"The fans who held openly misogynistic attitudes towards women's sport saw it as inferior to men's sport, particularly in relation to football"
saying it is inferior is correct. Crowds of under 1000 in the top division of the women's game proves it isn't as popular as people wish to believe.

Re: Misogyny rife of football messageboards
Women's football is not as good as men's football. This is self evident.
It doesn't detract from the spectacle, but it does mean it's not as good. Just as I'd prefer to watch an average Premier League game compared to an average Conference level game, I prefer to watch men's football to women's football.
Women's football has a completely different dynamic and I very much enjoy it. But it would be interesting to know if the above would be considered "misogynistic" by the compilers of this latest study.

Determining just what is and is not misogynistic is going to be so very important when the law changes to include it as a hate crime. In order not to breach equality legislation misandrism (women hating men) will have to be the same. By definition feminists are misandrists. Add into that transgender people and it's going to be a minefield sorting out who's said what and it's status when someone complains about someone else saying something. The legal eagles will have a field day.

Was the survey shared on here originally? The study, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), is published in the academic journal Sociology and was led by Durham University with researchers at the University of Leicester and University of South Australia.
It surveyed 1,950 male football fans who responded to a call for participants on 150 UK online forums.

Re: Misogyny rife of football messageboards
Misogynist - a person who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against women.
I think womens "football" is crap personally. However I certainly don't dislike or despise women nor am I strongly prejudiced against them. I am a huge fan of my wife and my two daughters, I don't always agree with what they think, believe or even do but that's just the way life is.
One of the issues of modern life here in that if we dislike something and say so there's a group somewhere who will see some kind of offence and accuse us of being some kind of "ist".

- The fans who held openly misogynistic attitudes towards women's sport saw it as inferior to men's sport, particularly in relation to football.
In football it is, thats a fact. But for the sake of my opinion, League Two and Conference League football is better quality than WSL... but you're not allowed to say it with being called out on it.
- There was also extreme hostility towards increasing media coverage of women's sport, which was seen as "positive discrimination" or "PC nonsense".
It is, Sky are actually 'polishing a turd' when it come to women's football. They are hypocrites too. They could do a whole show on Sky Sports News or on Monday Night Football analysing the downfall of Dele Alli, the defensive decisions of Harry Maguire or a has-been manager like José Mourinho. They wouldn't dare give the same coverage about a professional female in the women's game.

Re: Misogyny rife of football messageboards
Hardly news. Just looking at this board, it is indeed rife with misogyny. Mostly from some very fragile male egos.
Re: Misogyny rife of football messageboards
Funny women’s football, it must be one of the rare sports that constantly gets compared to the male equivalent. When everyone was lauding Raducanu there weren’t many saying, ‘Yes but she’s no Andy Murray is she?’
Re: Misogyny rife of football messageboards
Womens football is crap because they have smaller feet - which on a lighter note enables them to get closer to the cooker.

This game to me demonstrates the level of women’s football.
I don’t watch it, I did try once, but it has no interest due to the level played.
I also turn off when women are pundits, I just find I end up disagreeing with what they are saying.
The article is probably reporting on opinions like mine, but I don’t dislike women at all.
I mentored several apprentice girls who became excellent engineers.
Surely it’s my freedom of choice who I watch or listen to.

Although the quality is lacking somewhat compared to the men’s professional game, having watched a little women’s football, is it also fair to say they play the game with more honour and integrity than the men’s professional game?
That for me is refreshing to see, and I think it improves the watch. Will it go the same way as the men’s game? Undoubtedly, if and when the money turns up.

Re: Misogyny rife of football messageboards
The gulf in class between your chosen sports and participants doesn’t add anything to your point I’m afraid. Murray would probably beat Raducanu, but she’d take games without a doubt. I think she’d lose but it wouldn’t be as clear cut as Man City men beating Man City women. The girls would lose by at least 20 goals (maybe considerably more) and wouldn’t score against the men at all. All hypothetical of course but it’s what I believe we would see.
There are of course sports that women and men should be able to compete at on a level playing field. Darts and snooker to name but two, but there will be more obviously.

Brazil woman’s national side played an under 16 lads team of a pro club. They lost 6-0. Under 16’s lads will beat a national side, it’s just how it is.

Sorry lowbank I didn’t. Have now.
We should be free to watch what we want without risk of being singled out or shamed, unless of course the reason you choose not to watch something is for no other reason than there are females involved. Surely we are past all that aren’t we?
I currently mentor some fabricating apprentices. One of them is a girl. She is absolutely fantastic, wish I had more like her.

Re: Misogyny rife of football messageboards
I suppose it just comes down to the quality. The quality of what we watch is important to us. That’s why I watch MotoGP bike racing ahead of the sv650 cup. That’s why I watch the PDC ahead of the BDO. That’s why I watch the world snooker championship instead of my brother knocking in a 17 break down the club.
Football is my main sport. As I mentioned earlier, women’s football has only one advantage over the men’s professional game. Less cheating.

Re: Misogyny rife of football messageboards
Murray would certainly beat Raducanu, and if it wasn't 6-0 6-0 I'd fall over backwards. He hits the ball too hard and covers too much ground. Someone suggested a few years back that Serena Williams should play Djokovic and she laughed at the idea. She said she wouldn't win a game.bobinho wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 5:29 pmThe gulf in class between your chosen sports and participants doesn’t add anything to your point I’m afraid. Not wishing to watch women's football isn't misogyny by the way, that's not what the report is saying.
But rather the way women are talked about - often on here and among football fans more generally - it makes you think this board's users are 90% spotty virgins or divorced dads blaming women for everything. For what it's worth, I don't watch much women's football, which it is possible to do without crying about every article or highlights package you happen to see.

To add some balance from myself.
I did watch Fallon Sherrock in the darts the other year. I thought she played brilliantly. I do think there are sports where gender does not matter. Darts being one.
Hopefully more women take up Darts and get to her level.

I love this:
Co-author John Williams, from the University of Leicester, said: "The increase in media coverage of women's sport on both the BBC and subscription channels was openly supported by some men.
"But it also clearly represents, for others, a visible threat - an attack on football as an arena for 'doing' masculinity."
Or in other words, footy blokes feeling as though their safe space is being invaded. Bit snowflakey, that, if you ask me.
It's not as though a dislike of women's football is in-and-of-itself misogynistic, it's the hostile nonsense that often accompanies that expressed dislike which is misogynistic (look at the side-splitting cooking and cleaning jokes on this thread). Saying you don't like women's football is about as uncontroversial as saying you don't like haggis, but if that sincere dislike of haggis becomes the inspiration, the springboard for some unhinged anti-Scot diatribe then there's a bigger issue here than the taste of haggis.

Re: Misogyny rife of football messageboards
Just because I don’t watch women’s football outside of the international tournaments doesn’t make me misogynistic, I don’t watch it because it’s generally poor to watch.
With regards Commentators you can criticise female ones if you think there tone doesn’t suit the game but I will also have a moan at male ones as well.
Talent will come through, I find Emma Hayes an excellent pundit, Claire Balding an excellent presenter and in Horse Racing more and more female jockeys are breaking through.

Re: Misogyny rife of football messageboards
The study didn't find that a dislike of women's football was misogynistic. It found that footy messageboards can be sexist as fk. Nobody needs to defend themslelves by saying 'disliking women's football isn't misogynistic,' because nobody is making that accusation.

Discrimination and/or persecution, be they on the basis of gender, age, race, religion, sexual preference, politics or anything else has no place in this world...
Except for the Welsh, I do accept to there being a special exception for the Welsh; oh and Leeds, Wolves and Rovers fans too. but that's more 'fair comment' than discrimination.

They need to define what a misogynistic attitude to women’s sport actually is. I do think some women’s sport is inferior to men’s so by saying that they are labelling me as a misogynist.

Re: Misogyny rife of football messageboards
No, there's a bit of a misunderstanding there. If you look again at the sentence you've quoted, that exact sentence does not assert that a dislike for women's football is misogynistic. The sentence proposes that in those who express misogynistic views, their expressed dislike of women's football is predicated on their sexism. There's a sharp distinction between those two things which can seem blurred with an unclear reading of the sentence you've quoted.Dy1geo wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 7:32 pmThe line I got out of it was

Re: Misogyny rife of football messageboards
Actually let me add to that. I do actually agree with you that a clearer definition of what 'misogynistic attitudes towards women's sport' means would be helpful, but it seems from the article reporting on the study (which doesn't seem to be linked to in the SSN article) that it in no way argues that a dislike of women's sport = misogyny.

They always had a horse in trading with mr Berry.
Me and her best mate hubby went for a game of golf as the girls went for a horse ride.
My missus appeared near the golf course the horse was bucking and getting really wound up. Not being a horsey person I was like WTF. Now Patrick he’d known her from when she was young lass and he told she was doing it on purpose to wind up the horse.
She was on a horse and hope I spell it correct, Rubinka, think she came 2nd in a 1.4 furlong race, but had a good pedigree.
There was a mile long field which she turned the horse into and then she let it go.
In that first half mile I saw it was her adrenaline rush, as motorbikes were mine.
Could she have been a jockey, well light enough and crazy for speed on a horse. Plus she certainly understood horses.
Patrick won several pure Arab races, so knew his horses.

Re: Misogyny rife of football messageboards
It's clear as day on here when Emma Hayes, Chelsea's WSL manager, is added to the conversation about available jobs in men's footballSpiral wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 7:23 pmThe study didn't find that a dislike of women's football was misogynistic. It found that footy messageboards can be sexist as fk. Nobody needs to defend themslelves by saying 'disliking women's football isn't misogynistic,' because nobody is making that accusation.

That's why women's tennis is more fun to watch - as long as you don't get one that makes that artificial moaning noise all the time.dsr wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 6:03 pmMurray would certainly beat Raducanu, and if it wasn't 6-0 6-0 I'd fall over backwards. He hits the ball too hard and covers too much ground. Someone suggested a few years back that Serena Williams should play Djokovic and she laughed at the idea. She said she wouldn't win a game.
When it turns into "who can serve the hardest" it's lost pretty much the only thing that almost stops it from being a bore fest.
Re: Misogyny rife of football messageboards
There are a lot of clubs I'd happily see her manage. It's her voice that grates. It's got nothing to do with her being a woman. The man in the cinch adverts taking about mo-uhs is just as badGodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 8:01 pmIt's clear as day on here when Emma Hayes, Chelsea's WSL manager, is added to the conversation about available jobs in men's football
