Was previously on Clarets Mad then this but you obviously know me better than myself. Where have I claimed to be Burnley's oldest fan. And for the record, that was chanted for a while by the brain-dead NF skinheads we unfortunately had, like most other teams at the time.
Oh Burnley is wonderful….

I know it will never happen but the line could change to Vincent Kompany’s Clarets.

Re: Oh Burnley is wonderful….
So the main arguments for the song are:
- this is just another example of cancel culture
- why don’t we just sit in silence then
- don’t come to the game if you’re offended.
No one had the balls to actually argue my contention , which was that the words were archaic and embarrassing. And that it’s just sad and inappropriate in 2022 when we have many women supporters. No one defended the content of the song as far as I can see.
Don’t mix up cancel culture with evolution and a moral zeitgeist moving forward. Do we need to have songs like that to have a good atmosphere? No. Can we invent new songs that have more humour and aren’t so cringey? Yes. Should we do that, rather than discouraging people to go on the game? I’d say so.

Re: Oh Burnley is wonderful….
I see that one apparently popular view for retain and singing the song is that it’s “traditional” and that “lots of people do it”
On that basis let’s hear it for:
Bull fighting
Fox hunting
FGM
Honour killing
Drowning unwanted kittens in a sack
Child marriage
Smoking in public places
Legal discrimination on the grounds of race, gender, disability, etc, etc….
Sacking employees for no valid or fair reason
After all - lots of people used to traditionally do these things. Some still do.

It's a great song apart from the cringey tits line,so why not keep on singing the main line of the song instead.
Oh Burnley is wonderful,
Oh Burnley is wonderful,
(sing over cringe bit....Oh Burnley is wonderful)
Oh Burnley is wonderful.
Still a great song but with no cringe.

Stirring what exactly.I assume you mean having a different opinion to you. I was simply making a point that over time, some songs/chants become unacceptable. Racist chants are thankfully no more, why are misogynistic ones OK.I don't want an answer thanks, we'll agree to disagree.

Words impact behaviour. Do you not think that describing women as ‘tits and fanny’ could also lead to equally disrespectful and unacceptable behaviour towards women?

Awful chant - I remember going on as a 14 yr old lad with some mates and their friends that seemed to love it, always sounded unduly crass and a bit strange…
Not to mention it was strange with a bunch of virgins chanting that but whatever

Lot's of things on that list still happen today even though it's outlawed, people still hunt foxes when the hounds pick up, people still smoke in some public places, farmers still kill feral kittens, people still get married under the legal age, people still get killed & disappear with the honour killings, people still get sacked without good reason, these things don't lead to prosecution because no evidence exists/difficult to prove & it's not in the public interests to pursue.Middle-agedClaret wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 12:28 pmI see that one apparently popular view for retain and singing the song is that it’s “traditional” and that “lots of people do it”

It's all down to personal choice it's not fair to try to dictate our preferences onto other people, if people want to sing it to their hearts content leave them be if people don't equally leave them be, compromise is key.willsclarets wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 6:34 pmI’m not in the least upset, sorry to upset you. 5 pages to discuss something where the OP is just blatantly correct by any civilised yardstick. It's a pathetic song that is just embarrassing to hear sung with large numbers of women and kids in attendance.

It makes no difference on the motives or whether internal or external the actions themselves are causing offence to either side, it's the actions nothing else, the kneeling & the singing, debating the reasoning prompting the actions is a separate complex issue.

Re: Oh Burnley is wonderful….
I was at Wigan. My ears are still ringing from the volume and the bloody clapping.
1/. The best way out of this would be to speed it up and clap throughout, just like all the other songs.
2/. The Vitinho song is brilliant, it's slower, you can hear the words and there is no bloody clapping. We are quite tuneful when we try.
3/. The, "here's to you Vincent Company" song would be great if people knew the original tune. Can somebody please post it?
Here endeth my observations.

Maybe more would join in with the singing if the naff songs were dropped.BigGaz wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 12:13 pmYes, because what we need is more policing and sterilisation of an atmosphere which is already hardly raucous and seemingly requires little stimulus to get the crowd apathetic or downright hostile towards a group of players that have spent 5 match days together.

For me the best song is still 'no nay never'.
The atmosphere when this is belted out from all sides is incredible. For some reason we don't sing it as often these days.
The worst thind is when there's a goal kick and the fans gi ' ohhhhhhh you're $h1t ahhhhhhhh'.
Grown men shouting this really makes me cringe
