1994 Burnley community team at Wembley
I was talking to the Padiham CC groundsman yesterday and the old barn at the back of the longside cropped up. He told me he was scouted there for the 1994 community team that played in a competition to play at Wembley, semi finals in Birmingham etc..
By coincidence Burnley first team got there as well and they played played an hour before them and winning.
Did anyone watch the game beforehand or remember anything about it?
He reckons there was around 15k in when parading their trophy around the ground.

Re: 1994 Burnley community team at Wembley
We got in early and watched them. They looked very handy.
I think they played in a 5-a-side sized pitch from box to box. I remember asking my Dad why we weren’t playing Stockport in the fans game and him explaining.
If I had to guess at the scoreline it was either 2-1 or 2-0 to the BFC CT but that’s only a best guess.
Can’t recall much else but definitely a good crowd (of Clarets) in the ground.

I do remember a match happening, the only reason being is that there was a player announced as Chris Thompson - who shared the same name my classmate at school.
I was only 10, that’s all I remember of that part of the day and the Burnley team won

He said Burnley were the underdogs and not expected to get through the semis.
He said the kit man forgot his goalkeeping shirt but luckily he had took his own 'lucky' GK shirt.

Is this the game before the play-off final v Stockport in 1994? If so, we all watched the game because a friend of ours from Rawtenstall, Mark Butterworth, was in the Burnley team.

I remember it well. I attended a lot of the club soccer schools during the school holidays and was at the Centre of Excellence and some of the coaches were in the team: John Lister, Dean Ramsdale if I remember correctly.

Re: 1994 Burnley community team at Wembley
I remember it well cos I played. It was called the Endsleigh 6 a side Supporters Challenge.I can't remember if there were some sort of trial but I remember that we played Blackpool in the first round in the old gym and despite going a goal down we won 3-1.I also remember driving down to the Goldstone Ground afterwards to witness a 1-1 draw.
Beating Blackpool meant that we went down to the National Indoor Arena where each of the Endsleigh Leagues had 8 teams split into 2 groups of 4.We beat Hull,Brighton and Swansea to top the group and play at Wembley before the 2nd Division Play off Final.
When it ended up being Burnley v Stockport,it made our day.
I remember walking round outside the stadium before kick off in our Burnley FC she'll suits and bumping into some Stockport fans who thought we were sad to be dressed like that
In the Final we beat Fulham 3-0 with Geoff Holgate scoring a hat trick and will always remember the applause I got when I made a long diagonal pass from my left back position
I also remember the pitch being pretty poor with plenty of bare patches.

Re: 1994 Burnley community team at Wembley
So far we have
Ian Burrows (Bugsy) Gk
Willy
Geoff Holgate
John Lister
Dean Ramsdale
Mark Butterworth
and maybe a Chris Thompson? But he could have played for Fulham.
We might get a Burnley express cutting if CT ever does an article of the day?

Didn't the guy with the white jumper on work for the club?
I'm sure he was the one who used to look after the barn?
Maybe even helped run the indoor cricket league?

Next to keeper on back row is Tony Black. He played a bit for Wigan Athletic I think.

I used to play against half of this team in the 6 a side league Tuesday evenings in the Turf Moor gym. 1994 1st Division Champs and a player of the year award for my good self.

Last time I saw you was at the weekly quiz at The White Lion in Rawtenstall over two years ago now. Your team , I think, was you and your wife. Our team was myself, my brother and my wife.markbutts wrote: ↑Sun Sep 05, 2021 6:31 pmhttp://www.uptheclarets.com/messageboar ... w&id=21665

I’ve mis-remembered it then. I recall some pre match entertainment with the lineups being announced with a Chris Thompson in there somewhere.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sun Sep 05, 2021 6:35 pmSo far we have

The reason why that memory is so vivid is because when I went to school, it was the first thing my friend asked - if I heard Chris’ name over the tannoy.
I thought it was strange thing start talking about considering we’d won promotion at Wembley Stadium

Hi Joey
Yes its me posting as markbutts
I have the match programme for the Play Off final at home somewhere. Think they put a page in on the Supporters Challenge with our picture in. They might have listed all of our names as well..

He did indeed - good friends with his son (in fact on a train from London with him now) and played with him a few times myself. Good guy. Also Simon Clarke. Another good lad, Remember simon playing as he did the kids coaching at the time down the club (with John Lister and Dean Ramsdale, Bob among others)

Re: 1994 Burnley community team at Wembley
Simon ended up running the designer shop in town.
It was this season where i missed the first half of the season as was in hospital as a young kid for three months until Christmas.
Spent my birthday in there and was meant to have my birthday at the club in the barn funnily enough. And simon arranged for the players (who were my heroes at that time - even more so at the end of the year) to come and visit me on my birthday in hospital.

Another weird coincidence, I have Les Thompsons suit jacket from that game actually got in touch with the club yesterday to see if they would be interested in taking it for any of their memorabilia displays. Can’t see me donning it to work!

Tony Black played in the local Saturday league then moved to Burnley United in the West Lancs league. From there went to Bamber Bridge. Got injured playing for Wigan and retired from pro football but had spells with Stanley and the old Leigh RMI
