He's not over the hill by any stretch but when players reach 30 clubs are reluctant to offer lengthy extensions in the majority of cases, he'll do a job as a free agent.

He’s the same age as Wood was when Newcastle paid £25 mill for him. He was 31 when Forest paid £17 mill. I’d take Redmond over him nowJakubclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jul 16, 2023 9:23 pmNobody wants him with the mindset of selling him on, yes people are interested in him on a short term basis.

We all know why that move took place & what happened afterwards, NUFC paying crazy money shouldn't be symbolic or an example for other clubs being foolhardy, Newcastle can afford to be that way & it worked out well for them.roperclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jul 16, 2023 9:32 pmHe’s the same age as Wood was when Newcastle paid £25 mill for him. I think I'll take a pass if you think he is a decent player claretspice. I still remember you comparing Jay Simpson to Didier Drogba.claretspice wrote: ↑Sun Jul 16, 2023 8:24 pmRedmond is a decent player with good Premier League pedigree (and no less than Pep is on record thinking he's a better player than given credit for). No accident Saints were relegated the year they let him go.
We've got to accept we have a limited budget, doubtless made more limited by the fact that since ALK took over, debt finance has become significantly more expensive/difficult. If we are spending big on a keeper, having already spent sizeable money on Bayer and O'Shea, then we're going to have to be pragmatic in a couple of areas. If say Kompany wants the lad from Metz and that's going to be a real significant fee, or to spend big on the lad from Millwall, or for the midfielder at Wolfsburg - we are going to have to cut our cloth elsewhere. Not every player we sign this summer can be part of the money ball plan - we can't afford the capital for that.
Not chasing Tella to ridiculous fees, and signing =
Redmond on a free instead, might well be a sensible part of that balancing act. After all, this is the player who a season ago kept Tella out of the Southampton team.

People seem to think our whole policy is to buy players who have resale value, that won’t be the case as a premier league club, obviously we need players with sell on value but the value of having players coming towards the latter end of their careers can’t be forgotten

Not particularly excited by the Redmond link but this is a very good point. I’d take him over Wood and he’s been sold twice recently for very substantial 8 figure sums. In that context it’s a good deal.

Exactly. He’s 29. 3 year contract, and if the worst was to happen, we would still be able to bank a few million for him next year.

Onauchu at 28, Caleta Carr at 26, Aribo 26, Orsic 30, Maintland Nile’s 25.
With their already vastly experienced squad I wouldn’t say they went total money ball. They did spend an awful lot of money though. What was it 140m spent last season

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I’m wondering how those facts/vague similarities make their potential and play styles the same? Especially when one of your data points is ‘their fans think he’s good’ and the other 2 things are actually different (they started in different academies and were recruited by different teams in different leagues)roperclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jul 16, 2023 8:33 pmAlex Scott
Released by both Southampton and Bournemouth academies.
Rocked up playing for Guernsey in non league.
Two Seasons at Bristol City - their fans think he’s good.
Josh Brownhill.
Released by Man Utd Academy
Rocked up at Preston in League 2
3 Seasons at Bristol City - their fans though he was good.
Pretty similar other than Brownhill did Two years grounding in league 1 whereas Scott did 6 months in non league
Not having a go but I just don’t see how both players being released from different academies has any bearing on what kind of players they are. Especially years after they were released. It’s like comparing actors based on where they went to school. By all means let me know your thinking if I’ve read this wrong.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
The point was not to compare them as players. The point was to question Newcastle’s statement that Scott had obvious Premiership pedigree. He may very well turn out to be a good player, but in terms of ‘pedigree’ not much different to a young Josh Brownhill, who he doesn’t rate.davideyresleftear wrote: ↑Mon Jul 17, 2023 6:08 amI’m wondering how those facts/vague similarities make their potential and play styles the same? Not sure how you can’t see it? Brownhill was 24 before he had made the same number of championship appearances. This lad is 19 and looking at a 25m pound move to the premier league. After impressing for England u20s.
The last player to have this many championship appearances at his age was Jude Bellingham

Players with hundreds of appearances in the hardest league in the world and not thirty yet. Don’t want them
Makes you wonder if they would do the same if it was their money they were spending. Probably not

The other player is approaching the end of his career. Of course he is going to have more appearances.
Stupid comparison. It’s like saying why sign Bellingham when they already have Modric who has 100s of appearances in La liga

To be fair, 29 isn’t approaching the end of a career. 33 plus and I’d agree. Not every signing we make can be of the mikatuadze mold. We do need a bit of experience too.

Depends how much he plays. If he’s going to be a regular I would suggest it’s not a great signing. If it’s just a bench player I would agreegandhisflipflop wrote: ↑Mon Jul 17, 2023 7:32 amEven if we had 12 months out of him on a 9 man bench, I fail to see how he wouldn’t be a solid signing.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
He won't be signed as either. We know he has the skills and he will be a regular if he produces the goods every week or a bench player if he doesn't. Still a decent signing on a free transfer provided his wage demands are within our scales.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 17, 2023 7:34 amDepends how much he plays. Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
There seems to be light at the end of the tunnel with this thread for those who have struggled the last 12 months while there was nothing to whinge about. It feels good to be back to the same people moaning about almost every player we are linked with.
The latest being we shouldn't sign Redmond as he isn't good enough and Southampton have proved that by only signing him to a 1 year deal and the letting him go, as well as his stats aren't that good. Then we are told by some of same posters we should sign Tella a player who Southampton decided wasn't good enough for the Premier league last summer then witnessed him up to January and still didn't recall him while in a relegation fight, not only that we should be paying 15m plus for this player while using Southampton as a yardstick for a players ability.
It is always funny to see the "underwhelming" comment when a player is linked it's like a child and his christmas presents, although I have yet to see anyone be overwhelmed with a signing, strange how some seem to revel in being miserable.
Here's to being linked with a few more players, you can never see the stupid phrase "bang average" too many times.

Redmond would only be second choice behind Zaroury anyway, definitely isn’t a bad option off the bench. Allows us to spend elsewhere on improving the 11.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Redmond with his premier league experience in my opinion would be first choice.
