Ivan Toney
Outrageous numbers for his first season in the Championship. Remember when we were linked with him for under £10mil, dread to think how much he will go for considering they got £30+ for Watkins.

I think its 22 goals and he surely must have been worth a punt at the time he played with Posh on the Turf. He scored then.Milltown1882 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 06, 2021 5:09 pmOutrageous numbers for his first season in the Championship. Forget their players, we need to employ their scouts.

For 5m are you sure?
That's an injured Nahki Wells, or a past it Jon Walters.
We wouldn't be taking a punt on a young lad at that price for a long time

we don't need a scouting network, just wait for Brentford to go in for a forward then nip in and sign him

Re: Ivan Toney
I don't really understand using a player like this as a stick to beat our club with. Since when have we been in a position to be able to afford to sign a player from League One for, say £5m, and loan him out to the Championship to cut his teeth in the hope that he turns out a good'un. Where are the threads about countless other players we could have signed who have not made it?
The main difference between Brentford and ourselves in this case is that they're playing in the Championship, which gives them a much better opportunity to give players from the lower divisions a chance to step up. We have a small budget so any significant signings we make need to be ready to step into our match squad. Maybe that will change moving forwards, as it would be great to be able to take a punt on players like this.

It must be if r*v**s are up to the dizzy heights of 8th !
Re: Ivan Toney
Using it as a stick to beat our club? What are you talking about? Its a sensible discussion about a player who we were linked with who is doing brilliantly in the Championship. We were linked and some, myself included, think he could have been worth a punt given age and wages etc. Why have you typically try to elevate this discussion to a beatng our club level. Its not very clever.Rileybobs wrote: ↑Sat Feb 06, 2021 6:29 pmI don't really understand using a player like this as a stick to beat our club with. Apologies, I was actually sarcastically referring to wellsys post on a previous thread suggesting that la liga was a bad league. I understand how that might have been misunderstood.

It's getting to the point where any player linked with Brentford is worth some scrutiny by others.
No excuses with this one, he would have been known to us.

Didn't Peterborough have a few other high scoring centre forwards at the same time? Can't remember their names but i wonder if any of them went on to better things too?

Plenty missing the point we are in the Premier League, yet what have Brentford done with all these amazing players over the years? What are all these amazing players that have left doing now?

Re: Ivan Toney
Yes obviously Tarkowski, but I’m failing to see where these other players have gone to at our level or above. Gray did well here, but hasn’t done it in this league. Watkins is playing well granted but only half a season in. There’s that guy at West Ham who is doing okay. But people suggesting Brentford's scouts are fantastic and finding gems is nonsense.

N
but I believe the club carries a substantial level of debt.
Re: Ivan Toney
Of course, I wasn’t doubting that. They’ve a good model of bring players in and selling them off.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Sat Feb 06, 2021 9:04 pmNo, I think they do pretty well.

My point was, no player that they’ve sold have gone on to be a good Premier League player over several seasons apart from James Tarkowski.

Long time before this lad. He went to Brighton and scored against us at the Turf.

Re: Ivan Toney
What is impressive is that Brentford were able to identify Ollie Watkins who was a wide player at Exeter City, sign him for circa £1.5m and develop him to become Championship leading scorer before selling him on for £30m+. Replacing him with Ivan Toney who will become this season's leading scorer in the Championship is also impressive.

Re: Ivan Toney
I should think at the time there would have been a meltdown had we signed Watkins from Exeter City or Toney from Peterborough.
We are a Premier League club and as such are only allowed to sign players who have proved themselves at a higher level or come from abroad ready to slot straight into the first team.
That's right, isn't it?

I'm a bit confused too. The same posters who constantly complain about us shopping in the Championship are complaining that we didn't buy a player from League One.JohnMac wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 7:54 amI should think at the time there would have been a meltdown had we signed Watkins from Exeter City or Toney from Peterborough.

You have a point of course but we diid sign Pope and Guddy from then relegated Charlton. Trust in Dyche!!!JohnMac wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 7:54 amI should think at the time there would have been a meltdown had we signed Watkins from Exeter City or Toney from Peterborough.

Toney gets better every time I watch him. Holds it up, feeds team mates, defends and scores.

We’d need to pay upwards of £25 million to land Toney.
