The Oscar's who gives a ?
like arsenal, massively overhyped nothing event, cannot credit how much time is given over to this stuff.
Does anyone really care ? its should just be an internal thing for their industry, bit of a works do kind of thing at best.
As if it wasn't boring enough, now its gone all political with hundreds of has been's making pointless speeches about nothing in particular.

It's an advertising campaign for a whole bunch of excellent films that you would never have heard of. Ignore the hype but check out the nominations.

Re: The Oscar's who gives a ?
I don't watch it as it's usually on a Sunday night, but I do have a look at the winners for the main ones.
Interestingly I don't think last years main film winner, Moonlight, was actually worthy of an Oscar, I think it won more for what it was about.
What you'll tend to notice also is the winning films are fairly recent ones from the last few months.
Amusingly the biggest gross earners rarely pick up the main awards either, they'll get the ones for music or effects etc.
It keeps the Hollywood luvvies happy though, we don't pay for it either so it doesn't really cause me an issue.
The Shape Of Water is one I want to watch though, it looks interesting.

Americans like hype more than the event. They like showmanship more than the technical detail( look at American football). They also like a fair amount of 'cheese'.

Given Arsenals current form, I reckon Garry Oldman would get a game!

A lot of hype. It's just an industry awards ceremony, the sort of occasion you'd also get with car sales industry or best sausage maker etc.
A self congratulatory orgy and a good night out for all the luvies but most of us in UK will just read the winners this morning and give a meh.
It probably generates extra bums on seats for the winning films so you can see why it's worth winning for them.

People don't usually go and watch sausages being made, but they tend to go and watch movies so there is generally more interest in The Academy Awards and Music Industry Awards than Lavatory Cleaner Awards.
Mind you I'd be interested in Cannabis seller of the year awards if they were televised - although the names would have to be changed to protect the guilty.

I've seen Shape of Water, Churchill and 3 Billboards and they were possibly the 3 best films I've seen this past year.
As for the Oscars and in particular the BBC News coverage of the 'after party' - Meh!

A large number of people in that room either knew or suspected it was going on and did the square root of nothing.
A lot were also quick enough to jump on Trumps back whilst probably knowing about what happens in their own industry.

Re: The Oscar's who gives a ?
I disagreed hugely with the 2015 Oscars, as I thought Birdman was self-indulgent toss, but films about the industry always do well.
They got it bang on with Spotlight in 2016, and I haven't seen Moonlight.
I was surprised the scandal of the Shape Of Water ripoff wasn't recognised though, it's really disappointing del Toro's been allowed to get away with that.
It was good to see Get Out at least win Original Screenplay.

ok...every now and then they produce a film suitable for someone with an IQ in double figures or above...fair enough..but not sure how it excuses this orgy of sick-making snotty w*nk.
i could probably manage about 30 seconds of it before i reach for the bucket.

Have seen both 3 Billboards and The Shape of Water and enjoyed them both. Can see why S.O.W. won as best film but would have chosen 3Bs myself.

Re: The Oscar's who gives a ?
Gary Oldman has been an excellent actor for over two decades. He thoroughly deserved to win an Oscar.
The Shape of Water, 13 Billboards and the Darkest Hour have all received critical acclaim.
The ceremony is one thing; the films another.

The only people who care about this bore-fest are the media - such as those hapless idiots presenting breakfast TV (it's easy news, doesn't require hard work or journalistic skills) and the Daily Mail Online, who wet themselves over Kendall Jenner's little black dress. And how hilarious it is to see them all falling over themselves to suddenly make headline-grabbing 'statements' while virtue signalling and scrambling over each other to be the most right on, to make up for the years of bigotry and inequality and trying to wipe over their collective guilty conscience.

Phantom Thread, Three Billboards and Dunkirk were all excellent.
Can't be bothered with The Shape of Water, it looks toss.
My choice from the ones I listed would be Three Billboards for best film as it's really enjoyable but Phantom Thread, which isn't for everyone, is a masterpiece.
It's utterly brilliant, I loved it but, like There Will Be Blood it isn't the sort of film you would watch more than once.

couldn't agree more - load of overhyped self congratulatory mutual back slapping mush - why people whose job is to "stand over there and say these lines written by some else " should be held in so much esteem and given a platform on such a range of issues has always struck me as ridiculous.
Gary Oldman is Gary Oldman - quit good mimic - very self absorbed , convincing , watchable, but just doing his job with a good script and team around him - big deal.
Although i would have been very happy to be a film star i must add
Obviously, the awards for director , writer, screen play are a little different

I've never watched The Oscars but I can't say it bothers me to the degree it does some on here. I think there are some incredibly talented actors, directors, writers etc who deserve to be recognised for their contributions to cinema. Whether it needs to be as big as it is, I don't know. But it wouldn't be as big as it is if there wasn't demand for it.

What really hacks me off is the BBC coverage of it. It isn't news. You aren't meant to show adverts so stop showing adverts for Hollywood films.
