Faced with a tsunami if you were swimming

I've seen videos of cold water Japanese town tsunami and the only option for surviving is to run and get to higher ground if you can.


I go cycling and i look at woods and imagine them as tsunamis coming towards me.

I would swim towards a tsunami if I were in the water and one was coming.

I would sit down in a safe vantage point, open a bottle and watch you do it.

It's possibly the best option, because properly out at sea you'd probably be safe. But unless you're a mile out already, then by the time you know it's coming, if you don't have time to get out of the water, it'll be too late for swimming towards it to make much difference.

The shape of a wave is just that, a wave, half of it above and half below the surface. When the wave hits land there is no space for the half under the water so the wave becomes smaller and all the water that can't stay within the wave form becomes white and slips off the top like an avalanche. This water will slide over the remaining wave towards land taking anything on the surface with it. You would need to be swimming under the water to not be carried away by the white water. Even if you got down into the wave it would still push you towards land but you would be under the white water and probably drown anyway.

You'd need to be far enough out to sea in deep enough water so that the wave hadn't broken by the time it got to you for you to have any chance of getting behind the wave.

I’d totally jump on my board and ride that crest until I reached dry land, then pop open a cold one. I can totally see why some people might panic and do something irrational though.
