Sometimes you read a news article and just shake your head. What gave the game away? The smell, the rigid nature of the claimant ? 10 out 10 for trying though.

The scam was a dead give away. Firstly, the Irish don't have a stiff upper lip and secondly, they shouldn't have given contact details as c/o heaven.

They'd have got away with it if they said he was a Burnley first steamer.

Sadly it doesn't appear that the most arresting detail, propping up a corpse, a la 'Weekend at Bernies', is true.

The vast majority of society would be shocked to find out how widespread the cashing of pensions after a relative has died is among certain sections of society.

It was one of the most common frauds when I worked at the old DWP but one which was easy to recoup owing to the fact that Death Certificates are very definitive in terms of proof.

Instances of penalizing those who committed this fraud were virtually non-existant. We'd simply trot out how they "probably weren't thinking right" owing to their bereavement and recoup the loss at 21 pence per week (from existing benefits) to be paid over the course of the next 43 years or similar.

I seem to remember that for many years it was believed that Japan had the highest number of centenarians in the world, until their pensions office did a bit of checking and found that about a third of them were not actually breathing and existed only in the sense that their relatives were still collecting their pension. Though presumably not in person. Not over several years.
