There's no way Ukraine can join NATO until this conflict is over. Zelensky understands this. If they joined now we would be duty bound to send troops in.
As Zelensky says, they are fighting this war, as much on our behalf as on theirs. We owe them a lot, not least our gratitude.
I don't think it matters as much to Europe, as it does to America, but they must be rubbing their hands with glee at the opportunity to get a country in Ukraines unique position within NATO.
At the same time Russia must be shitting it. As said many times, Putin has really shot himself in the foot, because of his ego.

I've read that the railway is still knackered from last time and they can only run passenger trains on it - nothing too heavy.

...still, it could do with another droning!

Will Putin risk going ? If he does would
his mode of transport be a legitimate target, whilst there would he be vulnerable.

Presume this is Putin’s reply to the latest Kerch bridge bombing ? Not only not re-newing the grain deal but bombing the actual grain stores which is pretty low even for Putin. The flip side being surely UKR knew damn well hitting Vlads’s sacred bridge would result in exactly that .

Even so the South African president was still making overtures to Putin to visit South Africa for a Conference, even though the bombing of grain stores will condemn tens of thousands more people on the continent to starvation.

Seems UKR can hit Crimea at will, perhaps testing what Putin’s reactions will be ? Which are usually scattergun ( literally ) laced with personal indignation “ you’re bombing RUS the gloves are off “ type of thing .

Far as I can see UKR are “ out shelling “ RUS ( even pro russ channels are suprised at the 24/7 shell fest on the front ) which is pretty much what “ The West” wants , i.e enough to stop any RUS advances and very slowly squeeze them .

Looks like the business end of the UKR counteroffensive kicked off yesterday with gains on most fronts ( though big equipment losses) This is tonight’s pro RUS “wargonzo” report
and again stating the endless intensity of the UKR artillery ,

These guys are allowed to move with the Russian troops and report

Successful drone attack on the Russian naval base at Novorossiysk (which is on the Black Sea well the south of Crimea)

The ship being towed after the attack - I'm not sure anything with a list like that is going to avoid going down to be honest

List is what, 20-30 degrees. It is in a harbour which are usually pretty shallow so if it does capsize it should be recoverable although of course more damage will be done by all the sea water etc inside the ship.

What's impressive is the reach of the Ukrainian surface threat. Whether the Russians didn't consider this or failed in some other way I can't say. In WW2 nets and other obstacles were used to try and prevent attacks - mostly from torpedoes it has to be said. I wonder if Ukraine could design a drone torpedo boat - or submarine?

The range of these drones is thought to be about 800km. The distance, for example, from Odesa to Novorossiysk is around 850km.

The various naval experts who I follow on twitter all saying the same thing - essentially the Russian Black Sea Fleet main bases of Sevastopol and Novorossiysk are vulnerable and these attacks essentially stop the Black Sea Fleet from doing anything like interdicting the Grain routes from Ukraine

Both sides can get their various exports out by other means of course, but I don't think anyone had "Ukraine has effectively closed the Black Sea to Russian warships" in any realistic scenario

The use of drones and unmanned attack boats must be having every military force in the world scrambling to readjust how to deal with it

Suddenly stuff like Gepards are worth their weight in gold

Indeed ^^^
This war has inadvertently changed the face of military war zone combat , mainly because of drones . It’s almost like a cctv on any combat zone ,tap in the coordinates and bingo , whether it’s directing the drone itself or ultra accurate info on static targets . As for the 800km + drones they’re something else ,not to mention the precision of some of the shells the yanks provided , Excaliburs possibly ?

It will need a dry dock to repair - its tied up on a quay in the main harbour and still has a hell of a list

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-66452100

Russian forces continued offensive operations on the Svatove-Kreminna line, in the Bakhmut area, along the Avdiivka-Donetsk City line, along the Donetsk-Zaporizhia Oblast border area, and in western Zaporizhia Oblast and advanced on the Svatove-Kreminna line, north of Bakhmut, and in western Zaporizhia Oblast.

Ukrainian forces continued counteroffensive operations on at least three sectors of the front and advanced in some areas on August 9.

Basically more of the same, no big breakthroughs.
