100 YEARS AGO Burnley 7, Villa 1
100 YEARS AGO Burnley 7, Villa 1
Five goals for Burnley centre-forward Joe Anderson as the Clarets hammered Villa 7-1 of the 5th of February 1921 in front of 40,000 at Turf Moor.
Anderson repeated his feat of five goals in a game when he scored five goals in the 7-3 rout at Leicester in the FA Cup a month earlier.
Burnley increase their lead at the top of the League to seven points with a game in hand over second place Bolton Wanderers.

Have you noticed that if it was 3 points for a win we would have been 12 points clear which puts into perspective the lead we had.
Can’t get my head around 40,000- virtually half the town - all walking down to the ground

Some rather splendid reporting back in ye olden times too.
Question to ancient people: Did you know it was the olden days when it was happening?

I think Bradford had (Park Avenue) in brackets after their name to differentiate from City, rather than part of it. Often you’d just see Bradford. They had periods where they were the larger of the two clubs.

Can’t see us finishing where we did that season though somehow.

Re crowd the best I've seen in my time following Burnley was 37,500 v Chelsea in a cup replay. Best away was 66,000 at Goodison for a rare Burnley away win there

BPA are my non-league team. I'd love them to get into the National League and Bradford Sh1tty go down. The derby would be renewed.Claretforever wrote: ↑Tue Jan 26, 2021 9:29 pmI think Bradford had (Park Avenue) in brackets after their name to differentiate from City, rather than part of it. Remember the Chelsea replay well as I was there. Also went to the first game the previous Saturday at Stamford Bridge where we drew 2-2 coming back from 2-0 down. I was crammed in the Longside for the reply and though it was a cold and freezing January night but I didn't feel the cold as the Longside was packed.
Ralph scored a cracker in the first half kicking into the Beehole End. He was out on the right wing, cut inside, and released a 25 yarder into Bonetti's top right hand side and into the net. Bonetti was grabbing fresh air. We went into half time 1-0 up but second half Chelsea tightened down on Ralph giving him some shoe and gradually got on top to equalise and send the game into extra time. Chelsea were the better team in extra time and scored two more goals to win the game 3-1. Chelsea were a very good team in those days and went on to win the FA Cup that season beating Leeds in the Final in a replay at Old Trafford.
