This is a good start.

Re: WSL and Sky sign deal for 3yrs.
It will be tough trying to break into an already saturated market. There is just so much football on television these days that it is hard to see how the women's game will be able to make much of an impact. Perhaps there is a niche marked though.

They're also going to be shown on the BBC I think I heard.
The fact is the woman's game is growing, if sky have struck a deal they can see this as they'll have more info on this than anyone else.

It's a start and WSL operates with a soft wage cap of 40% of turnover.

Not convinced it will work. I just don't think that there is a big enough audience out there to make it financialy viable unless they aren't too bothered about viewing figures and are just doing it to appease those who think womens sport should get better coverage.

I hold absolutely no interest in the ladies' game. It appears to be held by the media at a level which bafflingly suggests everyone is falling over themselves to watch it.
I don't object to it, but there is enough football already for me with our top five divisions that I follow. Good luck to them, but it's overkill or as mentioned above saturation.

Doesn't really interest me, but there are 10 Sky Sports channels so I think there's plenty of room to show women's football for those who do want to watch it.

The women teams shouldn't be attached to the professional clubs. Women's football needs to be its own entity to grow properly.

Maybe they'd be further along if the Men hadn't actively prevented them from playing and shut down their leagues.claptrappers_union wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 11:28 amThe women teams shouldn't be attached to the professional clubs. Women's football needs to be its own entity to grow properly.

I can't imagine the professional clubs would be too keen on that. Far better to have them under their control than deal with the confusion and possible splitting of the market.claptrappers_union wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 11:28 amThe women teams shouldn't be attached to the professional clubs. Re: WSL and Sky sign deal for 3yrs.
12 teams playing each other twice gives 144 games a season. 8m is just £55,555.56 per game. That's pretty cheap content if they get all of them.
It's less than an FA cup first round tie which paid £67,500 this season.
On the flip side there is a lot of kudos to be gained by showing that they're not sexist and probably some benefit for the teams because being on sky gives them a boost when selling sponsorship.
It may be that we are not interested in these events but that doesn't mean that other people aren't. If my daughter was an aspiring footballer I'm sure that I'd show a lot more interest. It's just a matter of time before they build a following and that won't necessarily come from traditional fans of male football.

Re: WSL and Sky sign deal for 3yrs.
Steph Houghton ( no I didn’t know who she was either) was on radio campaigning for the same tv deals as men’s football. Erm it’s just not as popular so why should it get this. No surprise the BBC is keen to show this. People who want to watch it can but there seems to be a ‘you will like women’s football’ movement happening.

Men really do get rattled by even the mention of a woman or women involved with anything.

Saying you are not interested in watching women’s football and saying there is a movement to push this is not the same as saying you hate women being involved in football/sport. Clearly.

Women’s football doesn’t interest me to be honest but as said above, there are plenty of channels so it won’t be hard to avoid for those that want to.
There are a couple of comments here about the media pushing it on us but I don’t think that’s particularly reserved to women’s football.
Over the last few years I’ve noticed Sky pushing all the American sports on us all and they had the Team Sky cycling thing as well which got major coverage on their channels. As always though, it’s up to them what content they offer and up to us if we buy it from them.

The audience matters less for the BBC. Where SKY is concerned, they’ll make their money back and more from advertising - there will be plenty of companies wanting to be associated with the women’s game.Firthy wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 10:39 amNot convinced it will work. Keeping tabs is different to watching the games.
I keep tabs on some results down the leagues got amusement purposes, but I don't watch any of the games down there, I've genuinely got better things to watch.

Re: WSL and Sky sign deal for 3yrs.
Sort of agree with this. Women’s football being, at the top here, Arsenal Ladies, Chelsea Ladies etc, giving the distinct impression that women’s football is hanging onto the coat tails of men’s and to a certain extent that is true because if we suddenly had, say, Birmingham Wildcats or some such nobody would take much notice. The major problem is, as has been pointed out, the market, and that is important especially where money and funding is concerned. We have two problems with this:claptrappers_union wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 11:28 amThe women teams shouldn't be attached to the professional clubs. A. Most men (not all but I would think most) have no interest in the women’s game, not out of sexism or bias but simply because it isn’t of interest, and although it’s a bit of a generalisation most football audiences are overwhelmingly male.
B. Most women (again not all but probably most) have no interest in football (apart from maybe World Cup time).
So there has to a major shift in mindset from men or women (or better still both) to make it work. Otherwise where is the audience?
I’d like to see it take off but in all honesty I think (and I hope I’m wrong) it’s all a bit like flogging a dead horse. I can’t help feeling that the current trend is almost fashionable and may whither away but who knows. From my point of view whilst wishing the idea all the best I have zero interest and I don’t think I’m alone. And I’m not about to start investing my spare time watching it to improve viewing figures.
What the answer is is anyone’s guess.

Re: WSL and Sky sign deal for 3yrs.
Agree with you totally. Too many football snobs think that football starts and ends with the PL or their own club. I love watching lower league football and football in other countries (and not just La Liga or Serie A etc) and have spent many an hour watching Stanley. I’m a Claret first and foremost but have an interest in other clubs and leagues and personally would love to see an end to the falsely based PL snobbery that has some people genuinely believing the ‘best league in the world’ crap. I’m getting to the point where I think some people would not be bothered if anything other than the PL ceased to exist. Personally I’d rather the opposite and that the PL imploded under the weight of its own money and hyper inflated sense of superiority.

Putting it on sky opens WSL to a new base of fans and sponsors.
You say you're happy watching lower league football and leagues from other countries, well there will be people who will watch WSL if its on and there isn't anything else for example.
Some will watch it so they can complain about it like they do with Talksport and the Daily Mail
The money and funding argument is linked to broadcasting, but clubs losing money is a moot point when you look at the losses in men's football.
WSL already has a wage cap in place, a soft one, but it's there which is good.
Abramovich spotted this potential market when he took over Chelsea, other clubs have started doing the same hence why pro women's leagues have been appearing.
It's growing and will continue to do so despite resistance from men who are adamant they're being force fed it, but that's exactly what the likes of Sky have done with men's football since 92, but it's acceptable because it's mens football apparently.
I've seen the argument in the USA about wages between men's and womens teams, but the women's team is currently the best in the world so that's been interesting to see going on.
It would be harder to push over here though tbh.

Re: WSL and Sky sign deal for 3yrs.
Good luck to them but I don’t think they’ll have great viewing figures.
People round here don’t seem too bothered about the Burnley women’s team. You get an odd few on here who like to show their support on a message board about the women’s game needing to grow. That’s about as far as their support seems to go though.
Their crowds up at the Arbories are generally around 100, and half of them are guests of players and the club who don’t actually pay to get in.
Maybe if they do show some women’s games on the tv it may spike a bit more interest but I can’t see it being a great deal of help for those in the lower leagues.

132 games, so £60,606 per game. 12 teams, each has 11 home games.dibraidio wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 11:57 am12 teams playing each other twice gives 144 games a season. 8m is just £55,555.56 per game. That's pretty cheap content if they get all of them.

What I don't get is the supposed 40% wage cap that someone else referred to. Each PL club is supposed to be full time - that's the rule. Suppose a squad of 20 full time players per club, 240 players altogether, 40% of £8m would be £13,333 per player. That's not a full-time wage. Where do they get all the extra money from? Parent clubs, presumably, but that leads to the problem of parent clubs losing money.
Brighton pay £1m+ per year to their women's team, one way or another. If they get relegated, they might and probably will decide that that £1m is better spent on the men. It leads to financial instability in the women's game.

As for Brighton, with the amount of money they lose each year, £1 million is neither here nor there.

It isn’t a moot point regarding the loses in the men’s game. The massive difference is the majority of he men’s teams in debt are in serviceable debt. We are!
Clubs in the lower leagues go into debt as a gamble, hoping to make the big leagues.
That isn’t an option on the women’s game. It’s funded by the men’s game and would go back to being an amateur sport if that funding stopped. No one is going to plow money into a women’s team ever hoping to turn a profit

Less funding from the men's side if they can increase their own revenue streams, which starts with this sky deal.Inchy wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 2:43 pmIt isn’t a moot point regarding the loses in the men’s game. The women's side already has provisions for a wage cap in place which is a big positive.
The debt isn't serviceable on the men's side as shown by the number of clubs going bang, into admin or in Derbys case finding loopholes so they can get round the rules.
That's why they put a wage cap in place in leagues 1 & 2 to help stop it debts growing.
Also let's be honest, it's very very few people who buy a club in the men's side to turn a profit

Best of luck to them.
I doubt it will ever have a large male audience because it really isn't very good.
But if it encourages young women into playing football what's wrong with that, and it will attract a growing female audience, I'm sure.

I've never really understood players being paid to play for your country. I thought it was an honour. I can understand getting expenses but not big payments. In that respect, I have no problem with the women getting the same as the men.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 1:53 pmI've seen the argument in the USA about wages between men's and womens teams, but the women's team is currently the best in the world so that's been interesting to see going on.
It would be harder to push over here though tbh.

It's not just in terms of being paid (I think it may be bonuses rather than straight pay) but also things like how they travel.
There have been a few interviews with Chris Wood about women's football and I seem to remember one where he had to push for the women's team to travel business class to games as the men (and men's U21s) did.
