Wimbledon
Just watching the final and the 2nd set is quite decent, however the whole thing is being spoilt by Andrew Castle,
Is there a more annoying commentator? He talks like he was the greatest player ever when in reality he was at best very very average

Re: Wimbledon
Great game of tennis though.
Re: Wimbledon
Wow not often anyone agrees with my missus but she said the same thing about Andrew Castle. His most annoying trademark comment is "too good" How the hell can it be too good if it wins the point, brilliant, fantastic, very good, excellent etc but never too good.

I've been watching the juniors. We have done well this year with the boys champion, first for 61 years, and the U14 boys champion. Unfortunately the girls lost in the U14 final and the girls double final. The 17 year old that won the boys has some serve. Blasting them down at 132 mph.

Re: Wimbledon
The previous winner in 1962 was Stanley Matthews - son of the former Blackpool and England footballer of the same name. Can’t remember him having a successful tennis career at a higher level though.Commy wrote: ↑Sun Jul 16, 2023 4:18 pmI've been watching the juniors. John Lloyd said there is a lot of talent coming through. It depends on how much they want it though as they can quite easily vanish.
Re: Wimbledon
We also won the doubles wheelchair and runner up in the singles, and a player in the winning men's doubles. Not a bad year to say we aren't supposed to be any good at this game in some peoples eyes.

5th game of the 3rd set was just 6 minutes shorter than the whole of the 1st set.

Possibly the greatest single game in a final of all time
27 mins long

Re: Wimbledon
I actually quite enjoy listening to AC. He's arguably a better pundit than he was a player and I would prefer to listen to him over Henman or Murray who are arguably the only British men's players that would qualify to commentate if you are only going to give them the job based on their sporting success.
Anyway the final itself is turning into an absolute classic!

Re: Wimbledon
Fantastic match from both players but a deserved win for Alcaraz in the end after coming back from a terrible start.
Good to see Novak was very gracious in defeat as well and a nice touch taking time to smile and shake hands with some of the ball boys/girls as he left the court.

Absolute classic game, the power the 2 of them can generate is frightening, what a fantastic watch on a Sunday afternoon

Re: Wimbledon
Novak obviously v disappointed, and smashing his racquet on the net post was not good, BUT, he is a true sportsman, ALWAYS gracious in defeat, and admitted he lost to the better guy on the day. Correct.Vintage Claret wrote: ↑Sun Jul 16, 2023 7:20 pmFantastic match from both players but a deserved win for Alcaraz in the end after coming back from a terrible start.

Did he bore you to defeat by talking inane shite all the way through the game?Marney&Mee wrote: ↑Sun Jul 16, 2023 5:16 pmReminds me of my best sporting moments. Played squash against him when he’d just retired from tennis. He beat me 3-0 but I took 20 pts off him. Couldn’t handle my drop shots…

Re: Wimbledon
Three commentators is two more than they need. It's like Sky football - the more commentators you have, the more they feel the need to talk more than their colleagues. All the commentator needs to do is fill in some technical stuff that the audience might not know - we don't need to hear "what a great shot" because that's what our eyes are for.

I know quite a few people who go to the Derby and Royal Ascot and they're not tossers.
They've got huge amounts of money but they're not tossers.
