Can anyone name these players (50s or 60s)?

Post by ClaretTony » Thu Jan 07, 2021 6:43 pm

I've been sent this photo and asked if I could name the players signing the autographs but I don't have a clue.

What I do know is the boy second from the left used to post on the message board but sadly passed away a few years ago.

Not him I know, but, ironically, doesn’t the one on the right look like Colin Bell?

Are they definitely Burnley players, CT ??

If pushed I would place the haircuts at 1961-65, they might be away players, perhaps even SV Hamburg or Vfb Stuttgart ?

that makes sense - is the building now the specs place on Kierby walk - they could have been staying at the hotel

I wouldn't rule him out, Colin Bell was only 20 in the 1966-7 season and started every game for City that campaign ...

Don’t think they are Burnley players. I thought Hamburg initially. It’s outside the Keirby.

This is my guess ..... Lothar Schamer and Jurgen Grabowski of Eintracht Frankfurt, so that would make it April 1967 ... 8-)

Edit: Some reasoning ,

1) If " CT " hasn't a clue, then they're highly unlikely to be Burnley players. One, perhaps but not two unrecognised from the 1960's ..

2) I think " Chester Perry " is right when he say's it's outside the " Kierby Hotel ". The London sides traditionally used to get the Train up to Manchester the day before games, stay in Manchester, and then get a Coach over the hills to Burnley on the day of the game.

3) Europeans were then usually a couple of years behind on clothing, haircuts etc which makes the player on the right's hair too modern to be 1961. His mate's still sporting a " DA " style cut. If I'm right, Grabowski with the trendy cut would have been 22, whereas Schamer was 27. Pictures I've seen of Schamer show him with an " Andy Payton/Will Carling " type cleft chin, which the player featured left clearly has ...

Of course, this could all be way off track, and they may be members of " Herman's Hermits " !!

Taking a Poirot type stance, it looks like a wedding ring on the right hand, common on the Continent

How old would your dad have been then? Could it be 1967? If it is the Frankfurt players, I wasn’t so far out suggesting Hamburg.

It’s a cracking photo.

He would have not long turned 13 but like me always was small and looked young for his age. It makes sense that it would be Frankfurt as I still have a Napoli team photo that my Dad said he was given by someone from Napoli outside the hotel so sounds like he was collecting autographs at that time.

The Napoli home tie was 18th January 1967, and the Eintracht game at Turf Moor was 18th April 1967 ... lovely for you to get a reminder of your Dad in this way, from the dates you've given, he seems to have been taken far too soon ....

It was posted on Facebook as Colin Bell training for England at Turf Moor by the Civic trust. Never seen the photograph before so was great to see it. I’m in agreement that it’s Frankfurt and Grabowski and Schamer when you see other photos of them so thanks a lot for that. My Dad passed away from a brain tumour in June 2012 aged 58 and would have been his birthday in 2 days.

Between " Claret Tony ", " Chester Perry ", " JohnMac " and yours truly, we may just have found the cast members for a remake of " New Tricks ", but instead of just Brian Lane ( Alun Armstrong ) wearing his Wimbledon scarf, we would all sport Clarets scarves of varying vintage ! I, of course, would be the ruggedly handsome one who charms the delightful Tamzin Outhwaite into bed ... 8-)

Well done for working it out between you. Someone gave me the Eintracht Frankfurt away leg programme for this tie. It was on newsprint and very fragile. There was an advert for Dr Zhivago on the back. I’ve lost it somewhere. I can’t imagine there are many about, particularly in England.

1967 works as a date. If it’s April it’s just a few weeks after your dad’s sisters wedding and 13 months before a picture of a new born me on your dads knee. He looks this sort of age on that picture.

1967 works as a date. If it’s April it’s just a few weeks after your dad’s sisters wedding and 13 months before a picture of a new born me on your dads knee. He looks this sort of age on that picture.
I'd forgotten you were related to streeterpingfellow Martin, cousins if I'm not mistaken. The aforementioned autograph collector was Mick and used to post on the old board as cblant.

I would never have thought of Eintracht Frankfurt - I'd worked out where the pic was taken, didn't recognise the players and went for Hamburg. Whoever got them, well done.

Schamer and Grabowski it is then. The finest piece of detective work I’ve ever witnessed. Clarets4me to thank.
The other suggestions of Francis Lee, Colin Bell, Colin Todd and, most of all, a young Ray Pointer, were just so absurd, it’s not true.

That’s right. Mick was my mum’s youngest brother.

He would have not long turned 13 but like me always was small and looked young for his age. It makes sense that it would be Frankfurt as I still have a Napoli team photo that my Dad said he was given by someone from Napoli outside the hotel so sounds like he was collecting autographs at that time.

Many many thanks to Edward Walton, of Burnley Civic Trust for the above photograph, which proves beyond any doubt that your Dad and his friends were pictured with two members of the Eintracht Frankfurt team, in April 1967 ....

Further to the above, I messaged the Eintracht Frankfurt official Facebook page more out of hope than anything, and they very kindly replied this morning, ( in English ) putting some names to those pictured .....

That's brilliant and I can add a name to that. The tenth from the left with the bald head is Burnley secretary Albert Maddox.

Thanks, " CT " ... I don't know if there's a way you can get a message to MartinP and Streeterpingfellow, as I don't know if they've seen it. I know " Streeter " was very keen to identify the players, because his late father was on the picture. Eintracht also sent me a current photo of the pennant they received from Burnley FC, which is hung in their Museum ... :D

Sent the text to streeter - just seen the reference to the pennant, that's a fantastic response from them.
