Reflecting on the match on the drive home, it occurred to me how well Dyche did to keep us up in the Premier League for as long as he did with one arm tied behind his back - given how off it we’ve looked so far.

Gone from one extreme to the other....Dyche wanted experience.....Vinny wants youth/potential with the they'll make money for the club.....but will it work this season....I hope it does....we'll see...utc

I agree we'll get better. But really worried about defence and lack of experience. We don't seem to have a leader out there....aka Mee, Joey, Tarks

You can go further, last season 4-2-3-1 and this season 4-2-4, why have we changed? Why play one left midfielder in a harder league

I rarely post on here but I have read the board virtually every day for some years.
Many posts on here tonight are laughable : " VK has lost the plot" to name but one.
So I won't bother reading the board anymore.
I confidently predict VK wil be an established PL manager having steered the team to mid-table safety come next May.
Some so-called "fans" ought to be ashamed of themselves.
I hope to return in the spring - until then, COYC, UTC, NNN.

I said to her to whom I must behave … when the Burnley team walked out I said “are these the ball boys “ … and the opening 3 games it has been men against boys. Very expensive boys at that.

We were never going to hit our stride for 7 or 8 games, and have played 3 of the most inform teams in the league. Some real bedwetters on here.

Reality is in the long run, we are better off playing these teams, that we traditionally get little to nothing off, now, and learning some lessons, than against those teams we expect to be down there.

We'll finish top half. There I said it. You've got to see what you can get away with with any team shape/system/personnel configuration, and when so many players have never played at this level there are a lot of teething problems. We've played three teams who might actually all end up making up the top four, and we've cycled between about three different shapes per game trying to find our balance, so we're very much in the experimental phase of this team, and we've done it against three really good sides. There are lessons learned: Ameen at CB, not fullback; Foster is immense (better than I thought he would be) and will run at anyone - he's basically Tella this season; we probably need to play three midfielders not two; Larsen is good enough to start; we won't be able to overload opposition defensive areas this season, and any system built around that leaves us exposed; we might be able to play a high line with a 3-man midfield, or a deep line with a 2, but we can't play a high line with a 2 man midfield. Then some of the other things like unclean touches and passes can be explained as young players adjusting to the level. If this were a team of 32 year olds making sloppy passes I'd be more worried.

Some of these things seem obvious and seem like the basics of football, but you don't actually know what you can get away with until your players have been tested. All the 'failures' are basically data inputs into an analytical system, and you reconfigure to eliminate them one-by-one. We have to do it this way because we don't have many players who have played in the prem. The good thing is we have a lot of options available.

Go back to last season, we had something similar with a string of draws at the beginning, where it looked like the argument 'you can't play that way in the championship' might be proven right, but we stuck to our guns, made a few adjustments as the season went on and we improved. All our attackers look like legit PL attackers, Foster especially so. It's totally viable to adjust what goes on behind them without them losing their potency, but naturally if, for example, you sacrifice say JBG out wide for Brownhill playing centrally, that's going to affect the pressing shape, so Zeki/Foster/the third attacker need to adjust accordingly because they're now pressing as 3 rather than as 4. This calibration takes time, but it's better than say Dyche's philosophy of trying to stay in the game and hoping to win from the one or two chances you create all game.

Some seem to have the attitude that we weren't going to get anything today so it doesn't matter.

Forest didn't seem to have the same mindset. A team we are supposed to be competing with.

I'm still confident we can make the top half.

Listen to or read Vinny's comments after the game. We didn't start well last season but we learned from each and every mistake.

There's a much steeper learning curve this season but after last year I'm confident we'll improve.

I think we will finish top half.
VK will take a long hard look at where we are,and why, then reassess.
To much inexperience in the team at the moment.
One step at a time, but we will come good.

We've played City, Villa, and Spurs. What do people genuinely want from those 3 games? We fought til the end today and the lads should hold their heads high. It's going to be a long and arduous season of ups and downs, a shock win here, an unfortunate thumping there. Before the seasons started I'd have taken 17th before a ball was kicked and was laughed at because "we're better than that" and whilst I do believe that, I still think the only focus for this season should be staying up, whether that be 17th or 1st. Back the lads on the pitch and watch them come to life in 2 or 3 months time. If we make it to Bournemouth away with 4 points I'll be happy man (not including the possible Luton rearrangement).

You can currently get 9-1 for a top ten finish.

If people are confident that’s a good price.

I suspect if we improve our defence we can finish around 15-17th. VK will have the biggest challenge of his career sorting out that back line though. I am not sure there’s a worst one in the league currently.

To be fair Jjjack I don’t think it’s the results but the manner of the defeats. We have been steamrolled in each game.

I received nasty vitriolic abuse on here for stating over the last few weeks that this was the worst defence we had ever had in the Premier League and that it was even worse than the defence we had last season!...

Fortunately, I won't stoop to their level... I have been proved right, although I was stating the obvious to be honest but I take no satisfaction in these results, even though I expected them...

The worrying thing is, If we get just 1 or 2 injuries in defence for a lengthy amount of time, we are absolutely shafted which is crazy with the backing VK has received...

We can't change the mess of a transfer window that has led to this but we can support them as much as we can and I think somewhere in this team, we have the players to be competitive against the teams we need to beat but we haven't made it easy...

I have worries though, that VK won't be able to pull this around in time... There were red flags last season and he's compounded those red flags this season with the same types of mistakes which may suggest it is a weakness in his management style rather than just inexperience but hopefully, he stops with the recent silly comments and gets back to basics... I still support him for now and will support the team as much as I can because they will need it more than ever!

To be fair Jjjack I don’t think it’s the results but the manner of the defeats. We have been steamrolled in each game.
It's a new team. We're a brand new Burnley from what we've known before in the Premier League, they need time to bed and we as fans need to give them that time too. Get to December and assess the situation fully, I'll certainly be picking the games apart week in week out in the pub. Saying what I, somebody with 0 managerial experience, would've done differently and riding the ups and downs as they come. I also don't believe we are in danger *yet*. Lets play some of the teams around us first.

Three games in… no need to be wetting the bed….however. Al dakhil at right back. Roberts at left back. Wow. Just wow.

Yes. I know we are in transition, but should we really be trying to reinvent the wheel at this stage?

I suppose you could call it (playing a resurgent spurs at home) a free hit, but surely playing your own team in the positions they are used to is an absolute basic necessity. What we saw today was Gareth Southgate levels of logic.

I’ve been firmly in the camp of “VK knows best” but after seeing that today, I’m now not so sure. That was just utterly bizarre.

Having said that, we didn’t get relegated today.

I appreciate your viewpoint, and I think everyone appreciates that this is a longer term project.

However I do think fans have a right to show concern based on the first three games.

I would say they are arguably three of the most uncompetitive premier league games in row we have ever had.

From recruitment down to tactics, we have had a worst start than I think all of us anticipated.

I think questions about VKs safety are too early to question. However it did make me think today do fans think Pace will let us get relegated (worst case scenario) with VK still in charge?

First half today, first half against City, first half of the second half v Villa… we were very competitive in all those periods. We didn’t deserve to be losing at HT today. Second half v Villa we score a 2nd if Diaby didn’t clinically find the bottom corner / Al-Dakhil took Digne down. So I disagree on your point on it being so uncompetitive. I’ve seen us barely have half a chance against many teams at this level for weeks on end. Today we had almost 2 xG against a very good team. In fact those periods I highlight are major positives and I’m exciting to see how we take on teams who aren’t the top 6 (albeit our fixture list has thrown up most of them all at once).
