Field an FA Cup lineup against City ...
The players looked shattered in the 2nd half .... one shot and not on target in the 90 minutes,
There must be a case for resting most of them against City, with Brighton, Palace and West Brom being the next three League games ...

Hard to disagree
Re: Field an FA Cup lineup against City ...
I'd definetely be tempted to play Stephens and rest Westwood.

Re: Field an FA Cup lineup against City ...
Realistically whoever we field against City we'll lose, so yes we need to be cute here, and if that means resting players for the Brighton game, then that's fine by me, if we lose 3/4-0 on Wednesday, but then win on the Saturday, I'd consider that a good week.

But we have to do all we can to avoid a real hammering. It won't do anybody any good to lose by five like West Brom.

I agree. Chase shadows for 90 minutes, get beat, players shagged out, more injuries possibly, it’s not a great scenario. Plus we want field a decent lineup for the cup, a game we stand a chance of winning.

Well! we've played our 1st choice team in the past few seasons, and still got a hammering, so even if we field our strongest available XI, we'll likely be on the end of a heavy defeat anyway.Conroysleftfoot wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 3:59 pmBut we have to do all we can to avoid a real hammering. And the last thing we need is any more injuries cropping up, ahead of our most important period of the season.

In our last 7 games against City in all competitions, our record is 0-0-7 with a goal count of 1 for & 28 against !!tiger76 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 4:04 pmWell! we've played our 1st choice team in the past few seasons, and still got a hammering, so even if we field our strongest available XI, we'll likely be on the end of a heavy defeat anyway.

But we haven't lost by five at home though. We got beat 4-1 last season but before that the games were a lot closer.
Re: Field an FA Cup lineup against City ...
Tend to agree we should rest a few
for the City game and try and avoid any injuries.
And hope Taylor, Barnes, Wood and Brownhill
are fit for the Brighton game.
We can afford to lose to City but not to Brighton.

Unfortunately due to injuries the team picks itself now.
Re: Field an FA Cup lineup against City ...
According to Chris Boden in his report Ashley Barnes and Charlie Taylor have a chance of returning for the game on Wednesday.

I remember in our first PL season Mick McCarthy (then in charge of Wolves) picking a reserve team against one of the big boys (was it Manchester United?) the game before they played us. He got pelters for it in the media, but it worked, because they beat us with their proper XI.
Given our record against City over the years, I wouldn't be cross at all if he chose to rest a few for this game.

I agree entirely. Give the 'first team' players two days off, prepare and play the reserve/cup team against City on Wednesday in preparation for cup game v Bournemouth, play first team on Saturday v BHA.Clarets4me wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 3:27 pmThe players looked shattered in the 2nd half .... one shot and not on target in the 90 minutes,

Gudmundsson Stephens Benson Brady
Rodriguez Vydra
Substitutes to be used to defend 1-0 lead or to score goals if we need them:
Tarkowski, Mee, Lowton, Pieters, Pope

That exact game game to mind when I was thinking about this. It was Man U that Wolves were playing.

Re: Field an FA Cup lineup against City ...
I believe we should always field our strongest team possible. For the integrity of the competition. The other teams at the top won’t thank us for rolling over against City. Maybe this attitude has filtered down to the dressing room and we start out on Wednesday expecting a drubbing and then are surprised when we get one. I don’t expect any points on Wednesday but I do expect a professional team selection and attempt. All this talk of too many games is also irrelevant. All the other teams are in the same boat. Yeah they may have huge squads (but only 25 who can play), so what, we knuckle down and play on.
Re: Field an FA Cup lineup against City ...
If our lot are still at the stage of being disheartened by losing 5-0 to Man City, they haven't quite developed the "strong jaw" that Sean Dyche keeps mentioning!Conroysleftfoot wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 3:59 pmBut we have to do all we can to avoid a real hammering. I'd say the greater damage in losing by 5 would be to our goal difference.
Genuine case for 4-5-1 with a sitting midfielder (Stephens?)

Re: Field an FA Cup lineup against City ...
Agreed boatshed, Citeh take us to the cleaners down the flanks and somewhat weirdly it's usually Charlie who can't handle Mahrez at all for some reason, no doubt him and Sterling will be in from the start.
Dyche somehow needs to plug the gaps down the sides, something we don't generally do as evidenced by the room Hudson Odoi had today, i know this is something we do as we defend narrow but history tells us it doesn't work against Citeh.
A point would be huge on Wed but i would be encouraged if we can give them a game as they will be champions this season.

Recent City games haven't been a good watch for us.
A bit of judicious shuffling probably wouldn't go amiss in this case.

Re: Field an FA Cup lineup against City ...
If the competition itself had integrity, we wouldn't be seeing the blatant diving and cheating week in week out. The PL would instruct the games rule makers and the rule enforcers to do whatever was necessary to protect the games integrity.
They don't, so obviously they don't care, so why should we care more for the product?
Field the reserves.

Do we rest certain players mid week for Brighton on Saturday ?
The big game is Saturday, if we can beat Brighton be a huge boost and a nice cushion from 3rd bottom and 4th bottom. The Sheff Utd v West Brom mid week is a must win for both be like a cup final !!!!
Would you rest a Mee or Tarks or ??? mid week or full steam ahead ?

Big game for us-they are no push overs, watching them tonight, and seeing how they played v us last game of the season
I think SD will play safe and rest Barnes and Taylor , who hopefully will be fit for Saturday
Personally when Brownhill is fit I would play him right /wide and keep Cork and Westwood central midfield We play Brady there for "creativity" but Brownhill is right footed and I would prefer his grittiness and athleticism to what JBG and Brady offer us

Why....just play our best team and beat City
It wont be the first time we have done it,really is defeatist losing the game before a ball is kicked

I'd rest whichever forwards we will be picking for the Brighton match. Save them completely wasting their time and effort. Just as well play Mumbongo from the off, he's as likely to get a ball to him as anyone else.

I would rest half the team and play 8 at the back and put the rest in midfield.
It's not like we'll get a shot on goal and still lose 5 nill.
Save the players for Brighton, they'll definitely give us a game

Why do that? Just fail to turn up and fulfil the fixture. Then it’s only 3-0, better for our goal difference.

We don't really have enough decent kids to field. Either way I don't think he'll do it. Not after our recent games. He'll have faith in the same group as always.. And you never know, we may get something.

Re: Do we rest certain players mid week for Brighton on Saturday ?
I suppose we should have rested everyone at Anfield as they hadn't lost there for almost 4 years and we'd have no chance of getting something from there so save everyone for Villa at home?
I understand your point of view but every point is vital in this league and we could still easily rest players for the City game and then lose to Brighton. Very few would've expected us to get 6 points from the Liverpool and Villa games but it happened and it's made a big difference to our points total.
I say try to get the most points we can (despite our recent record vs. City!)

Injuries allowing, my side for City would be:

And I'm sure we have had an home draw against them a couple of years ago when JBG scored.
As we have seen in recent weeks, football isn't as simple as "they beat them" so to me we have to play City with as strong of a side as we can put out.

Three years ago that draw, and it came on the back of successive home defeats against Spurs, Liverpool and Man U. And I've just checked, it was on 3rd Feb so exactly three years ago to the day of this season's game.arise_sir_charge wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 9:15 amAnd I'm sure we have had an home draw against them a couple of years ago when JBG scored.

Re: Field an FA Cup lineup against City ...
The narrow defending works against teams that cross the ball in. With that little bit of extra time for us to react.
The likes of City are that much sharper over the first few steps, so short passing when they get in advanced areas is always going to be a problem for us.
I haven't got a clue how to beat City though, you just have to have all the luck in the world on the day.

People come on this message board whining about absolute nonsense 90% of the time. Then along comes a thread to suggest not putting out the best available full strength side we can in a league match.
People whinge the game “gone” for nonsense like players falling over, VAR, wages amongst others. Fans actually wanting for their team not putting out the beat available 11 out does the lot. Nonsense.

Nothing like a fan waving a white flag is there.
I have read comments this morning from yesterday with some basically saying it is a bit unfair "Vyds" being selected against Chelsea as they are a good side and he could have been given a start against a weaker side, these same people were hailing him as our saviour not long ago, now it seems play him only against the weaker sides.

Re: Field an FA Cup lineup against City ...
I seem to recall Mick McCarthy causing a stir among Burnley fans and football fans generally, when he fielded a second string Wolves side against superior opposition saving his first choice players for a 6 pointer against us in the next game. No action taken by the PL because Mick argued he was "utilising the whole of his squad."
Re: Field an FA Cup lineup against City ...
Football in this league has to be run as a business, and in this business the aim is to finish in the highest position as you are able, if that means you have to rest players or sacrifice a game with the aim of achieving better results in the long run then that makes sense to me.
