Through Burnley FC Supporters Groups we introduced the annual in memoriam in January each year. We were told several times that the club preferred this idea but could not stop people having pics put up on the big screen.
Wasn’t there a game about three years ago when we had five in one game?
I think standing in silence to remember everyone before one game each season is appropriate. I don’t think what happened yesterday was.
Don't know what your thoughts are Tony but on that day I've always thought it would be quite a nice idea for our players to actually turn towards the screen,or screens now whilst huddled at the centre circle instead of with their backs to it.
I just think it shows respect to the people who've passed from the claret family and would be a nice touch.
I did email the club with the suggestion and didn't even get a response telling me to get lost

Quite right CT on Taylor's passing and Cork with the goal given by line tech in April 2018. Watford have done a number of minute applauses for Taylor on the 72nd minute. Our son was there that day and says they were applauding as Cork scored. I promise you will hear it on the highlights clear as day
I don’t recall it but the goal was given by goal line technology. Can’t think why they did anything that day.

please show some respect. I'm sure if it was your family up there you would be disgusted with someone staring this topic.
I wouldn't... All feel the same, and are under strict instructions not to do anything like that for me

Maybe it needs changing, I don't know, but I'm not sure whether it is such a good idea to discuss this the day after the match. The grief will still be very raw for the bereaved.

There’s never really a great time to discuss it unfortunately because there’s multiple minutes of applause every game. I think that people should be allowed to respectfully air their views about this though, which is all they have done.

Where or when did the club or anyone for that matter request for the fans to applaud for one minute when a post goes up on the big screen?

Don't think the club do request the applause, it's all done on social media.

So if they club don’t request it, and it isn’t asked for on the posts that are being placed on the screens, what’s the problem?

I don’t think it’s a problem as such, but some fans feel obliged to applaud and this includes away fans. Some people just think it’s inappropriate to have multiple messages and therefore minutes of applause during each match.

If people feel it’s inappropriate the only option would be for the club to ban it. Because they are not saying anyone must clap or for that matter, acknowledge it.

Yes, I think many people want it stopping and other methods to be used instead.

I think the term banning is a bit OTT, but I personally feel that the club should politely refuse any requests to display such messages during the game and offer to add the name to the annual in memoriam, which I think is a nice touch.

Same here. Unless there's a chance or a bad foul, or poor decision. Or anything else during the game that warrants some shouting.

Refuse, ban call it what you like as it’s gives the same end result.
If someone wants to pay a tribute to their deceased loved one on a screen at a club they loved so much, then good for them.
Having been in the position where I considered doing it for my Dad who was a season ticket holder for 50 years, but chose not too, I’m glad I didn’t as I wouldn’t have wanted to annoy so many of our fellow fans.

Good for them indeed. Good also for the people who would rather not see those messages on the big screen accompanied by 60 seconds of clapping multiple times per game.

As I said above, I would tell the department in charge to politely refuse any requests to display such messages during the game and offer to add the name to the annual in memoriam.

Why would any true fan of the club want to potentially affect their teams performance?
Much is said of the fans being the twelfth man but that is totally lost during those minutes applause

Must admit I am not one for these minutes applause during the game ... they are very distracting, but I can understand people wanting them, just not my cup of tea ...
I am however hoping to get my Brothers name on the "In memoriam" list (assuming we have one next January) which to me is a far better way of remembering those we have lost in the previous year.

A lot of sheep just join the clapping without knowing what they are clapping for.
By the 3rd or 4th yesterday it was embarrassing

Yeah, the first generally is what it is. By the time the third one came around I was cringing a little thinking what do the Palace fans think of this, I hope they don’t mention it on Sky Sports etc if they come to the ground at that point.

If there are perhaps 25,000 lifelong fans, we can expect about 250 of them to die in 12 months. That's 13 per match.

I think the once a season approach is the best solution. The only exception for me would be a particularly young fan where it's particularly shocking etc. I think yesterday we had a 66 and 87 (?) year old? It may sound callous, but that's a good innings in my book! You end up clapping along because you feel you have to.

I've had response from the club re: the annual in memoriam. I'll pass on info as it becomes available but hopefully Leicester in mid-January.

I go to the turf to watch a football match and occasionally slag Dyche off for his dinosaur tactics.
I don't go to stand distracted from the match whilst people clap for a minute for a "true claret" who I have never met. Just because you support the same team doesn't mean I respect you - this message board is proof of that.
Remember also that this is not a free service, the club charge, far better to doing something for the community with the money as a legacy.
Psotto will be soon to decry the use of digital media to remind man of his mortality and the celebration of death by the surviving kin being a validation of love or a catharsis of hope reaffirmed by the passing of a heretic spouse.

Not sure following anything Psotto says will do you any good.
As for the discussion... Once a year, before a specific game, for those individuals and families who want their beloveds name in lights is the best solution

I fail to see just what harm it does. If you want to clap then clap, if you don't then fine, just watch the games. If you don't want to read the onscreen message then just watch the game. Also, not sure that it's correct to give the impression that this happens multiple times every game??

It certainly happens far too often. The 'in memoriam' thing is far more appropriate and sensible.

It doesn’t do any harm per se, I just don’t think it’s appropriate. I am entitled to have that opinion without being overly affected by it. And it does happen multiple times every game.

Whether it happens multiple times per match isn't really relevant. It happens multiple times per season which is still too much (IMHO).
I don't clap to any of them these days. They have no relevance to the match experience. It's a distraction to those that aren't interested and, as evidenced at the weekend, it's a distraction to the players.
When this results in a goal against us that could potentially relegate us, I suspect some of those being applauded will be turning in their graves.

It would be inappropriate to turn up to a funeral and sing football songs for a minute, because people go to a funeral to mourn the dead. I don’t go to football to mourn death, I go for escapism. It’s nonsensical.

You clearly weren't watching the game 40 seconds into the first round of applause. Too busy blowing kisses at the big screen and videoing the scene?

Went to a funeral at Burnley Cemetery a couple of years ago where there was a rousing singing of No Nay Never No More.

Read this thread through for the blowing kisses, etc story.
I know it was about 40 seconds in because I looked up at the screen to see how long was left..... Before I discovered there was another minute to go!
