Chris Cairns

Post by Claretnick » Tue Aug 10, 2021 7:50 pm

I couldn't find a thread but I remember guys saying he was a good pro in the Lancashire League and was obviously a great talent for New Zealand cricket. He looks to be in a bad way ( on life support after aortic dissection), here's hoping he pulls through and recovers.

He had just one season in the Lancashire League for Bacup and had an outstanding season. He got an injury during the last game of the season when they looked set to win the title. They were beaten that day and Burnley came through to win the league. Outstanding cricketer for NZ.

Only 51, can only hope there is some better news soon.

I remember him bowling a delivery during a tremendous spell that completely bamboozled our batter, who ducked, expecting a bouncer, but the ball was just a slow Yorker, right onto the stumps.

Wow. That’s a disguised delivery and a half.

Used to be on the opening credits to They Think It’s All Over. Ruined Chris Read’s England career - real shame because he was an excellent keeper.

Cairns bowled Chris Read at Lords when he ducked a full toss, my only visit to a Lords test.

Speaking off Lords I got a email offering me a ticket for tomorrow. 145 quid they wanted

Grim news.

I remember his father, Lance. A bull of a man.

I thought something had happened to THE Chris Cairns then. Massive Claret and great guy. But not a Kiwi.

All the best for recovery to the Kiwi Chris Cairns

New Zealander, Cairns, was the professional at Bacup CC at the same time as Australian, Ryan Harris, was pro at Lowerhouse CC. They were, therefore, big cricketing rivals.

Their first meeting that season took place at Lanehead. Both players were in fine form with bat and ball.

Cairns came to the wicket to face the speed merchant, Harris. The first ball was defended well by Cairns, the second almost removed his head and the third removed his middle stump to the delight of the visiting supporters.

The return fixture saw both sides in contention for the title. Lowerhouse's hopes ended that day with Cairns smashing 158. Many sixes were launched out of the ground.

His Dad ? Lance, was also a huge hitter and used a bat with the ''shoulders' cut off to allow for more weight at the 'sweet spot'.

More encouraging news to report on Chris Cairns thankfully.

Former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns is off life support and recovering in hospital after emergency surgery in Sydney for a heart problem, his lawyer has confirmed.

Cairns, 51, had been rushed to an intensive care unit at a Sydney hospital after suffering a "major medical event" in Canberra.

"Chris is off life support," lawyer Aaron Lloyd said in a statement.

"He has been able to communicate with his family from hospital in Sydney."

Wish him well for a full recovery.

I’m amazed he’s reached this point given the initial news but it’s brilliant to hear.

He suffered a stroke during the operation and has been left paralysed and faces now a long road to recovery.
