NFL 2017 Season
I know there was an NFL thread last season so thought I'd get this one going.
As I mentioned last year, I'm getting into NFL but I'm still learning about the sport. Anyway, I've chosen a team - Detroit Lions! I was never going to support a fashionable team, I am a Burnley fan after all.
Anyone else following it? Who are you supporting?

For my sins I'm a Dolphins fan... I'm going to all 4 games in London again this year, they are a a cracking day out.
Re: NFL 2017 Season
My Dad has been a patriots fan since I was a kid in the 90's (thought I would get that in early to avoid being called a glory hunter) so I follow them but honestly it wasn't until last Superbowl that I really paid any interest to it. We watched it at my house and funnily enough my Dad went home with one quarter left to go as he was upset about how it was going, I decided to watch the final quarter and I got to see "the greatest superbowl come back in history" and I loved it so I think ill try and follow it this season!

I'm still a casual watcher and every year I say I'm going to take more of an interest in it but never do.

Been a dolphins fan since I was a kid. I had a good feeling about this season until Tannehill got injured an Cutler came in to replace him. I'll be at the Wembley game again this year.
I'll be rooting for Kansas tonight obviously

Re: NFL 2017 Season
Am also a Dolphins fan and amazingly enough we made the play offs last season for the first time in for ever, only to comfortably lose to the Steelers in the wild card game.
We seem to have developed a much-needed running game with the emergence of UK born Jay Ajayi and his phenomenal stats last season (Only the fourth running back in NFL history to complete 3 x 200 yard rushing games in a single season).
I am unsure as to whether or not Jay Cutler is a good replacement quarterback for Ryan Tannehill (Who in my opinion has been disappointing as the main franchise star over the past couple of years), Cutler has worked well with Gase at Chicago previously so it may be a canny move bringing him in instead of Kapearnick.
The key to our season will be keeping the Offensive Line and Defensive Line fit, The likes of Pouncey, Tunsil, Suh, Phillips and Taylor are all vital. If we can protect Cutler, we may have a chance of at the very least getting to the post season.

Casual Cardinals fan. I also used to play for the Burnley Tornados but admit to not having a clue what most of the rules were, other than to stop folk getting to my QB.

The Redskins since '84, when it first came on C4.
Never done anything since Dan Snyder bought them, so not expecting much this year.

Broncos, with a soft spot for the Bears.
I don't have Sky anymore though so will be reliant on the BBC coverage - just debating whether to get a NFL game pass to watch on-line.
Anyone got one of these ? Is the coverage of the games similar to that what's on SKY, or can you choose?

Game pass was v good last time I used it (2/3 years ago). You can watch live, or pick whichever game you want to watch at any time, or watch highlights, or bits of a few games at once etcCubanclaret wrote:Broncos, with a soft spot for the Bears.

Dallas Cowboys for me. Always look for their result after the weekend and try and watch when they are on (not staunch fan tho)
Started following them around 87/88 as young lad due to my Grandma and grandad buying me some cowboys slippers from a holiday to the USA.

Re: NFL 2017 Season
I've been trying to get into this sport also in the last couple of years..not in a serious way...it's an exciting sport I think..[despite the time outs and stuff..?] - apparently the rules/laws are not that tricky so I'm gonna give it a go again.
I don't have a team to follow...though I like Chicago so I might pick up on the Chicago Bears...I also liked Miami..I like the idea of 'following' a team though, if I can find one with a good connection.
I have picked up on it because of the TV coverage here, a highlights programme,...BBC I guess - Mark Chapman anchors it and he has a couple of ex-pro American footballers on with him - they are knowledgeable and funny and generally good value.

Saw some highlights of the Bengals losing a Superbowl donkeys years back (even before C4 picked it up in the mid '80s) and so have always had a soft spot for them after that, even though bizarrely I can't remember who they lost to!. Took a dislike to the Bears as when NFL was first shown weekly over here back then they were THE team and won everything.

Used to be a serious Cleveland Browns fan. It's about a 6 hour drive from here, so I would make a weekend out of it, and see a game almost every year at the Mistake By the Lake, also known as Cleveland Municipal Stadium. Real hard-core stuff (well, so was supporting Burnley FC back in those days.) But when Art Modell moved the team to Baltimore, I lost interest. I even named my fantasy team "Modell Must Die". These days I more a general follower of the NFL, although it's always fun to watch the Buffalo Bills shoot themselves in the foot every year. We get all 3 Buffalo TV channels here.

Packers fan here. Have been since the early days of C4 coverage when they were rubbish. The only true small town team in the NFL, owned by it's fans and because of it's unique share structure of just 200 maximum share ownership it cannot ever be taken over or moved like the other franchises can.
Looking forward to yet another 'almost' season with a heroic failure in the conference title game.

Re: NFL 2017 Season
Go Pack Go! That makes two of us. I started in Majkowski's "Cardiac Pack" days - ie. before Brett Favre. It's a bit depressing reaching the play-offs every year and then crashing and burning, but it's better than being a Lion - there's never a position so good or a lead so long that they can't find a way to blow it.bfcmik wrote:Packers fan here. Have been a seahawker since the day's of curt warner, kreig and largent. Having 'reached' for Kareem Hunt as my first round pick in our sleeper league, I'm guessing the season can only go downhill after Friday night.
Always thought that green bay were the closest thing to Burnley. Oakland is Newcastle, Tampa bay probably = Nottm forest. How can any claret reconcile with being a cowboy fan? That's our antithesis in almost every respect.

Re: NFL 2017 Season
Ex-Oilers fan until they fell apart in the 90's.
Switched to Packers because of the resonance of their backstory and enjoyed being a fan during the Favre era.
Really enjoy the game due to its blend of precision technical skills and outright athleticism.
Wembley last year for Redskins Bengals, Saints Dolphins this year.
The coverage is excellent on Sky and the 'Inside the Huddle' podcast is good too with Jeff Reinbold (if you can stomach that quantity of Neil Reynolds).

If the slippers had a lightening bolt on or an Indian I'd have been a Charger or a Redskin it's that simple. They were fairly poor in the late 80s and as a general sport loving kid at 7 the back ground of Dallas was far from my mind or interest.timshorts wrote:Have been a seahawker since the day's of curt warner, kreig and largent. I'm a Bucs fan too. Went to my first game in 2003, the year they won the super bowl. Re: NFL 2017 Season
Foshiznik, the reason you're not an NHL fan is because you're not Canadian (or lived through a Canadian winter). In many small towns, strung out through the vast Canadian landscape, minor hockey programs are the only way to get through the dreary months. I remember my days in the old Brooklin Arena watching my brother play for the "Brooklin All-Stars" as he progressed through the age groups, and then listened to his stories when they played "on the road" at other small towns, wishing that I was as good as he was. I only played "house league", but he eventually got a try-out at a Tier 2 club, but, after a story appeared in the local paper announcing that he was playing on the top line, he was cut. It all seems very cruel looking back on it now, but that's what makes Canadian hockey players work so hard (and every Canadian boy grows up dreaming about winning "The Cup".)

Game pass is excellent value for money. I usually hook it up to a tv screen and have one game on one screen and red one on the other. Sunday evenings are bliss.
I'm a 49ers fan, I think this will be my tenth season. When I started watching we were shocking, then we got really good, and now we're terrible again

Good start for the Lions beating Cardinals 35-23. What was most impressive was the 20 points Lions scored in the 4th quarter!
Anyway, check out this touchdown catch from Golladay - a rookie no less! Scored 2 touchdowns in his NFL debut.

Great grinding win for The Pack over the Seahawks. 2 excellent defensive performances in the first half which only saw a field goal from Seattle with a few seconds remaining of the half. 2 great plays by Rodgers [the TD run by Montgomery was called at the line] and more rugged defending from both teams.
I fully expect to see both the Seahawks and The Packers make it to the play-offs.
