A few beers in Halifax...

Post by Mala591 » Sun May 29, 2022 2:08 pm

It’s a strange town Halifax, some great buildings/architecture and interesting streets but seems to be overrun with traffic and (just outside the town centre) weeds growing everywhere and too many derelict buildings.

These are the real ale pubs we tried on Friday:

The Three Pigeons - probably the best real ale pub in Halifax. Good atmosphere and lots of choice of excellent real ale.

The Railway - good beer garden (plenty of sunshine) out the back of the pub. Reasonable choice of real ale but very expensive (£4.50 a pint).

The Upper George - ok pub with choice of 4 real ales. The outside sitting area seems to be in shadow all day? Nothing to get too excited about.

The Grayston Unity - my favourite on the day. Small pub but has a great atmosphere and lots of interesting music wall art posters. Excellent choice of real ale.

Which other good ones (real ale pubs) did we miss?

Halifax was a fairly rundown, but this last decade it has seen a bit of a revival. The town also has a thriving local music scene. The Piece Hall is a great venue to see bands and one-day festivals. Loads of small independent shops too.

The Three Pigeons is where West Yorkshire Clarets always have their pre Christmas meeting, so good it is.

£4.50 expensive?? Have you been to a pub recently?

I had the pleasure of paying almost £8 for a pint in clitheroe last weekend.

Mala, Halifax is a cracking day out and it seems you've had a good day out, but here's some cracking Real Pubs and bars for you to try next time. Kobenhavn, Meandering Bear, Dukes, Victoria Craft Beer Bar, The Square Chapel.
The Victoria Craft Beer Bar is a stunning pub with about 10 handpulled ales on and would certainly match the 3 Pigeons for choice. If you like a walk, go up the hill towards The massive Wainhouse Tower that looks over Halifax and seek out the Big 6 pub and The Wainhouse Tavern.

 I thought the same. I'd consider anything under £6 cheap in Leeds.

I don't know about pubs, but Cliffe Cafe was ace in 1972. I used to work for the York County Savings Bank in Skipton but had to go to Halifax for a week.

Best thing about supporting burnley is coming into town on a Saturday and rejoicing at the price of fine real ales.
Got some Chelsea fans a lift to the rifles once and they couldn’t believe the prices so much so they insisted on paying for every round just do they could tell their mates in London

Up here in the northern wastelands, I flinch at anything over £5.00 for a draught pulled pint, unless it's a hotel bar or restaurant. I reckon the London average is still around £5.50.

Almost £8 for a pint in Clitheroe? I'd have told them to GTF, and I don't care if the ale was described as a craft beer, made from the finest hops gathered once a year from the summit of Everest by barefooted yetis.

I paid £6 for a third of a pint a couple of weeks ago. It was a 14% imperial stout. It was excellent, and most folk wouldn't think twice about paying that for a glass of wine.

It's not like you're going to be tanking pints of it down.

I'd agree with the Victorian Craft Beer Cafe, definitely worth a visit for the interior and a load of cask ales. The refurbed arts centre has a nice bar as well with quite a few beers on and is very convenient for a last pint before getting the train

The Square Chapel. (Just at the entrance to the Piece Hall).

Has anyone been in the Big Six in Halifax? Big Six Inn, Halifax

It looks to be a proper, old-fashioned mid-terrace boozer.

The Big 6 is my local.

We nearly lost it last year as the previous occupants had to move on due to ill health. Luckily one of the barmaids has taken it on so it has not changed at all.

Can't think of another pub like it in the country being a mid terrace on a little residential street. You would struggle to find it if you did not know where to look and I would be surprised if it has ever managed to get any random passing trade.

Eight quid? That must have been craft beer surely?
