much. We were passing the ball and staying still that is why it was difficult.

"All the players must keep the confidence, there is a long way to go but it was difficult game. The referee did not have the quality for a Premier League game, this is a problem we know we had Lee Mason before. It is not about the crucial mistake or decisions, it is about how he handles the game. The players get nervous, he whistles from the noises from the players. We are talking about the best competition but he does not have the quality to whistle the game.

"I just don't want to see him more, I told him him I hope he does not whistle a game of ours again. He cannot control the players, the players are constantly arguing. The other referees let the game flow."

It's good to see that's it's not only Burnley fans who don't rate Lee Mason as an official.

Classic grealish-type penalty. Push the ball past the defender and then instead of running to where you've kicked the ball, run into the defender and fall over theatrically. Add in a single pike and scream wail and that's a penalty.
Did he have control of the ball? No, as he'd run off at a different angle from it.
Was the defender moving to the contact? I think not in this case. He'd stopped.
So who instigated the collision? The attacker - so the attacker has fouled the defender, who has merely stood his ground. There is no obligation upon him to get out of the way, and the attacker could have reached the ball had he taken a natural angle towards it rather than deviate unnaturally towards the defender.
Usual result in the Premier league: penalty.
Correct result: free kick to defender.

Interesting comments from Nuno, who I think it quite a calm and composed guy. Interesting, because he mentions arguing yet it’s all I saw their players do for 90 minutes. Whinging at the referee about everything. Podence being the worst culprit. I love how opposition can’t handle losing against us.

That shouldn't be a surprise, we've often gobbled up home wins against the likes of Palace and Wolves during our PL tenure, and if we can amass another 4/5 against the other middling sides we'll comfortably survive, these games are our bread and butter, and we enjoy bread and butter. :)

Fully understand those saying "clear penalty in today's game" etc. But should that be a penalty? Forget current interpretation. Do we really want to see penalties for that? He was already on the way down before he made contact with Benson. It is that type of decision and the general a acceptance by a majority that it was a pen that infuriates me about modern football. People have been brainwashed into the nonsense of it all.
