Your first ever record
Your first ever record
Just watching BBC4 and “You Really Got Me” by the Kinks was being played which was the first ever single I owned released in 1964 when I was 10 years old and bought for me by my grandma for 4s - 3d. I played it on my older brother’s and sister’s record player (their joint Xmas present) every chance I got until it was practically worn out.
What was your first record?

Blockbuster by Sweet was the first record I ever bought..at the Almaine shop at the top of Windy Bank ,Colne.
Whilst I subsequently bought some tosh I can genuinely say that the first album/LP I bought was The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from mars...still a favourite to this day nearly 50 years on.

Re: Your first ever record
Love will tear us apart again was the first single that I ever bought.
"first record" is tougher as I think I was probably on quite a few performing before I ever bought one.
The first record I remember getting out and deliberately playing was gryphon (by gryphon), something that had been sort of left as a gift by the band's manager /producer. I acquired it again on cd only last year.

First single I remember in the house was bought by my Dad - Sugar Sugar
First I bought - Eye Level
Second - Ball Room Blitz. Strange how fast your musical tastes change at that age!
First LP - Tubular Bells
First EP - Free; All Right Now (A Side), Wishing Well and My Brother Jake (B Side). Sadly our dog ate it

Cassette tapes was the first medium I owned, and all my tapes were made for me by my mum…. All fifties and sixties, but heavily overloaded by Elvis who I still love to this day.
I think the pleasure principal by Gary numan was the first album I bought myself. Single I can’t really remember but could possibly have been rat trap by the boomtown rats.

“Oliver’s Army” by Elvis Costello and the Attractions. As an 11 year old had no idea what it was about but was utterly hooked by the piano line at the intro and the melody. Still sends shivers up my spine if I hear it now.

1956 - my first single was Blueberry Hill by Fats Domino.
I didn't have a record player so kept it, unplayed, in a bedroom drawer until Christmas that year when Father Christmas brought me what I had asked for - a brilliant 10-record player.

Re: Your first ever record
Not sure on single, I had Bay City Rollers singles as a child but don't recall them being bought. First album, like Bobinho, was The Pleasure Principle by Gary Numan. Shortly followed by Replicas by Tubeway Army and then Telekon, again by Numan. Still have them in the cupboard along with most of the vinyl I bought back then.

They always remind me of currant picking in Icklesham. One of the other pickers must have been a bit of a fan.Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Sat Oct 30, 2021 6:45 amFirst album, like Bobinho, was The Pleasure Principle by Gary Numan. Tiger feet by Mud
Re: Your first ever record
It was actually a cassette, but the first music I chose and bought with my own money was the Frankie goes to Hollywood album Welcome to the Pleasuredome.

"Back Home" by the England World Cup Squad 1970 (I know, I'm cringing here!) But I do believe my second record was "Lola" by the Kinks, so it did get better!
Re: Your first ever record
Some great records being posted on here, they certainly bring back the memories for sure. Mine was Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys, it was 1966, I was 12 years old.

Re: Your first ever record
"She loves you" by the Beatles played on a new Bush record player I was bought for Christmas. It was one of those that folded up like a suitcase and would most likely be worth a fortune now.
First EP was "Twist and Shout" by the Beatles.
First LP was something by Mantovani, because my Mum liked his music It was alright TBH but not cool

I had an older brother, too, so like you I would sneak in the other room when he was out to play them. Think the first one I bought was You'll never walk alone by Gerry and the Pacemakers. There's a great playlist on here already.Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Sat Oct 30, 2021 8:22 amThat was my older brother's first record and I never stopped playing it on the sly when he was out!
