Canal empty at Accy/Rishton

Post by Quickenthetempo » Thu Oct 14, 2021 12:00 pm

Just seen a picture of the canal over at Accy/Rishton where it had a leak.

Looks quite a bad one with a big stretch totally empty. Anyone local, know if there's any damage done with all that water escaping?

Apparently..and fortunately.. the majority of the water has flowed into Hyndburn Brook.

There is a lot of work being done on the Accrington side of the canal bridge at Hapton to fix the leak… looking at the amount of money and kit being thrown at it one can only assume the emptying of the canal was managed not natural in order for them to get to the problem.

Some more details there, sounds like a lucky escape. 40 mile stretch empty apparently!?

Theres no real damage apart from to the canal bank. The breach is near the Hyndburn Brook river so all the water has run straight into there. Lucky really. Although the fish might disagree....

There's water in the canal at the High Street bridge in Rishton.

I just went for a look on my bike, but only got to the bridge above Altham industrial estate where they have shut the towpath off.
They have built a temporary bridge out of scaffolding to pump concrete accross to the other side.
There was water in but a couple of feet lower than normal all the way back to Gannow tunnel.

Unfortunately all the litter is now on show that has been dumped in it. Especially at the west side of the gannow tunnel.

There was 2 trolleys dumped in next to the entrance of the tunnel. Kids must love riding down the ramp in them then dumping them in the water.

The bank gave way between bridge 109 and 110. A culvert under the canal gave way sand the bank burst. Fish rescue team did save a lot. Environment agency monitoring the streams and river hubs urn. Canal obviously responsibility of canal and rivers trust. Coffee dams in place and water from Rishton red topping up canal but a lot of water required.

So are they topping the canal up now or draining it completely to complete works.

Entirely possible they will leave it be, then in a couple of months dam it, drain it then clean it out…. :?

I hope it's fixed and filled before the City game so the Accy Clarets can have their pre journey wash 😁,

An essential first step in the development of Den Perry’s transport hub at the culvert….. the Monaco style Marina and helipads will be here before you know it.

A friend of mine has a Narrowboat on the LL canal. A big problem is the CRT have lost the plot with their priorities. They have millions on improvements to the tow paths to benefit people who pay nothing towards the Canals. They have done this to the detriment of the canal itself as they got rid of dredging boats etc and have not been doing preventative maintenance. Add to this it was decided to let the sides of the canal to silt up to benefit invertebrates and other wildlife.
A month or so ago a wall collapsed in a lock at Gargrave with CRT saying it would be next year before the canal was going to be open, my friend is now stuck on the other side of Gargrave and normally winters in and around Burnley, buts that not happening this year.
Add to that a barge with materials Fix Gargrave lock was the other side of the breach and now cannot get materials there to fix the lock.

Add to that the 4 main reservoirs used to fill the Canal are very empty, Foulridge lower is at 40% capacity, upper is higher but it’s smaller. Not sure about whitemoor and slipper hill. But they are both smaller as well.
People I have spoken to think it might be Easter next year before the Canal is navigable again, that might be an over estimate but it will certainly not be open till next year.

The majority of the barges moored up face the towpath I don’t see how not improving the towpath won’t benefit people who reside on the canal, surely towpath improvements benefits everybody including the anglers as well, it’s more likely the barge people & anglers will be the 1s lugging shopping/fishing apparatus, I understand the argument mums pushing prams & cyclists don’t contribute will also benefit, it’s not something you can select & exclude everybody will benefit because that’s the main walkway you can’t get around it any other way.

Is it so hard to keep both canal and footpath up to a decent standard?

Where does the money come from? Tax payers or mooring fees etc..?

A combination you can donate to the CRT, mooring fees will bring the most revenue.

CRT charge boats by length, but your looking at around £1000 per year just to have your boat in the Canal. Then if you have a permanent mooring somewhere that’s going to cost you around £1500 per year . The person who owns the mooring then pays large fees to CRT.
I believe they did get some grants for putting towards the towpaths, so that would be tax payers.

I suppose the point is that if it becomes un navigable the boats will go elsewhere and then both the Canal and the towpaths will go into disrepair.

People live aboard their boats all year round, they need to be able to get about to get to services to empty the toilet, fill with diesel and get coal and gas etc. Lots of them don’t own cars and tend to do it as a method of cheap living because they don’t have the money to live say in a house.

Not an easy task. The Leeds - Liverpool canal is 127 miles long. Even with the best maintenance in the world
, it's inevitable that unforseen damage/breaches of the banking may occur at any time/place.
