Less than two weeks, what do we need?

Post by DCWat » Sat Aug 20, 2022 6:18 pm

In order of priority, central defender, attacking midfielder and striker.

These for me are the areas that we look short of options in and need to address before the window closes.

I’m not going to get on the back of the team for playing it from the back and adapting to a passing style - it’s great to watch when it works. What I would say though, is that learning when not to pass it short is equally as important.

Dominant central defender, go and get an acceptable bid in for Kouyate tomorrow.

Then a centre forward as Barnes simply cannot be as involved as he is at the moment. Jay is looking good but he won’t last 90 every game / play every game.

Don’t really think we need an attacking midfielder, we’ve got an abundance of wingers / attacking mids now, especially with Twine getting back fit. Brownhill was outstanding first half today.

I don't know about priority but

A striker. Big and quick. Can drop deep, and run behind. So not much then!

A centre half. Big and quick. Left sided.

A deep central midfielder. We need back up or another option alongside Cork and Cullen. Ideally someone a bit bulkier than those two.

lf and a central midfielder.

Just need someone to take Barnes' place.

A centre half if he isn't willing to play the ones he's signed too.

Twine may make a difference - I’m not sure if the wingers are the answer or whether they’re a suitable option for a central attacking option. Are any of them an alternative to O’Hare in that central role we were looking for?

I still remain to be convinced that Brownhill is the answer for that role.

Defensively we are **** poor. We need an experienced centre half (a bit like Mcgreal next to Cahill), and another striker.

It’s concerning how easily we are opened up. With a back for and two holding midfielders, it shouldn’t be so easy. Maatsen was awful for their second goal.

Striker and commanding centre half.Without these we will struggle to achieve anything. With them we are potentially a half decent side.

This.

Although why McNally hasn't been tried next to THB I'm not sure, but Charlie isn't the answer I'm afraid.

Definitely need another striker, Jay played well for an hour, however as soon as he went off we were toothless up front.

Barnes has been a wonderful servant, but he's simply not good enough anymore, even at Championship level he's off the pace, and goes to ground far too easily as well.

I tell you what we need too-Ben Foster. Available, free, lowish wage. May not have the neat little passing movements to defenders, but hes actually holds the record for the highest number of saves in the PL. A smashing team player too. That gives Muric competition and we can get GPF off the wage bill

WE also deperately need a commanding CH, and an outright attacker with an eye for goal

Centre back. I heard that Cahill was free. He could end his career tutoring a young CB like how he started.

A striker. I love Ashley Barnes but he's done. Jay looks like a decent fit but we need an option/competition.

I love the football we play but there is a time and place for it and Kompany as to understand this or we could be in for a long season.

We certainly need a dominant centre half to play along side THB and Taylor moving to LFB, because he is a better defender than Maatsen and who was defensively poor today

Still think we need another quality player in attacking midfield/wide. Not convinced by Bastien, Benson or Vitinho at all.

Bowler would have been a better addition than Benson, Bastien or Vitinho.

As I've been saying for ages, a dominant centre half and a fast striker with a good scoring record. Kouyate and the Ukrainian lad, but the latter is a non-starter, I fell.

A striker who we can hang out hat on - and that player, may I add, can be any age. He does not need to be a kid. We need a viable alternative to Rodriguez (who we apparently need to manage the fitness of in any case). I’d happily take someone like Lewis Grabban even for a year - and no, I’m not joking. Emil Riis is being heavily linked with Middlesbrough for around £6m, again, ideal for us at a reasonable price. There are players out there - we cannot be using Barnes as a second choice option.

Think it's pretty clear. An experienced centre back(preferably a big strong lad) and a striker. It's got to the stage where Barnes isn't even good enough to be a backup.

As much as I like Maatsen, I’m glad it means Taylor won’t play CB for a few games now. Hope McNally or Egan-Riley prove their worth. 100% need a striker. Barnes should not have been offered a new deal.

I think we definitely need a goalkeeper. Our defence if it can be called that, looks very vulnerable and confidence has to come from the last line. We need another CD to play alongside our only decent defender and a combative forward who can play as a one or in a two if the formation determines. These should have been priorities and sorted before now.

Central defender.

Apparently Twine will be the answer to our strike rate, so we don't have to worry about that.

Muric will be fine once people stay off his back.

We need the same as we have done before the season started. A strong experienced central defender to add steel to our defence and a big mobile striker who is going to create pressure in the opponents box and score 10-15 goals over a season.
Tella's two goals was a big boost today and Twine should add well to the goal tally but other than Jay and Brownhill there does not look to be enough goals in the rest of the team

We're relying on Jrod and Brownhill for goals, that Bowler for Blackpool showed more ability in 20 minutes than Benson has since he walked through the door.

A dominant centre back and an alternative/compliment to Jay at centre forward.

Simple as that. And they need to be the very best we can afford. We're too easily bullied at centre back and we need more punch up top.

We'll make do with what we have elsewhere. We just need quality, not quantity in those departments.

Out:

Norris, Long, Lowton (purely as VK doesn’t want them here so get shut and give some leeway on the wage bill).
Barnes (no longer good enough for this level)

Plus anybody who the club feel aren’t good enough / who need loan football to help their development.

In:

Striker (x2)- happy for these to be loans with obligation to buy if promoted. We need a Danny Ings and a Jamie Vardy.

Centre half- left footed, experienced, comfortable with the ball and able to marshall a young and inexperienced back 5.

Left back- only if Charlie Taylor leaves.

Goalkeeper- a solid 3rd choice older head type who can be our emergency keeper (e.g. a Tom Heaton / Lee Grant who knows their career is beginning to wind down).

Need to:

Keep hold of Josh Brownhill (unless a stupid bid (e.g. £15m or over) is submitted for him and he wants to go / we need the money to just push the boat out a little bit further.)

Normally I’d say that there’s no chance of that little lot but in this transfer window with how active we’ve been…anything’s possible!

An experienced centre back. Either from the Championship or with experience of the Prem. One of the posts on this thread referred to a 2005 John McGreal. Spot on for me. We need an older head in there now.

A striker with experience of the Championship and a record of scoring goals.

Both these positions will require money to be spent. Over 10m for each one. Hopefully we will have enough funds remaining...

I can't see the club paying in excess of 10m for a experienced defender & to be brutally honest £10m on anyone.

Going to the match yesterday I thought priority must be a left-sided centre half to replace Taylor. Our sideways passing was just too slow at the back so too few attacks were actually being created to outweigh the obvious defensive risks.A ball playing defender would massively reduce the pressure we put ourselves under and help to see games out more effectively.
Also ,much as I like J-Rod when he came off yesterday we were pretty much toothless until the red cards.Neither he nor Barnes is a season-long solution making another striker a must.
As for more fire power from deep,I hope Twine can change things soon.
If I was being greedy maybe another goalkeeper wouldn't hurt and that's not a dig at Muric He's still learning to play in this team and his saves were actually game-saving yesterday but would anyone like to rely on BPF or Norris as backup?.
Overall I don't we're not too far off recruitment wise but only if we've signed more hits than misses and we may only find out in time after the transfer window has closed.
