Brennan Johnson
No link or rumour at all but this is the type of player we should be snapping up right now.
20 Years old. Son of an ex Player. Plays for Wales. Creative winger/forward. Scored 5 goals this seasons for a mid table team needing some cash.

Moving to Southampton for 20m rules us out straight away.
A few posters including myself highlighted him when he was at Lincoln last season.

We dont seem to have a clue about scouting in the lower divisions. Even Laws was able to get Dean Marney and Ross Wallace for peanuts and they really made an impact and paid us back. What would you give now for Dean's engine and Ross's left foot

Re: Brennan Johnson
Reports say that 14m would do. If that's what it will take then its a no brainier.
Roberts and Johnson on the right hand side could be the making of Burnley and Wales for the next 5 years.

Re: Brennan Johnson
Type of player we should've been in for before the season started after his loan spell at Lincoln. We missed the boat
Re: Brennan Johnson
Fair enough but I agree that we should be better at snapping up younger talent before they make that move up to the Championship. Watkins, Johnson, Toney etc.

Him and Lewis-Potter are the types. It’s been said on here multiple times.

We miss the boat with a lot of these. Presumably it’s because Dyche won’t play them in the PL, doesn’t trust youth at this level, he’d rather have the tried and trusted pros like Lennon.

Re: Brennan Johnson
If that’s the case we are not missing any boats.
The one we did miss was Tarkowski from Oldham, beaten to it by Brentford.
Re: Brennan Johnson
but he was still relatively inexpensive to buy, Brennan Johnsons price has probably quadrupled since the season began, same story with Toney/Watkins.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Jan 09, 2022 6:28 pmIf that’s the case we are not missing any boats.

How many players have been highlighted on this board just in the last two years that are now playing premier league football.
Bowen, Toney, Johnson, potter just a few examples of the top of my head.
I’m sure there are reasons we didn’t go after them but we still missed out on players that would have improved us.

Re: Brennan Johnson
Looks exactly what we need. A quick, direct right winger!
Re: Brennan Johnson
I'm not sure Brennan Johnson is an example of a lower league player we should have snapped up. He was only on loan at Lincoln and because he was doing so well, Forest were hardly going to sell him for peanuts.
There are many other examples of lower league players we should have been taking punts on over the last few years, though. Just off the top of my head I can think of James Hill who we were linked with who's just gone to Bournemouth, Joe Gelhardt who went to Leeds from Wigan for about a million. We've been complaining for years that we can't compete with other PL clubs and even top Championship clubs, yet we've not been prepared to take these punts on younger players.
Our pitiful recruitment has been well documented and we're now left with this ageing squad with nothing underneath the seniors.

Re: Brennan Johnson
Whether or not these sorts of players (bought before their move to the Championship) are an option now, I don’t know. Historically though, Dyche has probably been restricted by finances.
He may well want these sorts of players, but if he has had to prioritise players who he has more confidence will be first team ready, I can see why we may not have been in at the earlier / cheaper stage.
There is of course an argument that we’ve actually wasted a fair bit on players who have not, for one reason or another, affected the first team as much as might have been hoped (Stephens, Lennon, Crouch etc.)
I’d hoped that ALK may be looking at players that we can get reasonably cheaply and then turn a profit on - the jury is still out on that front and indeed the first team ready transfer front.

Only one to blame fir recruitment is the manager - will not go for youth or play them

Bardsley and Pieters - those unknown lower league gems.

I remember when we were linked with Ollie Watkins. We signed Jon Walters instead.
SD wanted Ashley Young or Marc Albrighton this summer didn’t he ? Until, presumably, the powers that be were forced to consider Cornet. A foreign player ? Under 30, you say ?
It’ll be the same next summer. I’m sure, left to his own devices, SD will also want to extend the contracts of some of the current creaky knees. Ash !

True, but like most Dyche signings, he'd had previous encounters with most of them. Either he's worked with them, or they had played against us recently. This list is no different. We rarely go finding unknown talent in the lower leaguesClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Jan 09, 2022 6:19 pmPope

Re: Brennan Johnson
TBF Bardsley and Pieters aren't examples I'd use to criticise our transfer strategy, Crouch, Walters and Wells are much better examples, and have definitely offered less than both Bardsley and Pieters, who've been solid squad signings at worst, and came relatively cheap in comparison.
Where we need to be smarter is snapping up these rough diamonds before they come to prominence and are then going for extortionate amounts.
Ands serious questions have to asked of both the scouts, but also the manager for not trusting in youth, it's not the impending relegation that unduly bothers me, that was always likely to happen at some stage, but it's the amount of deadwood we've been left with on high wages, and with little or zero sell-on value that worries me the most.

We are hardly renowned for giving chances or playing young exciting players.
They'd need to "learn the framework" for 12 months, get all their raw talent sucked out of them, and end up sitting on the bench, in the under 23s before being released or sold for a pittance.

Re: Brennan Johnson
In fairness, how many other Premier League teams have made consistent signings from the lower divisions? Looking around I can't see too many relying on that as a model for staying up. It's always nice to bring on young talent but the reality is that the Premier League is a very difficult place to give someone a go in the hope it works out. Particularly in a team like ours which will always be up against it.

Perhaps just say that some parts of the media are suggesting he might cost up to £20m instead of "Moving to Southampton for 20m"?

Did we not bid for Bowen but he chose West Ham who had a similar bid in for him? Bowen was a Hull City player and Lewis Potter is often mentioned on here , a Hull City player too, he's looks a good player and played well against Everton on Saturday last. Scores quite often , as well.

Missed the boat on Olise, Eze, Bowen, etc too.
We can’t buy everyone.
If we are going to spend 15m on a player and go looks ok in the championship and good in league 1, then I’d prefer a look to Europe for another cornet bargain at the same price.
