That free kick
Twine comes on just in time. A bit far out but certainly worth a go. Written in the stars, I thought. Then we pass it wide and Maatsen fails to beat the first man.
How frustrating was that?
PLEASE no more of those when Twiney is on the pitch!

Re: That free kick
We need to start a petition that goes all the way to Parliament banning Brownhill from free kicks.

We apparently have a set piece coach, hoping to see one of his ideas pay off soon...
Other than the individuals skill of putting it directly the net Maatsen, JBG and Twine ( and brownhill just whack it hard and high ) there doesn't seem anything different.
Not sure what could be done differently, I just supposed I'd notice something with it being a paid role
Last night's free kicks I literally questioned it after the free kick the OP mentioned

Have you not been watching our corners this season?MACCA wrote: ↑Wed Feb 15, 2023 6:01 amWe apparently have a set piece coach, hoping to see one of his ideas pay off soon...

Re: That free kick
Go on, I'll let you explain the coaching that went into the last minute corner with everyone up, slung into the mixer that gets scrambled in?
Literally happens at every level every weekend.
Now back to the original point of the OP.
Hopefully one of these short free kick routines pay off soon or at least you can see the plan.
I get we tried to change the angle ( I think ) but it wasn't very well executed

Re: That free kick
Does it matter if it short, long, slung or just a **** so long as it ends up in the net?
Personally think our set pieces have been excellent this season.

Re: That free kick
And the movement in the box..eg 3rd goal at Norwich, and the different routines on nearly every corner
Re: That free kick
We vary our corners a lot. Norwich away is a great example where one was to the near post which Vithino scored from and the next corner was to the far post where Maatsen pulled it back for Ekdal to score. There was another good example last night when Barnes came to the near post for the low cross and got the shot in from a narrow angle.
Re: That free kick
To say we aren't a 'big' side and according to some posters would never score from a corner this season, we've actually scored from the most corners in the league.

Re: That free kick
That free kick is another example of our decision making last night just not being at it, so many times the ball went the wrong way or we dribbled into trouble. Barnes spooned a shot from 25 yards out, JBG straight at keeper from 20 yards out, both times zaroury was in loads of space for a simple pass

Spooned a shot? Was that his shot in the first minute that the goalkeeper tipped onto the bar or his sliced volley?123EasyasBFC wrote: ↑Wed Feb 15, 2023 8:38 amThat free kick is another example of our decision making last night just not being at it, so many times the ball went the wrong way or we dribbled into trouble. Our corners have been brilliant this season. We’ve literally won games with them

Re: That free kick
Honestly don’t think so. The second one was about 5 yards closer, I’d say, which he hit just over the bar. I think he could have got the longer one on target, then you hope it’s really well struck, a keeper error/fumble or saves it for a corner and you build pressure.
Instead we go short and then don’t beat the first man. I’m a huge fan of our new style but do think there are circumstances when we win FKs in the opposition half where we just need to get a shot away or put it straight it in the mixer.

How many have been passed three times and not even gone in the box though?CoolClaret wrote: ↑Wed Feb 15, 2023 9:34 amOur corners have been brilliant this season. We’ve literally won games with them
We’re good at the ones we put in so we should do it every time (to be fair I do think we’re seeing less short now).

Re: That free kick
Even Roberto Carlos would have gone "Nah mate, too far out that"
Re: That free kick
It was absolutely the right decision not to shoot from that far out. The fact that Maatsen totally mucks up the cross doesn’t change that.

Re: That free kick
You don't think coaching goes into corner routines? All levels. But you need to score against your level, under pressure.MACCA wrote: ↑Wed Feb 15, 2023 6:43 amGo on, I'll let you explain the coaching that went into the last minute corner with everyone up, slung into the mixer that gets scrambled in?

Think we've scored from a few this season and more than 2 direct freekicks.
I think we're doing fine in that department and much better in defense recently. Also coaching.

Re: That free kick
I think I was one of those people, and leaving the game last night I commented on how much of a threat we've become on corners - and in fairness less of a liability when defending them. So the set-piece coach must be doing something right.

Re: That free kick
The set piece coach is also the performance analyst, Richard Bredice, who was at City when Kompany was playing. He took him to Anderlecht as a performance analyst and I think he’s been working on his UEFA A Coaching license. There is an interesting interview with him here, not sure if you or others have seen it:
