Really sad news and a total shock. RIP Cyril Regis an excellent striker playing in an attractive WBA side under Ron Atkinson.

Along with Team Mates Brendan Batson and Laurie Cunningham(also taken too soon), Regis helped blaze a trail for other Black Footballers in this country. He was a part of a Revolution in this Sport.

Shocked to read this news, 59 years old is way too young. I remember him as an all action bustling centre forward with a habit of scoring spectacular goals. A trail blazer for black footballers in an era when they were subject to abuse, along with his 2 WBA colleagues. A sad day for football. RIP Cyril.

What sad news. Above all, he was a very good player but just been reading again about the abuse he, Batson and Cunningham had to deal with.

One of my first memories of football was seeing Atkinson's WBA on TV. They had three black players when very few teams had one. How they never challenged for the title tells more how dominant Liverpool were. Regis, Batson and Cunningham.... Robson and Moses in the middle supplying ammo. About a billion pounds worth of talent in todays market.

RIP Ciril Regis, always seemed a Gent in interviews, and to become an England international at tht time was a hell of a feet. Happy memories. God Bless

They reckoned this was the game that went on to land Ron Atkinson the Man United job.

Awful news.

Remember seeing him at the turf for Coventry in the early 80’s. Think he scored too, but my memory plays tricks these days so I could be wrong.

RIP to a legend of the English game.

A brilliant footballer - absolute powerhouse of a centre forward. The team he played in at West Brom were very enjoyable to watch and that game when they ripped United apart is one of my earliest vivid memories of football.

But even more important than how great a footballer he was for Albion and Coventry is the legacy he left behind for black footballers. The term role model can be over used but if anyone in football has ever fit that description it's Regis. The way he conducted himself on and off the field in the face of what he was up against is actually quite hard to get your head around.

The good die young eh

Always enjoyed his powerhouse displays in that WBA side under Atkinson with Batson and Cunningham and not forgetting Remi Moses all trailblazers for black footballers at the time. Ironic that Atkinson then shot himself in the foot with some pathetic racist remarks about Marcel Desailly - off air or not.

RIP Cyrille Regis.

I'm sure he was - but can't remember how. Robert Regis is now 50 so only 9 years younger than Cyril.

John Regis the sprinter - was Cyril's cousin

59 years old ? absolutely no age, RIP Cyrille Regis. A real memory of my childhood, watching him for West Brom on MoTD.

Just imagine terraces full of people shouting the most vile abuse at people like Regis, it's just beyond belief.

Ironic that there's a thread on this messageboard of fans still behaving like that in 2018. Oh yeah, that'd be the lovely hannover fans shouting monkey chants at African footballers.

His nephew was Jason Roberts.

Some good stuff on the BBC website from Dion Dublin and Brian Deane.
Deane starts crying through his interview.

What Black players go through today does not even bare comparrison to what those young lads went through in the 70's / early 80's. You obviously didn't live through that time to make such a comment (not belittling you, just fact). NF Mass demonstrations every week, Coppers who were often encouraged to turn a blind eye because their bosses wanted "them" keeping in their place. Racism wasn't sought out then it kicked you in the head with a Nazi salute as you fell.

I remember some knuckle draggers on the Longside in the '70's who used to chant' we're Nazis from the Turf '. Pretty depressing stuff looking back.

Your post is what I was trying to get at. Deane is from the next generation but still rightly feels the same prejudice and hurt as Regis' time. I remember Burnley crowds giving abuse to black opposition players but cheering our black players.

It was not that many years ago that we sat next to racists in the lower Jimmy Mac.
Every game he would go on about burning tyres and the stewards would do nothing. Few fans reported him - including myself but nothing was ever done.
Not sure what happened to the idiot but at the start of one season he was just not there and we never saw him again. Unfortunately the same season we had 2 new incumbents new sat next to us - members of the English Defence League....absolute dick-heads. We moved seats to the other side of the stand eventually after enduring a season with them. One of them I know had a life ban from the club but still got on every week and spouted hus racist bile.

All clubs have clamped down on racism recently - unfortunately that does not mean there are any less racist Burnley fans.
