Japan Plane Crash

Post by Fretters » Tue Jan 02, 2024 12:46 pm

A passenger jet has collided with a coastguard plane when landing in Japan, causing it to burst into flames as it touched down. Despite being fully engulfed in flames, all passengers and crew have been evacuated which is absolutely unbelievabley. Sadly, five died on the coastguard plane.

Just looking at the footage on Sky News, incredible that everyone on the A350 escaped. Sad though that 5 of the coastguard on their way to assist in the Earthquake relief effort lost their lives.

I think because Japanese society is generally different to most in that they have a polite manner and tend to be compliant to instructions, this will have helped in the orderly evacuation of the aircraft. I'm not sure but suspect in many other Countries it may have been a different outcome.

A Canadian plane crashed and burst into flame a few years back. Everyone got off that one too, even though half the doors were inoperable due to flames.

[Edit - a French plane, which crashed in Canada.]

That was certainly the case in America back in the early 2000s, i read it took them 9 minutes to evacuate a burning plane as everyone grabbed luggage, I think the Japanese took 90 seconds. As you say, totally different society and ultimately saved them from dieing.
I read a comment online saying “no point delaying to save belongings as you can’t take a trailer on your funeral hearse if you die”

Seems that the Coastguard plane hadn't been given permission to enter the runway, although the pilot (who was the only person to survive) says that it had.

looked like the wing and, possibly the engine sliced through the coastguard plane which may have thought it was off the runway. But the A350 has a massive wingspan that is wider than the runway!

The main reason that everybody on the A350 is good planning, good design, practice and organisation.

For something different, but related take a look at the amazing footage recorded here:

https://twitter.com/Rainmaker1973/statu ... 4965379251

The earthquake that hit Japan on measured a magnitude of 7.6 on the richter scale. Tragically, 73 people are known to have died but to put it into perspective an earthquake of the exact same magnitude in Kashmir in 2005 killed 79,000 people.

The reason for the shocking difference in casualties and fatalities is because of Japanese planning and building design to cope with earthquakes.

We're very fortunate to live in the modern western world.

There is a hold line well short of the runway which allows for wingspan. Also flashing yellow lights warning of active runway ahead.

Looks like the blame will sit firmly with the surviving coast guard captain.

Not if the transcript is correct. They said 'hold at C', and they didn't. ATC can't check every plane is actually doing exactly what it was told to.

The red hold line lights were not working according to latest reports

Maybe a contributory factor, but doesn't get past being told to hold at C5 and they didn't. And there should be multiple lights signs on top of the red ones.
