Not so much a book, Goody1975......More a collection of random notes......but more intriguing each time I go back to them......Football was clearly so different back then.
From a Burnley perspective, in terms a real progress, everthing seems to revert to that 1912/13 season when we were promoted to Division One. The likes of Bert Freeman and Richard Lindley were really making their mark and the following season we reached the FA Cup Final beating Liverpool 1-0. Tommy Boyle was also starting to have a massive influence at this time.
Can't establish whether Grandad actually made the Final, but, no matter, he was clearly so proud of his local team's achievements at that time......Then WW1 intervened, before we became an even greater force following the end of the War......and Tommy Boyle was even more influential in the 30 games unbeaten in1920/21.

The referee was Mr Herbert Bamlett who five years later refereed our FA Cup final against Liverpool.

All the generations of football are different but intriguing none the less, it's the competition that bridges the divide that time puts between them.Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Wed Mar 22, 2023 7:06 pmNot so much a book, Goody1975......More a collection of random notes......but more intriguing each time I go back to them......Football was clearly so different back then.

If a player was the best in the 1920's or 60's it's relative to now.
Nobody can say how good Tommy Lawton, Duncan Edwards, Jimmy Greaves, Jimmy McIlroy or George Best would be in todays football but if they were the best of their generation they'd be one of the best now.
Just different eras but class transcends time.

Just how good was Tommy Boyle, and his side either side of the World War ?
Captain of the Cup winners, then Captain of the League Champions.
Broken hero ?......Maybe in the end, but simply hero for me.....and Grandad.

Stan Lynn a full back who went to Villa or Brum I believe.
Jimmy Harrower(spelling) left half or number 6. Played against his son also called Jimmy.
George Stewart Centre forward with a crew cut. Not sure if he played fir Scotland but think he was looked at. Can't remember which club he moved too but it would have been an upwards move.
A few years later Mike Ferguson who went to the darkside.
A decent keeper not very tall but might also gave been a few years later. Another upwards move I think.
Think one or two more or I might have a Google.

Are you for real? You want our club to send the tickets back (can they do this?) as a boycott, but if they don’t you’re going to enter the ballot and attend if successful?PaintYorkClaretnBlue wrote: ↑Wed Mar 22, 2023 5:36 pmI’ve emailed the club asking that they send the tickets back and put a big screen on. I’m saying that as a sth with well over 6k points. I’ll enter the ballot if they don’t send them back because it would be pointless as a one man protest!
Has it occurred to you that if it’s just a one man protest then you’re the only person who wants to protest? Why would you be selfish enough to want to stop 2000 Burnley fans who want to attend this fixture from doing so whilst at the same time being one of those 2000 fans if given the chance?

My memory did OK there. Also just seen via Google George Hudson who moved to Peterboro and then Coventry, hit some good numbers there as a centre forward.

Yes, I am for real. I’d love them to send them back but if the don’t then of course I’m going to enter that ballot. I’m absolutely certain that there are many others who feel the same way however there’s absolutely no chance that nobody would buy tickets if they were on sale, hence why I’d enter.Rileybobs wrote: ↑Wed Mar 22, 2023 11:31 pmAre you for real? Nobody would notice if I wasn’t there so the protest wouldn’t have any effect. If we didn’t sell any tickets it would.

Unfortunately, when you look at what PL clubs offer (3000 out of a capacity of 61,000 at Spurs) the 2000 tickets Rovers are giving us, compared to the 2,200 we gave them, isn't much of a news story outside of both clubs.PaintYorkClaretnBlue wrote: ↑Thu Mar 23, 2023 8:42 amNobody would notice if I wasn’t there so the protest wouldn’t have any effect. Thus I suspect from an outside neutral point of view, any boycott of tickets would seem a bit childish.

What point would one person make?
I would support a full boycott
That's not happening so I'll go if possible

Not at all, the incident with the lad at the end of the game was him being off his tree and apparently threatening a women with her child, which was dealt with by people in the vicinity. The people at the game said he was like this during the match and perhaps if the stewards had done their jobs he would have been escorted out or refused entry before the incident happened.Milltown1882 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 23, 2023 5:15 pmFighting in the stands with each other, excessive drug use and the other think that’s not really relevant to be mentioned.
The general issue regarding drug use is a football wide/society problem not isolated within our fanbase, these same fans attended the games at Wigan and Preston in very large numbers and don't think there was any widespread disorder.
