Steve Wright in the Afternoon
Has announced he will be handing over the slot to someone else (Scott Mills i believe)
Been on the radio since forever really, and he was a `must listen to` in the early days on R1, but to be honest the show is tired and more than a little juvenile so it's not before time really.
Sara Cox gets an extra hour, so that's good as she's a great presenter i think.
I was hoping big Vern would get the gig, but it's not to be. Anyway, good luck Scott.

Re: Steve Wright in the Afternoon
I don't listen to the radio much at all these days. It's Spotify and sometimes Talk Radio for a laugh.
But my only gripe with her is that she tended to only play music she liked. She didn't play what she thought other people liked.

Re: Steve Wright in the Afternoon
He’s marmite with many and I don’t listen to him now but I also used to with my mum on the way home from school/ college etc
For me though, the one thing I loved the most, was his famous jingle… I found this video online several years ago and I’ve listened to it loads since. Having grown up in orchestras and the like, I love seeing how things like this are put together. The French horn line is just awesome!
Enjoy…

Steve Wright back in the day was the must listen to show, but I haven't listened to Radio 1 or Radio 2 for donkey's years now.

Mark and Lard were the best.

Agree it’s got a bit tired. Scot Mills, can’t do with him I’m afraid so I’ll find something else to listen to. I too was hoping Vernon might get the slot, he’s great on the radio, prefer him to Zoe Ball when he covers for her.

Re: Steve Wright in the Afternoon
I stopped listening to R2 quite a while ago. I'm a convert to Greatest Hits Radio, which seems to be R2esque from the 80's.
Have to say though it's getting harder to tollerate the nonsense ADs.

Re: Steve Wright in the Afternoon
Used to love R2 when Mark and Lard were on.
As I get older I drop down a station....Radio 12 I'm listening to at the moment or Smooth if I'm in that kind of mood.

Re: Steve Wright in the Afternoon
Steve Wright is basically doing the same show now as he did in the 80s and it is a tired format. Saying that, listeners will leave in droves when Scott Mills takes over. He is dreadful, I listen to Popmaster on my drive home each day and when he sits in for Ken Bruce it is a painful listen.

Used to like Steve Wright but he’s become incredibly irritating. Glad he’s off so I don’t have to listen to him singing through songs.

Re: Steve Wright in the Afternoon
No more talking over the end of a tune and no more crap singing at the end of a tune?
I'm heartbroken.
Bobbie can come and live with me though, if she's struggling.

Re: Steve Wright in the Afternoon
Does this mean, with a bit of luck, Scott mills will stop presenting on 5 live on a weekend morning?
Re: Steve Wright in the Afternoon
Vanessa feltz in the morning and Sarah cox in the afternoon both very good imo best out there.
Re: Steve Wright in the Afternoon
Yup another vote for Mark and Lard.
I think Steve Wright did 'factoids '? Incredibly boring

Re: Steve Wright in the Afternoon
I’m sorry that Steve’s show is ending. He and Ken Bruce know and understand their audience and their remit, and consistently deliver an entertaining show.
Scott Mills, who like a previous poster I’ve heard only when tuning in for Popmaster when Ken Bruce is away, is dire. If he were any more wooden he’d have woodworm.
Thanks for the entertainment, Steve.
Personally, I tend to listen to Boom Radio more and more these days.

Amazing how many say hes boring, past the sell by date AND to arrive at these conclusions must listen to Steve Wright. Some odd sods.

I used to like Simon Bates Sad Stories, he used to read out a letter from a listener.

Re: Steve Wright in the Afternoon
Simon Bates’ read out stories were “Our Tune”, weren’t they? The fact that Steve Wright is leaving is another”I couldn’t care less moment” for me, the guy must be 150 years old now, but the BBC will carry on paying massive salaries to people like this, I expect Gary Lineker to take over.

radio 2 has been slowly morphing into radio 1 mk2 for some years now and this is another death knell for the station.

Can't abide listening to Sara Cox.
Jo Whiley is the only one with any kind of musical knowledge. You know, what dj's used to have.

I agree a lot with this. As I said before, Sara Cox just didn't relate to her listeners. She would always play music because of what she wanted to listen to.dougcollins wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 8:44 pmCan't abide listening to Sara Cox.

Re: Steve Wright in the Afternoon
The radio in my office sometimes gets turned over to R2 for ten minutes to listen to Pop Master. That’s a decent feature to be fair, but I’ve had more than enough of Ken Bruce by the end of the ten minutes.Middle-agedClaret wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 8:14 pmI’m sorry that Steve’s show is ending. Re: Steve Wright in the Afternoon
as for mark & lard; in the late 90's they were on radio one when i was working for renault in swindon. the output then was tantamount to mental torture. it wasn't so bad when they were talking but the repetitive nature of the music was unbearable. 'sweet like chocolate' and 'tender' by blur were particularly harmful to my mental health.

A bit of something for the Mark & Lard fans. From their final show. Childish but has me in stitches every time.

He does grate somewhat does old Ken.
But yes, popmaster is good, to be fair.
Always a good start to the day when i play along and get a double win.
As for Steve Wright I thought he was the dog's danglies in the Eighties.
Maybe not so much now.

Some of the contestants have ridiculous pop music knowledge. Helps being of a certain vintage though.ElectroClaret wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 11:18 pmHe does grate somewhat does old Ken.

All the music you need is on Spotify, I don’t feel the need to listen to someone else’s choice of music.

He talks about himself for about 50 minutes per hr and you're lucky to hear ten minutes of music

When I lived in Reading, local radio started.
We had Radio Thames Valley aka 210 Thames Valley.
Two of the young talented presenters were Steve Wright and Mike Read. They had their own shows but also teamed up for a show entitled, Read and Wright - the Wireless People.
Both excellent and went on to greater things, as everyone knows. We'll done them.

He once talked over the outro to Purple Rain and I don’t think I’ve ever quite forgiven him for it. His show was dated and I was surprised it lasted as long as it did.

Cox, Bruce & vine are brilliant, not a fan of Vanessa either, she’s so far up her own arse it’s unbelievable

I get that can happen, but in my youth I usually listened to American blues stuff, and that doesn’t get played much on Radio 2.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 02, 2022 11:09 amBut you do miss out on hearing a song you’ve not heard for 20 years that drags you back to a time in your life, magic those moments.
I will listen to Radio 6 from time to time, to get down with the kids innit

Fat Harry White used to have me crying with laughter. The number of double entendres he could fit into one short story. Brilliant.
