Single Men - A Question

Post by Terry Cochrane » Wed May 04, 2022 8:22 am

How often do you wash your bedsheets?

According to Radio 5 Live who have been discussing it this morning - on average a single bloke changes his bedsheets once every 4 months! Dirty buggers.

Every two weeks I change and wash my bedsheets, towels etc.
Usually on a Friday and I have a reminder set on my phone because I'd forget otherwise

The sheet and pillow cases gets done weekly, usually.
The duvet cover gets done monthly at best because its a **** to put on, and you can turn it over.

Had i lived alone probably only ever the night before I thought I had a promise on

I aim for once a week but likely to be closer to the 2nd week when I'm busy.

I have to confess this is much more to do with an horrific dust mite allergy than a vigorous hygiene regime.

Yeah, replacing a duvet cover on a double-bed duvet is a b****** for a single chap. It's one of those occasions when I almost think its worthwhile getting married again just to have somebody to help with the job.
Re the OP's question: I play it by ear (or nose rather). When you climb into bed and it doesnt smell so fresh- time for changing, probably c each 10 days but more often in summer and a bit less often in winter. Weather comes into it, I do nowadays have a spare set but I like to get my favoured set back on same day so I prefer a fine/drying day when I can hang the bedding out + also air the pillows/duvet outside. (I have a tumble dryer but much prefer to dry things outside if I can- cheaper too).

I change towels weekly, I have loads of towels so there's no hassle just throwing towels in the wash basket and getting fresh from the airing cupboard.

I use the cherry stones method. This year, next year, sometime, never. Sometimes I need to add a cherry or two to get the right result.

Done yesterday, and maybe it gets to two weeks sometimes rather than a week but that bloody duvet cover. Totally agree, it's a pain to put on.

What's the issue with the duvet cover?
I just turn it inside out, put my arms inside to the corners that are going on the duvet first, grab duvet and then shake the cover into place.
It takes mins to do

I used to be terrible for this, however switched everything to 100% cotton and been fine since. Might be worth a try if you've not already, as the stuff with polyester cotton mix doesn't seem to let the moisture out as easily.

Evidently, the pillows are the thing to watch.

Up to 1/3 of the weight can be bed bugs! :o

When I was a student, I would wait until they were grubby, then turn them the other way around. Very economical way of going about things.

Putting on a Duvet Cover is easy ... but don't go down the Pub wearing it unless you want strange looks from your friends 🤭

Try the 'burrito' method to change the duvet covers. Plenty of YouTube videos about. Works well.
