Toothless

Post by Rumbletonk » Sat Jan 16, 2021 5:18 pm

The subject says it all. I'm not player bashing but Wood looks like he's playing with the world on his shoulders and Barnes has zero confidence. Starting the two today was a mistake. If they start together next time out I'll be gutted after their display today. God, we need a lift in the form of new faces in the squad. Hopefully not to just encourage the current toothless front 2 from the touchline. Day ruiner that

The thing is, Vydra won't start for us again, and Jay was apparently not fit to start the game. So it sounds like in SD's mind, a forced move.

Gaby Logan has just said we have only had 5 shots on target in the last 3 premier league games. Wow.

We would surely jump with joy to be described as "toothless". That's very generous.

What do you expect the strikers to do when the service they are getting is absolutely abysmal?

Going forward we’re a one man team, everything goes through McNeil.

3 goals in 17 for Wood
1 in 21 for Barnes
0 in 20 for Vydra
0 in 17 for Rodriguez

So many transfer windows where the club has neglected to strengthen the team has got us to where we are now. Desperate need of quality additions.

I wouldn’t say it’s toothless

As for shots on goal - we play with high balls and crosses into the box, looking forward headers and so on - so that stat is always low

Dyche on striker selection...

“It’s not about loyalty," he said. "It’s about players I think are playing well, players that are active, players doing the job they’re meant to do.”

Fair enough, seems they're following orders and doing their jobs.
Maybe their jobs aren't to score 🤷🏻‍♂️

If Dyche doesn’t fancy Vydra and Jay isn’t fit then he needs to change the formation.

Them two clowns up front aren’t up to it as a pairing at the moment. Just play one of them up top and put another body in midfield to allow the wingers a bit more freedom. They are scared to death to go forward in case they fail to get back for their defensive duties.

At least that way they might get some crosses in for whichever one of the misfiring two gets the starting spot.

It’s not just the strikers, who are dreadful at the moment. The standard of crossing from out side is equally as bad.

Worst team in Dyche"s tenure is this. The best players are Pope, Mee, Tarks and McNeil who are exempt from that comment.

So what's the answer ?
We've tried all the combinations with the 4 strikers ( apart from Vydra having a run of games ) and it's not working. We can't afford to just stick with Wood & Barnes and hope it comes good, games are passing us by. Do we need to sell a couple and buy a couple ?
Or is the problem the supply to the strikers, JBG not the same player, ditto Brady, we've only McNeil who can take a player on. OR is it our lack of a creative midfielder who can pick a pass or get in goal scoring positions.
Over to you SD, you have been promised cash to improve, so we are led to believe.
Can you spend it wisely???????
Ps I need more Red wine.

They are doing their jobs, not well admittedly, but Lewandowski would struggle to score playing up top for Burnley.
Tripps could drop a cross on a sixpence. Dwight in his first 2 seasons could. This season Brady, JBG, Lowton, Brownhill, Westwood, Pieters are lucky if they drop in the right postcode. It's pitiful and inexcusable. Players have hit and miss form, but All our players, All seem to be out of form at the same time. It isn't going to be addressed by dropping Wood and Ash.

It’s all down to our new owners now. Despite what they have said, relegation will not be an option for them. Sean will need to work his magic again, but this time it will be to keep his job.

what do you expect when our main attacking tactic is to lump it long, pick the ball up in the middle of the park, knock it to someone out wide, usually about 30/40 yards out and launch it in the box. If it's the full back it's a long diagonal, if it's the winger about 25 yards out after cutting back inside that goes straight down the CH's neck or overhit to the keeper/goal kick.
How many times did we hear as youngsters that the most dangerous crosses were from the byline; get the winger on the back foot, etc.
Only Dwight does this, the rest are useless.

You can't call Wood and Barnes clowns. They've done a proper job for us. Right now though Dyche has to change it. He has stretched loyalty and belief to the maximum limit

We will soon see if Garlick has sold us a pup with the Yanks. This club is desperate for investment on the playing side, if we don't make a marque signing this window the future does not bode well

time to change formation for me, 4-4-2 isn't working

I'd like to see Jay or Vydra up top with McNeil having a free role so we can try and play some football
Pope
Lowton Mee Tarks Taylor(Pieters)
Brownhill Cork McNeil Westwood Brady
Vydra(Jay)

This season strikers have become an issue. The wingers were already an issue. Right back was an issue. Centre half was becoming an issue.

Brownhill and Pieters the only two out there today in the first XI who weren’t turning out for us 3 years ago. You add to the team so infrequently and this sort of thing is what happens.

Id be very tempted to put Cork in for one of the strikers against Liverpool and go with Jay upfront on his own, let Westwood and Brownhill get more involved in attacks or even let the winger sit more forward, plenty of flexibility with a 4-5-1. But it sounds like Dyche is going to 'stick to his philosophy.'

We've been doing the same thing over and over for the past 8 years though, with a lot of success. We've tweaked things around a little bit at times but we've generally played our way out of poor form by sticking to what we know, and what we're good at.

I suggest you take off the blinkers and watch us try to mix it. We do what you talk about sometimes and other times we try to play the ball to feet but fail to control the final pass ( Vydra today) or take a snap shot that goes wide or has no power or just try to thread the ball to someone incoming who doesn't happen to be there half the time.

We’ve been fielding more or less the same team for 4 years. Brownhill is the only signing in that period who appears guaranteed to start every week and that’s probably only because Cork has missed the last 6 months.

With that approach, it was always going to go stale at some stage. I can’t think of many Prem sides who have tried to stick with the same 10-11 players for so long.

Well it is no longer working and its criminal SD refuses to adapt accordingly. We're playing with the same strikers as 3 years ago and have not tried to improve at all. There's only kane and son and the Liverpool front 3 who have not changed their strike force in that time. It is not working and its dog sh**e to watch

I know it's not working at the minute. My point was that there have been a number of occasions in the past where it also hasn't been working, and we've usually found a way to turn our fortunes by making a couple of tweaks but largely sticking to our principles.

I was commenting on this season basically when Wood & Barnes have played. It isn't sometimes, it's most of the time. After about 70 mins when we've finally realised it isn't working we make a change and usually start to play a bit but generally it's been hoofball.
I agree we played some good football today once all the changes were made and Dwight got us up the field.

The problem is we haven’t improved our starting eleven for 4 seasons.

I know it's not working at the minute. My point was that there have been a number of occasions in the past where it also hasn't been working, and we've usually found a way to turn our fortunes by making a couple of tweaks but largely sticking to our principles.
Sitting and hoping for it to change is beyond ridiculous. SD needs to be proactive and make it change himself. We are boring and predictable and it's not rubbish to watch in addition to us not getting results. I love BFC and SD but I wish I could give him a kick up the backside for his stubbornness.
