Re: General Info - Crystal Palace (a)
decent pub recommendations for away fans?
Re: General Info - Crystal Palace (a)
Last time I went I drove to Finchley Central, tube to St. Pancras and then Thameslink to Norwood Junction (every half hour). Very pain free journey, cheap parking and I think it was about 9 quid for the train. The only away pub we went to though was at the opposite side of the ground so a decent walk from Norwood Junction.
Re: General Info - Crystal Palace (a)
How much was it on the Tube from Finchley Central? 2/6d?Jjjack wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2024 3:50 pmLast time I went I drove to Finchley Central, tube to St. Pancras and then Thameslink to Norwood Junction (every half hour). One for the teenagers there....
Re: General Info - Crystal Palace (a)
It's short of decent pubs.
I normally go to Thornton Heath and there is the Railway Telegraph near the station (although that has been home fans only sometimes) or the Prince George on the way to the ground. I'd say the Railway Telegraph is better.

What’s it like getting back into central London on the train after? Is it as painful as getting away from Brighton, or are the trains more regular? Thinking Norwood Junction.

Not too bad from what I remember. There's not as many people heading that way and there are two separate lines nearby (Thornton Heath is a different line to Norwood Junction).box_of_frogs wrote: ↑Thu Feb 01, 2024 7:18 amWhat’s it like getting back into central London on the train after? Never been to palace but I’m going on the train to King’s Cross so which is the best way to palace from there please?
Re: General Info - Crystal Palace (a)
Go to St. Pancras thameslink and get the thameslink train that stops at Norwood Junction - every half hour. Very short walk from KX to the thameslink platforms.Steeton claret wrote: ↑Thu Feb 01, 2024 11:17 amNever been to palace but I’m going on the train to King’s Cross so which is the best way to palace from there please?

Re: General Info - Crystal Palace (a)
Can I just ask where people get their train tickets from ? I use the trainline app but it just seems so expensive to get there this way.
Any help would be appreciated

Go direct to their site and often cheaper.
You need some sort of 1/3 off pass for trains to be worthwhile though.

Re: General Info - Crystal Palace (a)
Decent service from Norwood Junction to London Bridge - we've usually used that route. The other option is Selhurst station, both about the same distance away and I think that goes into Victoria.box_of_frogs wrote: ↑Thu Feb 01, 2024 7:18 amWhat’s it like getting back into central London on the train after? I loved it going to palace
Re: General Info - Crystal Palace (a)
Thornton Heath is also about the same distance (on the same line as Selhurst but the stop before) and has a few pubs on the way to the ground.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Feb 01, 2024 12:02 pmDecent service from Norwood Junction to London Bridge - we've usually used that route. That's the one station I've never used - and they are all about the same distance away. We've sorted our trip out this year and it's train in to Norwood Junction.

Is that the one where you took us to that working men’s club styled Wetherspoons post match?
Re: General Info - Crystal Palace (a)
Sadly that has now been turned into a gym. I miss it every time I walk past.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Thu Feb 01, 2024 2:54 pmIs that the one where you took us to that working men’s club styled Wetherspoons post match?

Re: General Info - Crystal Palace (a)
Sad times.... the chippy just up the road was good as well.
Re: General Info - Crystal Palace (a)
That social club is still there though with the cask ales and the cheese and onion cobs you can still taste 3 days later due to them having half an onion in each one. Well almost! It’s on a side street a few minutes walk from the stadium. Victory Club, South Norwood.
Nice people and they welcome away fans.

Re: General Info - Crystal Palace (a)
Use Norwood Junction if you can. It's quite a busy interchange so the trains will be more frequent and go straight through to London Bridge without stopping
Selhurst and Thornton Heath are on the all stopping service to London Victoria and it takes more than twice as long to get there, compared to Norwood Junction.
If travelling to Euston or Kings Cross then you can get there just as easily from London Bridge as you can from Victoria

Re: Pubs for Crystal Palace.

Re: Pubs for Crystal Palace.
I'm coming in from Norwood Junction so looks like the Victory club rather than the Railway Telegraph for me. It's a fair walk from Norwood Junction and on the opposite side of the ground near Thornton Heath station is the Telegraph.

We are using the Thameslink train this year - we've usually got the train back from Norwood Junction to London Bridge after the game.

Re: Pubs for Crystal Palace.
Could I recommend Southwark Brewing Co (SBC)...the first one of the Bermondsey Mile microbreweries and not far from London Bridge station. OK, it's not that close to the Selhurst Park - much better for Millwall next season if we're in the same division, of course - but the beer's fab and round the corner is Maltby Street market where you can grab some grub and take it back to the brewery and scoff it there. It's a good place to meet up before the game and watch whatever match is on the screens there.
It's run by an old chum of mine - Peter Jackson - who happens to be a mad Sunderland fan and bit of a character....but is an honorary Claret. (He's had the pleasure of accompanying me to quite a few Clarets matches in the past inc the 1994 play-off victory against Stockport).

Good shout. Looks like we could be at risk of not having any London games in the championship next season at this rateGoddy wrote: ↑Fri Feb 23, 2024 9:38 amCould I recommend Southwark Brewing Co (SBC)...the first one of the Bermondsey Mile microbreweries and not far from London Bridge station. Re: Pubs for Crystal Palace.
I should have mentioned the beer is less than a fiver a pint at Southwark BC, I think.....decent for London these days.....
Re: Pubs for Crystal Palace.
Yes, let’s hope Millwall stop up. I like it as an away day and will certainly take a look at this place. Cheers for the heads up.Goddy wrote: ↑Fri Feb 23, 2024 9:38 amCould I recommend Southwark Brewing Co (SBC)...the first one of the Bermondsey Mile microbreweries and not far from London Bridge station. Victory club looks like home and season ticket holders - didn’t test the validity of the sign at the entrance.
