Wow, that brings back some memories. We were all still at junior school in Haslingden when a good friend invited us to his 9th birthday. After the party at his house his mum.and dad paid for us all to go to the local cinema to.watch a film called 'The Parent Trap ( first house 6.15) starring Hayley Mills where this song featured. Thanks for that, alf resco. Fantastic memories again of a great era.

The first piece of music I bought was Fairport Convention's Liege and Lief, in cassette format in 1970.

When I first got enough money to buy some sort of music player, when I started work in 1970, I decided to go down the cassette route. It was relatively new at the time but turned out to be pretty limiting as most music was still issued on record. That Fairport Convention cassette came in the usual plastic case but attached to a piece of pink (because it was on Island Records) cardboard on which the information was placed - one of the disadvantages of cassettes compared to albums was the lack of space for lyrics and the like. For other bands I liked, like Bread or Matthews Southern Comfort, I had to send to the US (a mail order company called Godzilla which I found in one of the music papers) to buy cassettes as they weren't available in the UK. Other bands I liked such as Barclay James Harvest, were simply not available on cassette anywhere.

Therefore around 1972 I succumbed to the inevitable and bought a turntable. I went mad and bought four albums in one go - the first three Barclay James Harvest ones and Southern Comfort's first album. These all had to be ordered at my local record shop as they were not popular enough to be stocked. After that it was records all the way, including replacing what cassettes I had, until well into the CD era where I came in late, and only when my music was no longer available on vinyl.

I remember giving my older brother a contribution (about 4bob I think it was) to buy two vinyl 78s, Hound Dog by somebody called Elvis and Stupid Cupid by Connie Francis. The first 45 rpm I bought was Bad Boy by Marty Wild, I remember being surprised how small the record was compared to 78s. This was followed by Running Bear, Big Bad John, Cathys Clown, Three Steps To Heaven and many, many more. Great days and some great music.

my loveley lovely brother by terry scott in 1963 i was 4 t the time, had it in my collection of records until I was 14 and my Mother ran a coffe morning for Cancer relief when as the song says who put salt in the sugar bowel (said record was broken over my head, I guesss today she would be in trouble for not explaing to me the possible repucusions of doing so for peoplewhi had intloerence to salt , but at the time it did the same job never did it again.

This thread really highlights the age demographic of this forum doesn't it.

I genuinely can't remember precisely what my 1st record purchased was, but one of the first ones I do remember buying was Sleeping Satellite by Tasmin Archer.

Most of my early music was on cassettes bought from the famous Barras Market, and for those who know that particular place it won't come as a surprise to discover they were pirate copies, this was in the pre-internet days don't forget.

Mr Custer and Little White Bull always remind me of Sunday lunchtimes and 'Two Way Family Favourites' on the radio. 'My brother' by Terry Scott always seemed to be on Saturday morning radio just before the Brian Matthew programme. Brilliant thread and as someone already said it gives a pretty good indication of the ages of board members.

Another one for "She Loves You" bought for my 9th birthday. My sister and I plus a couple of friends used to cover our tennis rackets with paper and draw frets and strings on them and play "guitar" and mime to the pop songs of the day - inviting other children from the neighbourhood with a 3d admission including orange squash and homemade Anzac biscuits - money went to the Mayor of Nelson's charity.

Happy days - never played a wrong note !!!!

Just looked it up…1973. Which means I was getting a bus all the way downtown by myself and spending my 40p on a single in Boots or Woolies before probably going to Benns to look at Subbuteo teams at age 10. Madness these days.

We'd had some old shellac 78s in out house but 45s were just coming in when I was old enough to buy my own singles (a couple of years before I could cough up enough for an LP).
First one I bought was "Tell Laura I Love Her"- Ricky Vallance version. A very soppy song but appealing to a 10 year old- especially as it got banned by the BBC. I still remember all the lyrics (as I can with all the first records I bought and listened to endlessly).

First UK No.1 by a Welshman I believe and pretty much a "one hit wonder".

My first record, along with a record player bought one Christmas was Ernie the fastest milkman in the west,
but the first single that I went shopping for was chirpy chirpy cheep cheep by Middle of the road - I was in love with the lead singer

There was a programme from 1960 showed on Talking Pictures called Twist or Stick which had a few clips of Shane Fenton and the Fentones - Alvin Stardust!

Her name was Sally Carr and its very understandable

In about 1960 I went with my parents to see Tommy Steele on stage. And when he was singing Little White Bull he stopped singing the song title and let all of us young kiddies shout out Little White Bull

There was something about Del… Runaway was a massive favourite of mine aged around 10/11, and I loved Flirt too. There were loads around that period I was hooked on - here comes summer (Jerry Keller), poetry in motion (Johnny Tillotson) and Johnny remember me (John Leyton). There was also a certain I Count The Tears, by the Drifters, which I still have, and class it as the first record I owned ( I didn’t have any of the above)
